The measurement techniques currently available, while having yielded important and relevant information on the complexity of global neural networks, still provide only snapshots of the full picture. At present, recording and analysis remain linked to the spatial or temporal resolution inherent to each technique. Thus, the ability to integrate electrophysiological and functional imaging techniques to gain access to the spatio-temporal dynamics of neural activity is an important frontier in modern imaging science","PeriodicalId":360097,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/NLM Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121648324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we extend the study of a model recently proposed for the cyanobacterial circadian clock. We theoretically show that balanced ratio among KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC proteins is required for the generation of oscillations by using our model recently proposed. Bifurcation analyses show that cooperativity for the mutual inhibitory process in the model does not always enhance the generation of oscillations though cooperativity for the inhibition of transcription and in the nuclear transport of clock proteins in Goodwin type models extensively studied is known to always enhance the generation of oscillations","PeriodicalId":360097,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/NLM Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122285979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MILES converts a MIL problem to a supervised learning problem by an instance-based feature mapping. 1-norm SVM is then adopted to select features and construct a classifier simultaneously. MILES identifies the sub-images that reflect underlying category concepts, and use them for classification. Experimental validation is provided based on images from different organs and parts of the body. The new approach demonstrates significantly improved performance in comparison with a method based on a Gaussian mixture model","PeriodicalId":360097,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/NLM Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123441249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, inaccurate genotyping can lead to false association between markers and phenotype. We introduce a new SNP genotyping scheme, SNiPer 500K, for Affymetrix 500K GeneChip. SNiPer 500K designs a parametric classifier for each SNP, by using expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the parameters. A quality index provided by SNiPer 500K shows that it can reliably genotype about 65% of all SNPs, with superior call rate, better Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and reproducibility. SNiPer 500K provides a good balance between coverage and accuracy for high-throughput SNP genotyping and would prove to be an invaluable tool for genome-wide association study","PeriodicalId":360097,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/NLM Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124043294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technology has shown to be highly reliable and dependable, although not free from problems regarding expression estimation, as it relies on the differential or contrasted hybridization of test probes. In many cases hybridization results do not show the expected behaviour, thus affecting to the reliability of expression estimation. In the present paper a modelling of the hybridization process is proposed which can be used to predict and correct expression levels on a specific test probe, improving the reliability of the results. Electrostatically actuated suspended indium phosphide (InP) waveguides are used as the sensing cantilevers. This sensor uses an integrated optical detection scheme which eliminates the need for free space optical components seen in traditional systems. Discussions on device design as well as data collection methods are presented. Mass sensitivity in the range of Deltam = 6.6times10-15 g is reported, comparable to similar cantilever sensor designs. While the full restoration of vision is unlikely in the near future, the discrimination of shape and location of objects could allow blind subjects to 'navigate' in a familiar environment and to read enlarged text, resulting in a substantial improvement in the quality of life of blind and visually impaired persons. Neurological events are characterized by changes in both neurochemical concentrations and the electrical activity of neurons. Electro physiological and neurochemical events are highly correlated as one causes the other and vice-versa. The ability to simultaneously record electrical and chemical activity is of considerable research and diagnostic importance. Here, we present a hardware implementation for wireless power and clock transfer to and serial transmission of digitized neurochemical and electro physiological data from sensors over one RF link. The idea can be extended to sensors of different modalities having widely different data rates. Neurochemical data are acquired in real-time from a custom multichannel very large scale integrated (VLSI) potentiostat chip at 5 Hz. Field potential data were sampled at 400 Hz. A custom VLSI chip powers up and supplies clocks to the potentiostat and telemeters the multiplexed data. All the chips were fabricated in AMI 3M-2P 0.5μ CMOS process. We demonstrate successful operation of the system with wireless powering and telemetry of the multiplexed data.","PeriodicalId":360097,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/NLM Life Science Systems and Applications Workshop","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127927939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
