Rites with sacrifices represent a vivid manifestation of the form of religious cult and involve an offering of sacrificial gifts (animals, things) to the deities and require the use of a wide range of objects of the material world like ritual dishes and utensils, working tools and devices, ritual clothing, textiles. The entire set of cult objects constitutes the material embodiment of ritual activity which clearly characterizes the worldview, evolution, and the current state of national culture. The results of the study show that the things used in the rituals are used for their utilitarian purpose while the ritual nature of their use endows them with symbolic functions, thereby preserving their sacred status. Comparison with historical data shows that the number, composition and functions of objects used for cult purposes have remained the same, but their types, shapes, material and manufacturing method have changed. The work was prepared on the basis of published and archival sources, the authors' own field ethnographic materials.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46537630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novelty of the paper lies in the fact that for the first time ever it presents more detailed theoretical considerations of Egor Zagrebin's play “ Lebed’ Belaya [The White Swan]”. Its relevance is based on the use of the comparative historical method which enables us to identify the origins of the Udmurt dramaturgy. We can trace the impact of A. N. Ostrovsky and A. P. Chekhov’s theater on the play “Lebed’ Belaya [The White Swan]\" by E. Zagrebin. On the one hand, Egor Zagrebin's play is focused on the ideological and worldview conflict worked out by Ostrovsky, and on the other hand, it involves the elements of Chekhov's drama (an orientation towards symbolism and reticence is clearly detected in it). The study presents a comparison of the Udmurt play with Ostrovsky's drama “ Groza [Thunderstorm]” and Chekhov's comedy “Tchaika [The Seagull]”. The system of direct and hidden references to the previous texts has been developed in the process of research, which shows how the culture-bound literature overcomes and creatively transforms the initial trends of the Russian literature. If the Russian drama of the 19-20 centuries deals with insoluble conflicts (for example, “eternal conflicts” of Ostrovsky and metaphysical conflicts of Chekhov), then the idea of inherent harmony of the world is embodied in the play by E. Zagrebin. Despite the extreme tension of the collision, the dramatic conflict can be resolved; and the victory is won by the normative principle which is deeply rooted in the culture-specific soil. It is crucial that the Udmurt dramaturgy of the second half of the 20 century is under a double influence. On the one hand, it goes back to the tradition of the Russian classical literature (A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, A. Ostrovsky, A. Chekhov, and others); on the other hand, it responds to the current state of the literary process, or rather being influenced by the Soviet dramaturgy (A. Vampilov, A. Volodin, M. Roshchin, and others).","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43246270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Zagrebin, I. Toropov. Both of them belong to the generation of authors whose childhood and youth were spent during the Great Patriotic War. It is natural that the theme of wartime childhood is one of the most significant in the work of this generation of authors. Literary research, conducted on the material of the works of these writers devoted to this topic, made it possible to identify their main artistic features. It is autobiography, deep lyricism, emotionality, strengthening of the personal and subjective principles in the work, symbolization and metaphorization. In the course of a comparative literary analysis, it was established that the key and most significant in the works of this series is the motif of memory of the events of the past - memories of childhood during the war. The genres of short prose (story, prose miniature) allow authors to pay closer attention to the disclosure and solution of moral and philosophical problems, to address the personality of a growing person and his/her inner, spiritual world, to the psychology of a child and teenager. In addition, in the course of the study of the prose works by E. Zagrebin and I. Toropov, devoted to the war childhood theme, their lyrical character was identified and analyzed, as well as the image of the hero-narrator having the properties of a lyrical hero, romantic poetics and stylistics in the transfer of the inner world of a person. As a result of the study, it was concluded: the generation of writers who grew up during the war years not only continued, but also further developed the layer of literature on military subjects, the initiators of which were front-line writers.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43331275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper focuses on the use of val and vylem in four modal constructions: two deontic, a desiderative and a permissive one. It is established that in such constructions val and vylem can have non-modal and modal use as well. In their non-modal sense val and vylem primarily modify the clause temporally and form the past tense equivalent of the given modal construction. The difference between the non-modal use of val and vylem lies in the difference between the first and second past tense in general. In their modal use val and vylem decrease the degree of modal force (also called as modal attenuation) and should be analyzed as particles. In such cases modal constructions can be interpreted as counterfactual conditionals. Differences can be characterized between the modal use of val and vylem . The particle vylem is associated with greater mental distance between the speaker and factuality and expresses that the likelihood of realization is small or nonexistent. therefore, it can be considered epistemic. The particle val does not distance the events from factuality to such a high extent as vylem . Also, native speakers associated a higher probability of fulfilment with the utterances formed with val . In my opinion, the difference between the modal use of the particles originates from their verbal use and from the differences between the first and second past tense.