Prendendo in considerazione il progetto politico e le strategie di rappresentazione dell’autorita di Arechi, suo fondatore, questo contributo intende riconsiderare sia la dimensione familiare di Santa Sofia sia il ruolo politico e religioso che la storiografia ha attribuito ad essa. La fortuna e \u0000il ruolo del monastero nella societa beneventana sono poi analizzati nel quadro del successivo principato dei Siconidi, quindi in quello delle trasformazioni politiche, sociali e devozionali che investirono Benevento nella prima meta del IX secolo. / ENGLISH: Italian scholarship has already underscored the similarities between the royal foundation of St. Salvatore of Brescia and St. Sofia of Benevento, founded by Arechis, duke of Benevento, before \u0000774. However, St. Sofia is still considered not only as a family foundation but also as the “Lombards’ national sanctuary” in Southern Italy. Taking into account Arechis’ political project and strategies of representation of his public authority, this study aims to reconsider both the family dimension and the political and religious role of St. Sofia in Lombard Southern Italy. During the first half of the ninth century, the role of the monastery changed as a consequence of the political, social and devotional transformations that were taking place in Benevento. Key elements of this comparison are the links of nuns and abbesses with the most powerful royal and aristocratic families in the area, and the way in which these contributed to the power and wealth of the relative houses. L’iscrizione, infine, e posta in relazione con la prassi longobarda delle iscrizioni dedicatorie di committenza regia. / ENGLISH: The study of the inscriptions of San Salvatore di Brescia, in particular the inscription which mentions the Lombard king Desiderius, has reopened the question about the interpretation of the text. The new reading proposed in 2014, which has revised previous interpretations, dates the text to the late Lombard age. This paper upholds this new interpretation that attributes the commissioning to king Desiderius and queen Ansa. In questo processo, alcune limitazioni (come un minor interesse dei vertici del potere rispetto ai monasteri femminili) hanno comunque influenzato l’affermazione delle comunita di monache, portando anche a una maggiore selezione dei cenobi femminili. / ENGLISH: Based on documents from monastic archives, the article aims to investigate some aspects of female monasticism in Ravenna. More specifically, the paper considers the links between female monasteries and the elites of the city, the way nunneries interacted with society, whether the female monasteries developed areas of power and if it is possible to identify specific aspects in this process. Land properties and the relationships that the nuns were able to build with the most important sectors of society played an essential role in creating their own sphere of action. La scarsita di documentazione rilevata soprattutto per l’epoca longobarda, rende assai difficile studiare la fase delle origini di tali monasteri, il vissuto \u0000religioso delle donne, il loro reclutamento sociale e i legami con le aristocrazie cittadine. In generale emerge un panorama monastico femminile composto da pochissime fondazioni, numericamente esigue, che si esauriscono entro la fine del primo millennio. Si segnala in tale contesto \u0000il monastero di San Michele in Campagna, le cui origini sono state attribuite dalla tradizione storiografica locale all’alto medioevo, benche i primi documenti che attestano la presenza delle monache risalgano alla meta del secolo XI. La felice posizione del monastero nella Campanea, poco distante dalla citta, vicino al fiume Adige e sulla via Postumia, ha determinato da un lato la nascita di un vivace borgo e l’inserimento della comunita monastica nella societa rurale circostante, dall’altro lo sviluppo di una rete di relazioni con famiglie urbane in forte ascesa sociale. / ENGLISH: This paper aims to investigate the presence of female monasteries, and to study religious experiences in the Veronese hinterland from the late Antiquity to the first half of the twelfth century, with a special focus on early medieval foundations. The scarcity of documents, especially for the Lombard period, makes it particularly challenging to study the origins of these monasteries, women’s religious experiences, their social recruitment and their ties with the urban aristocracies. In general, the picture we get of female monasticism is one of a very small group of foundations which gradually disappear by the end of the first millennium. Of special note is the monastery of San \u0000Michele in Campagna, which according to local historiographical tradition, was founded in the early Middle Ages, even though the earliest documents mentioning the presence of nuns date to the mid-eleventh century. Malgrado che la maggior parte delle carte trascritte o regestate da Bartolommeo Capasso alla fine dell’Ottocento (oggi per lo piu perdute) per ricostruire una storia documentaria della Napoli ducale provenissero proprio da monasteri femminili di fondazione altomedievale, delineare un quadro attendibile di questi complessi monastici e impresa ardua, molto piu che in altre geografie peninsulari, anche per la mancanza di una letteratura critica moderna sul tema. Nell’articolo si propone, pertanto, un percorso attraverso le fonti altomedievali, provando a cercare in esse le tracce di quei monasteri e della loro storia. Si procede poi a porre a confronto quanto dedotto dai documenti con il dettato dei testi cronachistici e agiografici. Soprattutto in questi ultimi i monasteri femminili si \u0000stagliano come punti focali del tessuto urbano, in grado di convogliare su di se anche una serie di funzioni simboliche e rappresentative che i duchi vollero assegnare loro attraverso l’istituzione di impianti monumentali, vere e proprie cittadelle monastiche, a capo dei quali posero \u0000badesse appartenenti alla loro famiglia. / ENGLISH: An investigation about the relations of early medieval Neapolitan female monasteries with power and prominent families, must come to terms with the scarcity of documentary evidence and the lack of data for formulating plausible hypotheses. Most of the documents transcribed or \u0000recorded by Bartolommeo Capasso at the end of the nineteenth century (now mostly lost) to reconstruct a documentary history of the Duchy of Naples came precisely from female monasteries of the early medieval period. Yet, drawing a reliable picture of these monastic foundations is a difficult task, much more arduous than for other centres of the Italian peninsula, also because of a lack of modern critical literature on the subject. This article draws on these early medieval sources in order to find traces of these monasteries and their history. The conclusions \u0000that can be drawn from this analysis will be compared with chronicles and hagiographical texts. The first is a contextualisation of the overall purpose of the monographic section, as well as a general summary of the questions, issues and themes which we were proposing to debate. The second part is an Appendix, which sets out \u0000the guidelines of the database MedItaNunC, which supported some of the research, and now provides not only a large percentage of the source material, but also a methodology about the connections which can be made through the information brought together. The essay looks at the historiography of the subject, including the recent wealth of research published from the perspective of gender studies in this area, and the way in which the Italian material fits into it. It also explains the chosen chronology, and the geographical spread used in the volume, and the important input of archaeology, which has helped propose new questions. Lastly, it sets out the three core themes which run through the other papers in the volume: the links between female monasteries and the city elites, the history of the monasteries concerned in the light of both their foundation and hagiographical myths, their material culture, and their ideological place in the cityscape, and finally, the attempt to identify the difference, if any, between female and male monastic houses. It is hoped that the collection will provide a first panorama of female \u0000monasticism across the multiplicity of Italian political and cultural landscape. / ITALIANO: Questo saggio introduttivo si articola in due parti. On the one hand, by comparing the convent with the other Venetian male and female monasteries, the study clarifies that the community exercised a more or less incisive role in representing first the doge’s family, then the entire city, during a specific timeframe.
