This activity can take an increasing amount of time out of teaching given that students require a reasonable opportunity to show what they are capable of. Approaches to assessment of ability during a presentation vary from hand written notes on a paper based guide through tick sheets to electronically based versions and spreadsheets. Processes may vary between institutions thus the issue of whether it should be purely academics making the assessment, purely students assessing their peers or a mixture of both is probably decided within the associated assessment regulations. There is also of course the need to consider weightings, marks and categories that could vary with the subject matter all of which can be very confusing and more subjective to the marker than allowing for objectivity in the marking process. The purpose of this study is to trial the production and use of a `common' rubric to assess individual student's presentations during a one year taught masters (MSc) in Engineering Management at the University of York. One of the key research outputs will be to indicate whether such an approach, and this specific rubric in particular, is effective in reducing assessment workload for staff and thus improving the student experience in terms of timeliness of feedback. This paper will describe the production and trialing of the rubric before discussing the findings and their implications.","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115305278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A distinct form of behavior is the jump-back. Students do it when they watched a scene of a recorded lecture and then watch it again after a short amount of time. So, it can be assumed that this scene is of higher interest because it is either very interesting or hard to understand for the viewer. The knowledge of these found hotspots could be used in order to improve teaching materials such as slides and teaching style. In this paper, we describe how we plan to gather the data, how to analyze it and how the insights can be utilized. It is not only focused on the technological perspective of video-based e-learning but also on the pedagogical view.","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115150916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They allow measurement and control of various parameters, simulated testing of models of real processes and provide convenient user interface by giving an opportunity to build an Internet-based virtual laboratories. This paper presents the results of the development of a computer-based system for data acquisition and LabVIEW virtual instruments for measuring humidity and temperature, enabling the creation of Internet-based virtual laboratories. This virtual instrumentation makes possible both remote measurement of humidity and temperature and training outside educational laboratories. The proposed approach allows remote conducting of real experiments and makes it possible to use virtual instruments in the field of training engineering students where it is essential to have practice hours.","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129591471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 3D model of mechanism with parallel kinematics is created in order to identify and optimize its geometrical and kimenatic parameters,the shape and size of the work zone. The dynamic characteristics of the model are defined in Simulink. The information received is the basis for developing of control system for the real model of the mechanism. A PLC based control system has been developed. It includes CX1010 controller from the series of Beckhoff, servo drives, type AX5000 and servomotors. The controlling is implemented on the basis of the built in libraries “TwinCAT Kinematic Transformation” and “TwinCAT CNC”. Thus the created model gives the opportunity for carrying out tests on the kinematics and the dynamics of mechanisms with parallel kinematics and experiments with new controlling algorithms. There are training opportunities for professionals in the field of mechanisms with parallel kinematic.","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129913493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we see an approach to semi-automatic grading of school works. It is based on peer-assessment of answers to open ended questions (“open answers”), supported by the teacher grading activity performed on a portion of the answers. The methodology we present is based on a representation of student model and answers through Bayesian networks. It supports grading in a six-values scale (the widely used “A” to “F” scale). The experiments we present test the possibility to model the fact that knowledge required to perform some work is preparatory to that required for a subsequent one. The experiments have been conducted using the web-based system OpenAnswer and were meant to collect datasets, to be exploited in order to evaluate the various algorithms, settings and termination conditions better to be applied in order to have a reliable set of grading out of the learners' peer-assessment process and the teacher's grading work (with the latter limited to a significantly limited percentage of the answers to be graded).","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127990814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The role of Multimedia Learning Systems in the Nigerian higher educational landscape","authors":"Arreytambe Tabot, Mohamed Hamada","doi":"10.1109/ITHET.2014.7155701","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITHET.2014.7155701","url":null,"abstract":"One of the most widely used mediums of knowledge delivery within academic circles has been the traditional (lecture-driven) teaching style. This method is as old as the time span between Confucius and the present day and even though being time-tested and true, was mostly predicated on the assumption that learning occurs in a school classroom, mediated by a trained teacher. As a result, the focus was more on the teacher than the student. This approach led to poor material retention and depth of learning as students studied for the sake of merely taking exams and getting good grades without a proper understanding of the underlying principles or their applications within real world scenarios. Multimedia Learning Systems (MLSs) have been known from the literature to enhance the overall teaching and learning experience as it gives the learner an opportunity to be engaged in the active construction of their own meaningful learning rather than passively participating in it. The learner thus becomes an actor, taking center stage in the learning process while the teacher is seen more as a mentor or guide by the side. This helps enhance the depth of learning, increase motivation and material retention, while challenging the students to become life-long learners. In this paper, we examine the growth of this new form of learning and its widespread adoption across the Higher Education Sector in Nigeria. A related aim of this paper is to inform the design of new learning environments and technologies that will take advantage of the growing number of smartphones and tablets to cater for informal and workplace learning.","PeriodicalId":432693,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130920556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
