Christmas, which coincides with the winter solstice, has been so important, that the Estonian have been able to preserve it throughout the Soviet era, despite the hostility of the authorities, which tried to uproot this tradition and to replace it with the laic acknowledgement of the New Year. Today, the celebration of Christmas is a mixture of old traditions, of Soviet times adaptations and of international influences. This article aims at presenting the modern way of celebrating Christmas and insists on the centrality of family and kin, with eating of traditional dishes, a fair amount of material symbols, the exchange of presents, the performance of ritual songs and the visiting of the kin’s graves. The attendance at church remains from the past. The author discovered Estonia and started living in this country as an adult and has been observing the Estonian’s customs for circa 30 years. This article relies mostly on these observations and in addition, on literature written about old customs.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42693479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This complex approach allows defining and describing in detail the relationship between a person (an Observer) and nature (Observed) in terms of the perceptual and evaluative situation. Today historiography has a lot of research about violence against the Finnish minority since the second half of the 1930s. But there is no paper which describes the earlier years of their life: from 1920s to the first half of 1930s. Up to this point, historiography did not describe the actions of the Bolsheviks in relation to the Ingrian Finns, except for repression. Many studies focus on individuals and their families who have been resettled in other parts of the Union. This work is devoted to the Finnish national district with the center in the village of Kuivozi, and later in the village of Toksovo, which were one of the historical centers of residence of the Ingrian Finns. The aim of the study is to explore how the national policy of the Soviet Union was implemented on the example of the Finnish minority with the help of materials from the Toksovsky District Council. This article mainly uses documents left by the Bolshevik Party and local authorities. The analysis of new sources sheds light on previously unknown information about the relationship of the Bolshevik authorities with the local population. The paper shows how the Soviet Union tried to organize the life of ethnic Finns in a region so close to Leningrad - a large, strategic center of the country. The situation was also complicated by the proximity of the border and the danger of collaboration on the part of the Finns, because on the other side of the Sestra River lived the same people to whom the Ingrian Finns were close in language and culture.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42829705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data of researchers of the 18th - early 20th centuries (P. S. Pallas, N. P. Rychkov, V. M. Cheremshansky, I. N. Smirnov, P. Eruslanov, U. Holmberg, etc.) and materials of Finno-Ugric museum collections are summarized. It is noted that consideration of \"Udmurt\", \"Mari\", \"Bashkir\" and other traditions can be considered with a high degree of conditionality, based on the long stage of the Finno-Ugric-Turkic community and the allocation of ethnoses with the discrepancy of their ethno-cultural boundaries. It is shown that in the works of the past centuries, the Bashkirs were generalized with the Tatars, meaning the Tatars as «eastern» peoples. Official statistics show that in the studied areas (Birsky, Belebeyevsky, Menzelinsky uezds of the Ufa province),) we are talking primarily about the Bashkirs. According to a corpus of sources, the evolution of costumes of the Udmurts and Mari people of Bashkortostan went the same way. At the end of the 18th century, the perception of individual elements (girls' headdresses) observed. In the first half of the 19th century there was \"Bashkirization\" of men's costume (borrowing headdresses, upper swing clothing camisole and beshmet). Udmurt and Mari women's costumes found themselves in a single stream of ethno-cultural changes, along with Bashkir and Tatar, during the democratization of society, the formation of a single trade, economic and ethno-cultural space with changing fashion. In the middle of the 19th century, traditional white-canvas clothing, products made of krashenina and pestryad, as well as manufactured clothing, coexisted among different peoples. New fabrics first used as an element of finishing products, then independently. Bright colors and jewelry made of coins were preferred. The cut and methods of decorating clothes have become multivariate. The image of the \"Bashkir\" Udmurts and Mari people formed.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47606927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translation teachers know that the disciplines included in the standard translation theory course are very difficult for students to understand, so some of them try to make the learning process more creative. Earlier, our Literary and Translation School-Studio prepared and published a bilingual (Estonian-Russian) children's book “Loe veel! - Read more!” and a two-volume book \"Estonian Writer of the Sixties\", which included translations of poetic, prose and dramaturgical works of representatives of the \"cassette generation\" of Estonian literature. It has long been necessary to publish a book of fairy tales of the peoples of Estonia in the Estonian (state) and Russian (still the most common language of interethnic communication in the post-Soviet space) languages. And this was made possible thanks to the addition of innovative and interdisciplinary ELU courses to the schedule of Tallinn University. The aim of the project was to create a book that would introduce children and their parents to the fairy tales of many peoples living in Estonia. This was also the reason for the objectives of the project: to find out how many and which national cultural societies are registered in Estonia; select one fairy tale of each of the peoples; prepress and release the collection. The relevance of the project lies in the fact that a wider audience - students of various specialties - was involved in work that they had not previously been offered to do, respectively, the existing hopes for obtaining a new quality of study were justified.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45273723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main source of units for analysis was \"Materials for the Dictionary of Komi-Perm Plant Names\". The Komi-Perm phytonymic material is analyzed in structural and semantic-motivational aspects. The paper considers the structural types of two- and three-component units, describes the main and determinative components, gives examples of phytonyms formed according to the corresponding models. Semantic and motivational analysis has shown that, in general, zoonyms in the structure of complex phytonyms give the names of plants the meaning \"not real\", \"inedible\", \"not domesticated, wild\". Some units have a more specific motivation that depends on the animal name: zoonyms yus’ 'swan’, turi ‘crane’, lyagusha ‘frog’ reflect the place of growth, the zoonym balyamosh 'bumblebee’ - honey-like properties of plants, components pytsh ‘flea’, ludyk ' bug’ - the ability of plants with strong smell to drive away insects. Units formed by metaphorical transfer most often represent the structural parts of the plant: features of the stem (porskok ‘burdock’ - literal ‘pig's leg’), a form of the shoot (kӧktoin 'field horsetail' - literal ‘cuckoo's pestle’), the leaf (shyrpyzh 'plantain' - literal ‘mouse boat’), the inflorescence (kӧchbӧzh 'snake root' - literal ‘hare's tail’), the flower (kӧkkoti 'Venus's slipper' - literal ‘cuckoo's shoe’). A significant percentage of Komi-Perm complex phytonyms have originally Russian zoonymic components: baran, ezh, kuricha, lyagusha etc. Some of them are linguistic calques of the names of Russian units: shyrankytsh 'mouse peas’ (tufted vetch), kanlapka, kankӧk 'cat’s paw’ (cat's foot), kӧxinva 'cuckoo tears’ (haircap moss), etc.","PeriodicalId":41242,"journal":{"name":"Ezhegodnik Finno-Ugorskikh Issledovanii-Yearbook of Finno-Ugric Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48727903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of spices also makes cuisines special and distinctive. The article deals with the traditions of the Besermans to use local wild, cultivated and exotic herbs. Local and imported spices Besermans call турөн \"herbs\", курөт турөн \"bitter herbs\". The choice of local plants as spices is based on their gustatory and spicy-aromatic qualities, as well as their phytoncidal activity and medicinal properties. Among them, local wild spices ( Carum carvi, Mentha arvensis, Filipendula ulmaria ) and long cultivated vegetables with a spicy taste ( Raphanus sativus, Allium cepa, Armoracia rusticana ) prevail. Exotic spices are mainly limited to black pepper and bay leaf. Spices are used in folk cuisine, folk medicine and veterinary medicine. Local and exotic spices are not put into ritual dishes, which indicates the preservation of archaic features in the diet and the special status of ritual cuisine. Traditional knowledge about herbs and spices is relevant to folk cooking demonstrations, gastronomic events, museum work, tourism and agricultural development.
