Sampled data\u0000 (conversation and narrative retelling) from a longitudinal learner corpus with 16 adult L2 signers was analyzed and compared with\u0000 data from nine L1 signers. The use of three broad types of signs was analyzed: lexical signs, partly-lexical signs (i.e. depicting\u0000 signs) and non-lexical signs. The results revealed some differences between L1 and L2 signers, especially with regard\u0000 to depicting signs. The number of depicting signs used by L2 learners increased over time, approaching the target language use.\u0000 Qualitatively, we observed differences between L1 and L2 signers in their use of depicting signs, related to handshape choice\u0000 and sign constructions. We discuss these findings in light of previous research linked to L2 vocabulary as well as the role of\u0000 gestural knowledge in sign L2 acquisition.

Sign languages have been described as highly iconic and relatively similar to each other compared\u0000 to spoken languages. Attaining fluency in the signed modality might well require considerably less effort, and balanced\u0000 bilingualism may be more prevalent in the signed modality. Language dominance constructs, as currently understood, might differ in\u0000 the spoken and signed modality. Forty bilinguals with two sign languages responded to a language dominance questionnaire developed\u0000 for spoken languages and performed a phonological fluency (sign generation) task. Language dominance levels were found to vary in\u0000 the signed modality. The correlation between reported dominance levels and the number of signs generated in each sign language was\u0000 significant, suggesting that the construct of language dominance tested is robust and independent of modality.

Under the Feature Pool\u0000 Hypothesis (Mufwene, 2001) and the Mutual Accommodation\u0000 Theory (Thomason & Kaufman, 1988), this study looks at the features of\u0000 gender and number agreement, and word order of the cardinal numeral and the noun. Data comes from interviews between Ss and FWs in\u0000 GPA, and photo elicitation interviews used with Ss to identify how cardinals are used in Najdi Arabic. Through the lens of the\u0000 Feature Pool Model, I offer a brief account of how cardinal numeral forms are selected in GPA. In particular, I examine how well\u0000 cognitive factors account for the development and restructuring processes of the cardinal numeral system in GPA by taking into\u0000 account factors such as frequency, perceptual salience (detectability), and pattern regularization, as well as the Foreigner-Talk\u0000 register and accommodation. The results reveal strong tendencies of accommodation and conventionalization in numeral form\u0000 selection.

Children witness how specific languages express transitivity by listening to linguistic\u0000 input, which varies according to contextual variables (such as the age of the speaker and the addressee). In this study, we\u0000 investigated word order, one feature that typically helps discriminate between transitive and intransitive constructions but is\u0000 more reliable in some languages than others. The frequency and consistency of word order as a cue towards clause transitivity was\u0000 analysed in the input to 19 monolingual Spanish-learning children from Argentina (20 months old on average,\u0000 SD = 0.3), diverse in terms of socioeconomic status (SES). In this study, we tested the usage-based account by examining the acquisition of Italian, a language with relatively free word order and rich inflectional morphology. We exposed two groups of Italian-speaking children (aged 3;01 and 4;05) and adult controls to a nonce verb and to a familiar verb in an imperative construction. We then prompted production of those verbs in a different morphological form (past tense) and a different syntactic construction (transitive). While both child groups showed adult-like productivity with morphology, there were significant group differences in syntactic productivity.

Acoustic analysis of periodicity and duration for target segments confirms expectations based on L1 transfer and on the Markedness Differential Hypothesis. We found that, due to the absence of phonemic /z/ in Spanish, L1 Spanish learners exhibit great difficulty in producing voiced realisations for /z/, and more so in the (more marked) word-final position than in the (less marked) word-medial position. In contrast, L1 French and L1 Italian learners did not exhibit difficulties in reproducing the voicing patterns of English /s/ ~ /z/ neither word-medially nor word-finally, due to the existence of these sounds in their L1 (and despite differences in relative markedness for these two positions, especially considering that word-final /z/ does not exist in Italian). Finally, we observed the impact of orthography on the production of L1 French and L1 Italian learners, affecting the periodicity of /s/ and /z/ depending on spelling transparency.
