Onomastic reflections of Italian emigration to Argentina: interlinguistic contacts and identity reestablishment

Abstract

This paper aims to retrace the most significant phases in the formation of modern Argentine onomastics, as a result of the construction of national identity, a process which assimilates and recomposes the variety of the original ethnic components. A diachronic reading of the data, starting from the baptismal registers of a rural community north of Córdoba, will allow for an evaluation of the onomastic choices, indicating the contours of the progressive reworking of the identity profile of Italian migrants, modified by means of interlinguistic and intercultural contacts.
