{"title":"ERROR ANALYSIS MADE BY THE FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS IN THEIR ENGLISH COMPOSITIONS","authors":"Anna Stasya Prima Sari, Anggiat Sinaga","doi":"10.36655/jsp.v8i2.316","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36655/jsp.v8i2.316","url":null,"abstract":"This research was primarily conducted to find out the total amount of grammatical errors and to analyze kinds of morphological and syntactical errors made by the fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program of Catholic University of Saint Thomas in the Academic Year of 2018/2019 in their English compositions. There are 22 students as the research subject of the study. The writers collected the data by asking the students to write down an English composition entitled My Unforgettable Experience. The grammatical errors made by the students were analyzed based on linguistic category taxonomy (morphological and syntactical errors) proposed by Dulay et al (1982). Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are 400 grammatical errors altogether (277 morphological errors and 123 syntactical errors) made by the research subject in their English compositions. In morphological errors, the students dominantly made errors in past tense, namely 247 errors (89.2%). Next, the students made 14 errors in definite article (5.0%), 10 errors in third singular verb (3.6%), 2 errors in comparative adjective/adverb (0.7%), 2 errors in regular/irregular verbs (0.7%), 1 error in possessive case (0.4%), and 1 error in past participle (0.4%). In syntactical errors, the students dominantly made errors in transformation, namely 42 errors (34.15%). Next, the students made 30 errors in verb construction (24.39%), 25 errors in word order (20.33%), 24 errors in verb phrase (19.51%), and 2 errors in noun phrase (1.62%). This research is a classroom action research, which was conducted using two cycles using a total sample. Each class is taught with different teaching material, in the first cycle the teaching material presented is elasticity and in the second cycle the teaching material is static fluid. Each cycle is evaluated, reflected and improved in the hope of achieving cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning indicators for students. From the evaluation results obtained an average cognitive value for cycle I of 70.24 and cycle II of 78.10 with a gain = 0.26 low criteria, and the results of the t test, obtained t count 3.13> t table 1.684 means there is influence. The average affective cycle I was 80.20 while the second cycle was 84.22 with a gain = 0.20 in the low category, and the results of the t test were obtained by t arithmetic 6.203> t table 1.684, meaning that there was an improvement effect of the cycle I to cycle II. For the psychomotor assessment results, the average value of the first cycle was 71.90 while the second cycle was 77.78, and the gain = 0.21 was in the low category, and from the results of the t test, t count was 7.83> t table 1.684 there is an improvement in the results from cycle I to cycle II. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen. Populasi penelitian seluruh siswa kelas VIII MTs. Al-Muslihun Menseh tahun pelajaran 2018/2019. Sampel penelitian ditentukan dengan teknik simple random sampling sehingga terpilih kelas VIII-a dan kelas VIII-b. Kelas VIII-b ditentukan sebagai kelas kontrol yang diajarkan dengan metode ceramah dan kelas VIII-a ditentukan sebagai kelas eksperimen yang diajarkan dengan TPS (think pair share). Racanganan penelitian yang digunakan adalah “The Post-Test Only Control Design”. Instrumen pengumpulan data menggunakan tes kognitif untuk meningkatkan prestasi belajar. Hasil penelitian untuk kelas eksperimen adalah ( =73,50), dan untuk kelas kontrol adalah = 52,90). Hasil uji normalitas diperoleh x2hitung < x2tabel yaitu 6,77<11,070 untuk kelas eksperimen dan 3,30 < 11,070 untuk kelas kontrol. Hasil uji homogenitas diperoleh Fhitung < Ftabel, yaitu 0,68 < 1,96. Maka data yang diperoleh dikatakan terdistribusi normal dan homogen. Pengujian hipotesis dilakukan dengan menggunakan perumusan Uji-t. Hasilnya thitung > ttabel, yaitu 5,00 > 1,68, sehingga hipotesis alternatif (Ha) Terdapat Pengaruh Model Pembelajaran Kooperatif Tipe Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Terhadap Kemampuan Menelaah Unsur Kebahasaan Teks Biografi Siswa Kelas VIII MTs. The research findings showed that English has nine types of question words, they are: Who, This study is about the similarities and differences of question words in English and Bahasa Batak Whom, What, Where, When, Why, How, Which, and Whose. While in Bahasa Batak Toba, there are eleven types of question words, they are Aha, Ise, Boha, Dia, Andigan, Nandigan, Piga, Sadia, Boasa, Mahua, and Marhua. In terms of functions, Both English and BahasaBatak Toba’s question words are used to ask for person, place, time, thing, reason, manner, activity, and possession. Jenis penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Jumlah subjek penelitian sebanyak 66 orang, masing-masing 19 guru pembimbing olimpiade dan 47 siswa olimpiade dengan 9 bidang keilmuan. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode wawancara, observasi dan dokumentasi. Bahan ajar berbasis digital tersusun dari berbagai materi yang relevan dan disusun sesuai dengan kebutuhan pembelajaran. Spesifik pada komunikasi visual, bahan ajar berbasis digital mengoptimalkan kemampuan siswa menyerap informasi melalui penglihatan dengan cepat dan lengkap 70%-80%. Bahan ajar berbasis digital berbentuk visual memiliki pengaruh lebih besar terhadap peningkatan hasil belajar siswa di era kenormalan baru. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan bahan ajar sains berbasis ditinjau dari perspektif komunikasi visual, dan mengetahui peningkatan hasil belajar siswa setelah menggunakan bahan ajar sains berbasis digital. Penelitian menggunakan langkah, meliputi: (a) define, (b) design, (c) develop, dan (d) disseminate. Subjek uji coba kelompok kecil 6 siswa. Subjek uji coba lapangan 14 siswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar sains berbasis digital yang dihasilkan sangat layak ditinjau dari perspektif komunikasi visual, yaitu validasi ahli materi skor 3,70/4,00, hasil validasi ahli media memperoleh skor 3,74/4,00, respon siswa pada uji coba kelompok kecil skor 2,80/3,00 dan uji coba lapangan skor 2,89/3,00. Peningkatan hasil belajar siswa menggunakan produk skor tinggi. This research figure out that the dominant personality type of translators is ESTJ (Extrovert, sensing, thinking and judging). The dominant personality type (ESTJ) produces a negative impact on translation ideology. In line with that, the weak ENFP and ISFJ type on translation ideology are negative.