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45383949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meanwhile, the work of M. Istomin is very representative both in terms of the formation of General regional characteristic of all the literature of the North, and the ways of familiarizing Komi intelligentsia to literary work. The analysis of works of M. Istomin made in this work, allows to judge about actual for the writer-“foreigner” of the XIX century connection to all-regional and all-Russian literary process, and also about a problem of creation of a native literary portrait for different people of the North. The description of the territory, its geographical and climatic features, the creation of descriptions of places was chosen by the writer as a priority, the most important task of creativity. This allows him to embody fragments of the Northern world through the focus of view of autochthon, to identify and record the most important, especially important for the northerner, locations and objects of environment. The writer paid special attention to the rivers as the most important geographical and natural attractions of the region. In essence, the North in the essays of M. Istomin takes the form of world saturated with many waters. The writer is far from symbolizing natural objects, does not endow their images with figurative meanings, at the same time, many descriptions of different rivers in his essays indicate the movement of regional and Komi literature by the way of creation its own concept of the North as a natural environment-centered world.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43668268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many peoples have tales, myths, beliefs and ceremonies that testify of the close relationship of man and the animal world. Traditional medicine, in which animals and birds are endowed with special functions, is no exception. The purpose of the scientific article is to identify the mythological ideas of Karelians about animals and birds in Karelian folk medicine. The studied material was also reflected in the Karelian national classification of diseases, in which, among others, groups of diseases from birds, animals and insects are absolutely clearly distinguished. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the scientific works of domestic and Finnish ethnographers and linguists. The sources for the linguistic analysis are dialect dictionaries of some Baltic-Finnish languages and etymological dictionaries of the Finnish language. All collected lexical and ethnographic material is analyzed in conjunction with closely related Karelian languages, as well as with ethnolinguistic data from the Russian language. As a result of the study, it can be clearly traced that the Karelians identified groups of animals and birds in the fauna and avifauna that could “send” various diseases to humans. However, they could become a means of curing these ailments. In the nomination of diseases, the similarity of the symptoms of the disease to the appearance of animals and birds is significant, which indicates a close relationship of man with the animal world.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45900289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main sources of the research are archival audiovisual records created by the staff of the Estonian National Museum in the period from the 1960s to the early 1990 s, as well as field diaries of participants in the Finno-Ugric expeditions. This was the time when official atheism prevailed in the Soviet Union, the main blow of which was directed primarily at the churches. At the same time, this was a period when open persecution of traditional rituals was not observed, and the study of the worldview aspects of the traditional culture of different ethnic groups was strongly encouraged by ethnology. On the basis ofaudiovisual materials, the article analyzes which fragments of the religious practices of the Finno-Ugric peoples are reflected in the museum archives, and which methods were used by researchers to record different rituals. Much attention is paid to building the relationship between the ethnologist and the bearer of the tradition in the field, as well as the special role of the local mediator in the study of religious rituals through a film or video camera. The considered examples of collecting audiovisual material confirm that in the Soviet period, in contrast to today's digital technologies and the usual practice of photographing and filming various (including sacred) events, researchers with a camera were not always welcomed at prayers. In the audiovisual study of religious rites, the process of adaptation to the environment of the culture under study and the effect of building a first impression acquired particular importance for ethnologists, largely related to the authority of the local mediator who brought them to prayers.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69904432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ethnic diversity of the United States leads to a constant intersection of various cultures, giving rise to the uniqueness of contemporary American literary life. National, cultural, personal identity associated with the revision of the traditions that were assimilated in their diaspora acts as the main problem of multiculturalism - the ideology of plurality and diversity. Self-identification strategies may include the definition of one's religious, ethnic, gender determination. Very often, the community's collective trauma and collective memory of the historical past can act as a strategy. The main strategies of ethnic and cultural self-identification of Finnish American literature are represented by the collective memory, collective trauma, “Finnishness”, and the national Finnish epic “Kalevala”, which is used as a source of archetypal images and poetic imagination. Basing on a number of works by Finnish American writers of the second half of the 20 and 21 centuries in different genres (science fiction, historical novel, short stories), the article examines the creative application of the Finnish epic “Kalevala”, integrated into the experience of American existence as one of the main strategies for self-identification of its own culture, which is built on the dialogical interaction of the Anglo-Saxon and Finnish cultures. The article actualizes the problems of the interrelations of the two cultures, the transformation of archetypal images, the reflection of collective memory in the works of contemporary Finnish American writers.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46874688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
