In the case of ethnic minorities, the name constitutes an indicator for the bearer’s identification with his/her ethnic group or a visible sign of assimilation with the majority, thus being a basic social determination. In the case of mixed families, a preference is assumed for the use of language-neutral surnames to ensure stable coexistence in the bilingual environment, i.e. easy accommodation in any cultural environment.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128883036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the past few years, for the first time ever, the development of shared language tools for all CPLP countries has been in progress. This includes the first standardized common toponymic resource, Vocabulário Toponímico (VT). But what about other languages sharing their space with Portuguese? Official toponymy in the CPLP space is pervasively recorded only in Portuguese, and in Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Timor-Leste, for instance, the most widely spoken languages are all but absent from gazetteers and place-name signs, perhaps by virtue of those languages largely sharing their lexical base with Portuguese. In this paper we address the conundrum of developing the first common normative toponymic resource for many Portuguese-speaking countries. We share arguments as to why it can be used as an adequate model for the toponymic codification of other languages spoken in the CPLP, as a common toponymic data platform and, from there, as a tool that can be used to strengthen linguistic diversity.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126892502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The names on the funeral monuments in the cemeteries found in this settlement are specific to Romanian rural space. As far as their origin is concerned, one can note that 25.9% are biblical names, originating in Christianity and with religious connotations, 20.3% have Slavic roots and were borrowed via Bulgarian, whereas 7.4% are of Slavic origin and entered the Romanian language via Greek. Epitaphs consist of messages or appeals to wisdom, adages which were “sung” to express the regret of dying, appeals to remember the deceased, words which conveyed resignation before one’s destiny or the grief of the beloved, various philosophical phrases, and sometimes small prayers or personalized verses, etc. The oldest epitaph in the cemeteries in Săgeata dates back to 1892.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122472332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intercultural competence helps the individual to know oneself, first of all, by referring to the values of the community to which he or she belongs and then by referring to the others, by showing interest in and understanding for cultural differences. The diversity of the world we live in, the specifically human need for interaction and the existence of intercultural barriers lead to the idea that the development of intercultural competence is a necessity. The article presents the way in which we can contribute to the intercultural formation of students, by relying on an immediate reality, that of names as forms of expressing students’ linguistic and cultural identity. The study analyses the origin, typology and significance of the names of students from different cultural backgrounds, the story behind the choice of specific names, the association with famous bearers of certain names, and the cultural load of the names. This research aims to illustrate and discuss the relevance of idiomatic expressions for English language learners and to investigate a selection of idioms and chrematonyms that include ethnonyms. While native speakers tend to use idiomatic expressions spontaneously without thinking of their figurative meaning, for non-native learners, idioms are somehow difficult to acquire. Accurate explanation of their meanings, their cultural and historical correlations as well as a constant exposure to idiomatic expressions and constant usage increase the language learners’ communicative competence.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"258 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133217016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like any other such show, the reactions to it function like mirrors of contemporary themes and obsessions. As with most aspects of culture today, ideologues of all types – Marxists, conservatives, traditionalists, Critical Race Theory activists, intersectionalists, feminists, and others – always try to use such widely popular shows to illustrate their ideas and push their agendas. Some aspects of Songs of Ice and Fire have triggered debates on the issue of its characters as being not diverse enough, and thus showing how George R. R. Martin wrote a rather non-progressive book. This paper focuses on the names the author chose for his characters, and argues that the choice of names in the show is due to a wish of the author to evoke important world cultures, to have a sonority that matches the characters’ personalities, and to be both archaic and memorable. I have called such a view a non-ideological and symbolic one, and I think that viewers identify with the characters in the film due to their likes and dislikes, and not according to any kind of ideological claims. Nevertheless, these names can also be considered to be a good illustration of diversity – of ethnic, cultural, and racial background. For such a demonstration the study concentrates on the names of a few of the main characters, trying to come up with possible etymologies (as we know that Martin looked into such names of Medieval England) which are correct from a historical linguistic point of view, but which also can be interpreted as symbolic and have a rich connotation within the literary text.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129104972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel Fraţii Jderi most often observes the norms of onomastic conventions. It reflects an archaic world, an interweaving of social classes, nations and customs which highlight the multicultural character of the society and age described. The paper approaches the names of the characters in Fraţii Jderi from a threefold perspective: 1) etymological, in view of reconstructing the semantic traces in the anthroponyms investigated; 2) symbolic, making use of the information provided by lexicographic sources; 3) contextually connotative, decoding the possible “meaning” that the text assigns to the names (discursive meaning). In this analysis, we use the methodological precepts of anthroponymy, linguistics, theory of literary text and literary theory.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130488638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research illustrates the dynamic of anthroponyms, the frequency of foreign names and bilingual nominal structures, as well as the sociocultural factors underlying the choice of names. The corpus of the article consists of first names of newborns, extracted from civil and parish registers of Borşa and verified, in part, through a questionnaire filled in by the parents. The time interval proposed for the analysis spans 18 years (2000– 2018), including the period in which migratory flows multiply and many migrants return. Being a link between tradition and modernity, first names reflect individual experiences, as well as historical and multicultural influences. There are religious and profane first names illustrating different etymological influences, inherited from Latin, imported from Slavic or Romance languages, and created in Romanian from autochthonous lexical forms. Although the influence of the school, the media and the West is strong, especially after 1989, the trend in giving first names is constant, because Feleacu is a conservative village as compared to other areas in Transylvania.","PeriodicalId":441535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Onomastics ”Name and Naming”.","volume":"101 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124303694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
