For this purpose, based on Hyland’s (2005) interactional metadiscourse taxonomy, 52 aerospace conclusions writing pieces from two high-profile journals were selected for analysis. Results indicate that the discrepancy in total number and frequency lies in the use of hedges, boosters, and attitude markers. Linguistic features, sociocultural factors, and rhetoric functions are responsible for these discrepancies. This work may shed lights on academic writing and pedagogy.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116148762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the lack of a systematic research on the aesthetics of linguistic forms, this paper aims at investigating the factors contributing to novel metaphors’ aesthetic appeal. This study takes as a point of departure the great Roman rhetorician Marcus Tullius Cicero’s four hypotheses about the contributing factors to metaphor’s aesthetic appeal. These hypotheses prove to be reasonable based on our wide-ranging study on the relevant researches of inter-disciplinary interests in such fields as linguistics, psychology, neurology and aesthetics. Vivid images, pleasure in comprehension and meaning inexhaustibility are found to be the three potential contributing factors. Presumably, this inter-disciplinary endeavor will shed light on our investigation into the aesthetics of novel metaphors.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130019259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, avoidance phenomenon appears and runs through the entire process of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). However, although the avoidance is essentially a kind of communication strategies, excessively inclined to take it will also lead to stagnation of learner’s foreign language proficiency, which is also an important reason for the formation of fossilization. Based on the relevant theoretical results of scholars at home and abroad, this paper is designed to analyze avoidance behaviors of non-English-major freshmen in oral English class, and discuss the coping strategies for this phenomenon. In addition, some suggestions will be also put forward for shaping a dynamic classroom atmosphere that can effectively improve students’ oral English level.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122327026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Raymond is deeply invested in preserving the history of Asian Americans, and strives to connect with his community and immigrant past in order to shape his own identity. However, Aurora Crane and Brenda pursue their identities through integration into American society, believing that ethnicity is not necessary for self-understanding. The clash of these contrasting perspectives, and the contrast between the cultural interpretations of San Francisco and Hawaii, lead to a realization that Asian American identity is pluralist and constantly evolving. In the novel, there are the juxtaposition of a heavy historical tone and rigid family stereotypes in the first half, and a lighter, more open plot in the second half. This duality highlights the complex nature of identity formation, with the two techniques complementing and supporting each other. Through the interweaving of history, reality, self, and other, the novel portrays the many attempts at self-realization and multiple identities of Asian Americans, which do not necessarily conflict, but rather offer infinite possibilities for the shape of ethnic identity. American Knees is not just a lighthearted portrayal, but a nuanced attempt to decode the complexities of Asian American identities.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127610863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It helps us establish and maintain social relationships. This paper analyzes the inaugural speech of Joe Biden based on interpersonal function and conducts both a quantitative approach and a qualitative approach. This research has found: In personal pronoun system, Biden used the first person pronoun most frequently in his inaugural speech. In modality system, medium-value modal verbs were used most, followed by low-value modal verbs and high-value modal verbs. In mood system, declarative sentences were used most often, which made his speech more objective and reasonable. In tense system, present tense appears most often in the speech, followed by future tense and past tense. In evaluation system, different resources have helped to achieve the interpersonal function.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114906670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Madame Bovary is one of the masterpieces of the famous French writer Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880), in this novel, the heroine Emma keeps trying to pursue romantic love, but finally chooses to end her life by taking poison due to debt. Based on Grimes’ “semiotic rectangle” theory, this article analyzes character relationships on a structural level in order to fully reveal the surface and deep connotations of the text. The results show that Flaubert criticizes vulgar romanticism and bourgeois characters by establishing several pairs of opposing relationships, and that the fundamental source of the tragedy that led to Emma’s life was the social climate of the time, in which people betrayed each other.","PeriodicalId":408181,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133978990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
