Despite the high educational usability of Web-based discussion study, it is not easy to induce active participation, discussion and interaction because there is no way to force students' participation and control their discussion activities. For proper discussion study, the teacher and learners must participate in discussion actively and positively, and for this the teacher needs to establish a teaching strategy for stimulating learners' active participation in discussion. In addition, parents should check their children's participation in discussion study. This study designed and implemented a Web-based discussion study system that provides various forms of discussion spaces and promotes student's active participation and interaction through observing their discussion activities. In this system, teachers or parents can observe students' participation in discussion and provide feedback.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. As a consequence, students are required to learn spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel. The learning of spreadsheets is often accompanied by problems related to spreadsheet application and their mathematical content. The EXITS (Excel intelligent tutoring system) research project aims to develop a Microsoft Excel tutor that help students or learners to overcome their learning difficulties. In this paper, we analyse and classify spreadsheet errors made by students in order to determine the function that our system should perform and to generate an error library for student modelling purposes.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. Most of Web-based learning systems provide a discussion forum to create knowledge. However, discussion forum posts are separated from the context of the learning activities. Students must manually rebuild the context of their questions before posting. Students also commented that they had problems interpreting the answers to the questions posted. This paper proposes an online e-book annotation interface that enables students to post a question directly and receive timely adaptive mentoring in the place and context where question encountered in reading e-book, and to use anchors to access discussions in a forum. And, a mentor recommender, based on the preference and knowledge level of the students, is provided to recommend appropriate capable peers to answer the issued questions. The experiment results showed that the discussions were increased significantly, and about 80% of students indicated that they benefited greatly by adaptive peer help.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. We approach the issue from both cognitive-psychological and technological perspectives. First, we discuss how cognitive and socio-cognitive processes generally involved in learning and collaborative knowledge building relate to the specific characteristics of hyperlinked videos, informing their design. Then, with regard to technology, we introduce two concepts, which provide tools for crafting and interacting with non-linear knowledge structures based on dynamic video information. Case studies and first research findings are presented and prospects for future research are outlined.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. In order to adopt this 3-level model a new data management system is introduced allowing the implementation of an information support system, an intelligent tutoring system and a decision support system, this way, improving the learning efficiency and overcoming the lack of \"face-to-face\" contact in previous e-learning approaches.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. We present a new, constructivist technique for educators in developing countries, of lifelong benefit to their students. Course materials are often incoherent to students until a lecturer does an analysis and provides the pedagogical links or glue. So we taught a class how to provide pedagogical links themselves, a technique we call the Teaching of PedaGlue. We teach the processes that lecturers perform on material to make it suitable for students: how to access, process, create, share, and apply knowledge. Systematically and intentionally we teach students how to do this didactisizing (pedagogical process) themselves, and thereby rapidly develop new, modern, dynamic instructional reference material. They developed a large, comprehensive, annotated, organised corpus of recent, relevant references that is now published. Success factors included the prior teaching of research methods, and resources, key keywords, and a template for critical reviewing.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004.
