Data were collected from women managers in 261 hotels in Madrid and the headquarters of the top 25 Spanish hotel chains. The conceptual model was tested by partial least squares (SmartPLS 3.0). The results indicate the three levels of influence on women being promoted to management positions, institutional-level factors being the main barriers in discrimination.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1923941","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43616387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study tests the influence of 10 leadership competencies toward job satisfaction and turnover intentions in New Zealand and Vietnamese hotels. The results show that all 10 competencies were significantly correlated to both outcomes in each country with these were dominant predictors: (1) ethical leadership and team leadership in New Zealand and, (2) ethical leadership, delegation, and team leadership in Vietnam. Moreover, the influence of these competencies on turnover intentions was mediated by job satisfaction, thus implying an underlying causal mechanism.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1923901","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46146633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the data were collected from 474 employees who work at hotels operating in Jordan. A series of confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation modeling (SEM) were carried out to test the measurement model and the developed hypotheses. The findings indicate that employee engagement is positively associated with Green HRM practices. Additionally, this study provides original findings on how the contextual-institutional interactions between transformational leadership behaviors and green HRM practices can foster employee engagement with environmental initiatives.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1923918","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42630225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were differences between levels related to acknowledgement and response to the glass ceiling, stereotyping, and work-life balance. Absence of formal higher education did not limit advancement to higher level positions. The majority of women used an inclusive, democratic leadership style unless it was deemed ineffective, and mentoring played a large role in the success of women in leadership. Implications for academics and practitioners in small island economies are discussed.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872235","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43090134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A limitation of most previous studies, however, was the inability to explore in depth, the existence, impact, and causes of these bullying behaviors. Thus, an exploratory qualitative research strategy was applied using 23 individual semi-structured interviews. The study collected data from a sample of foodservice employees working in a variety of hourly, supervisory, and management roles. Findings indicate that bullying is a serious, prevalent problem in the foodservice industry and attributes to the stressful nature of the foodservice environment and its symbolic cultural norm. The behaviors witnessed or experienced by the interviewees results in mental and physical discomfort, job loss, and hostility. The findings demonstrate that this may be mitigated by developing, implementing, and mandating relevant training programs, changing policies, and disrupting the cultural norm.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872271","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41726020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines work-related factors and college major (hospitality vs. non-hospitality) in explaining alcohol use at work among employed college students (N = 788). Results demonstrated formal alcohol policies moderated the effects of access to alcohol and after-work alcohol-use norms (social drinking), but not the effect of at-work norms (coworker behaviors). No effects were found for college major. Hospitality majors reported a slightly higher consumption level; however, less than 6% reported high-risk behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872270","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59882891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five focus groups were conducted within three hospitality sectors (hotels, restaurants, and theme parks) in order to gain a greater insight as to the use, causes, and consequences of vacations. The data analysis revealed five themes: vacation usage patterns and behaviors, factors promoting vacation, factors inhibiting vacations, company policy on vacation, and the impact of technology on vacation. A model is presented which expands the theory and practice on the benefits and challenges of taking vacations in the contemporary workplace.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872251","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47044492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ability of hotel middle-managers to contribute to the effectiveness and performance of their hotels is often dependent on their job satisfaction and affective commitment to the organization. By introducing the concept of psychological ownership, this particular study seeks to understand the determinants of hotel middle-managers' job satisfaction and affective commitment. Additionally, this study examines whether the tenure of hotel middle-managers is likely to attenuate the relationship between psychological ownership and pro-organizational attitudes. Empirical evidence is drawn from a sample of 110 middle-managers in a 4- and 5-star hotel chain in Malaysia. Findings from the study add a new dimension and insights into understanding how and when hotel middle-managers are satisfied with their jobs and committed to their organization.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872236","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48521468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study conducted in-depth interviews with fourteen women in hospitality leadership positions in the Southeastern U.S. and intended to reveal obstacles and best practices. The findings suggest that women's career advancement could be hindered by a lack of self-confidence or lack of careful career planning. With regard to work/life balance, there were mixed positive and negative impacts when the respondents were asked how work and life impact each other. In addition, some women leaders did experience stereotypes in the workplace. The professional images were sometimes misidentified at work and did not truly reflect their personal identities and competencies. Academic and practical implications are discussed in detail.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2021.1872258","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45706312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, this paper examines WE as the mediator between I-deals, PP and employees’ job performance (e.g., CP and PCSP). The conceptual model was tested via the data collected from hotel frontline employees in 4- and 5- star hotels in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. The results showed that I-deals and hotel frontline employees’ PP have positive effect on WE, as well as WE has positive influence on hotel frontline employees’ CP and PCSP. The results showed that PP improves job performance whereas I-deals are not. In addition, WE mediates the relationships between PP and CP. This article provides theoretical and managerial implications, as well as limitations and future research directions.","PeriodicalId":35371,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332845.2020.1821429","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43378716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
