Several researchers have suggested that learning and using a second language requires common executive functions, and many have shown that bilinguals outperform monolinguals in tasks related to these processes. However, recent studies and meta-analyses have questioned whether bilingualism leads to changes in general executive functions. An article by John G. Grundy presents an analysis of 167 independent studies to support the claim of the benefits of bilingualism, excluding random results that would show an equal number of studies in favor of monolinguals than bilinguals. These results cannot be explained by publication bias, publication year, or sample size. Importantly, the analyzed data do not contradict the results regarding the overall size of the effect of bilingualism, and lead to the search for an answer to the question: When do bilinguals outperform monolinguals in performing tasks that involve executive functions?","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Ontological security is seen as a life being which permanently embodies independent “I” in real-life contacts with people around and the world. Empirical research engages 119 first-year students at medical college. To study actor’s life activity, the authors applied A.A. Volochkov and A.Yu. Popov’s method of “Diagnostics of student activity” DAS 2, which is based on the theoretical model of actor’s life and includes three components of activity: need in interactions, self-regulation, and satisfaction. N.V. Kopteva’s psychometric method of studying ontological security \"OS (PM)\" and the method of studying ontological security, built on the principle of the semantic differential \"OS (SD)\" that were designed on the basis of the ontological security concept, and R. Laing’s alternative clinical conception of ontological insecurity, were also used in the research. To process the data the authors applied methods of mathematical statistics: descriptive statistics, cluster analysis (k-means method), Mann-Whitney U-test, correlation analysis (r-Pearson correlation coefficient). It is stated that students with higher activity differ from students with lower activity and show high ontological security resting on the ontological ground inside and beyond their own “I”, which takes place at two levels of its reflection - less differentiated experiences: confidence in mental “I”, in the body, in the world, in people, in individual value and more differentiated experiences: autonomy and vital contacts with the world.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. The theoretical study revealed a lack of unanimity in terms of interpreting and conceptualizing the concept of personal maturity and defining its structural and content elements. The empirical study involved humanitarian students from the first to the third courses (females (103) and males (22) aged 17-20 years). As a result of the exploratory factor analysis procedures, an integrative variable of personal maturity has been calculated which is considered as a set of cognitive (self-understanding, positive thinking), emotional (self-sympathy) and behavioral characteristics (autonomy, sociability). The personality of a mature subject in the period of early adulthood can be described as distinguished by an optimistic view of the world and a deep understanding of his or her identity combined with positive emotions and self-attitude and the ability to maintain personal boundaries even creating close relationships with others. The considered algorithm for calculating the integral variable can be applied in studies aimed at studying latent psychological phenomena.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Urban identity is viewed as a type of individual’s social identity in relation to his/her affiliation to a certain urban community. The study of the causes and effects of the urban identity’s crisis is based on the notion of this identity as valuable and meaningful cohesion of individuals and urban community. The problem of urban identity is studied via the analysis of modern concepts of social change in urban space, related to mainstream of human resources, financial, material, information resources. The article indicates that the crisis of identity is represented in the potential loss of individual and personal links to the city, in the loss of affiliation to the place of living, in the vanishing demand for urban identity. The notions of retrospective and prospective urban identity are introduced to identify the ground to maintain urban identity. Retrospective urban identity is based on the existence of so-called “places of memory” in urban space that integrate physical space, fragments of collective memory and individual valuable attitude to this memory as the inclusion to the city history. Prospective urban identity rests on individual’s cohesion and affiliation to future states of urban community as a source of potential social options. Assessments of directions for social change are figured out in positive and negative prospective urban identity, which defines residents’ migration intentions and their active participation in the city life.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. It is there that communication is realized, interest groups are formed, values are broadcast and undergo changes. Thus, the question of ways to protect against heterogeneous content on the web with the support of the individual on his own meanings becomes relevant. A study of psychological defense mechanisms was conducted in 85 boys and girls aged 18-24 years (30.6 % women, Me=22.5; 69.4 % men, Me=21.5) - users of social networks with different levels of meaningfulness of life. The Plutchik-Kellerman-Conte test questionnaire was used to diagnose the mechanisms of psychological defense, the test of life orientations by D.A. Leontiev was used as well. According to the results of the application of the Pearson χCriterion, it was found that with an increase in the level of meaningfulness of life, the arsenal of psychological defense mechanisms of the individual increases and their severity noticeably increases. Respondents with a high level of meaningfulness are dominated by Rationalization, Hypercompensation, Projection; with an average level of meaningfulness - Displacement, Regression, Compensation; with a low level of meaningfulness - Regression, Denial, Rationalization. Using the Spearman correlation analysis, it was revealed that with an increase in the meaningfulness of life, the actualization of psychological defenses \"Substitution\" (transfer of reaction from one object to another) and \"Regression\" (return to earlier behaviors) decreases, the overall intensity of defenses decreases.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Categories: copying, serving, overcoming, production, progress, process, revolution, science, technogenic environment, technosphere, noosphere, alienation force, pollution factor, collective intelligence, technical reality, technotronic civilization, transformation - they consistently reveal the ontology of technology. The significance of the Kappa concept of technology, which defines technology as an extension of a human being, is shown. The influence of the historical context in the formation of categories describing the essence of technology is revealed. Much attention is paid to the inconsistency, multidimensionality of the phenomenon of technology. The article defines the specifics of using the categories of technogenic environment and technosphere. The significance of the natural scientific concept of the noosphere is shown. The analysis of the features of the fifth technological revolution is given, the prospects for the formation of a technotronic society are shown. It has been established that the most important ontological basis of the phenomenon of technology is the anthropological component, which does not remain constant. The question is raised about the possibility of self-sufficiency of technology in the ontological sense, the formation of its independence from a person and the likelihood of such a scenario. The technotronic civilization is just being formed and the prospects for its development are not unambiguous, technology can acquire new, completely unexpected qualities, which requires further research.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. The objectives of the study included the development of an additional professional advanced training program \"Organization of health care and public health\" with the inclusion of a training module using distance learning technologies (DLT) \"Development and implementation of a quality management system in a medical organization\", development of a distance course \"Organization of internal quality control and safety of medical activities\" with an adapted system for assessing the level of competence formation in the form of test control and experimental verification of the effectiveness of the formation of universal and professional competencies of doctors healthcare organizers in distance learning in comparison with the traditional form in training cycles. Reliable results have been obtained on the effective formation of competencies both in traditional learning and in learning using DLT. The assessment of the reliability of the differences in test results after training between the experimental group, trained using DLT, and the control group, using the traditional form of training, was carried out. There were no statistically significant differences in test results between the compared groups. Thus, the results of the study indicate that the use of DLT in teaching and the education quality control system adapted to them makes it possible to effectively form the universal and professional competencies of doctors in the courses of advanced training. At the same time, mandatory preliminary measures should be taken, including the development of a professional development program with the inclusion of a distance learning module and the development of a distance course with an adapted knowledge control system.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. Martindale's theory of creativity are considered as integrated ones. The mediators between them were personality traits in the theory of H. Eysenck. To measure social discipline, self-discipline, general discipline we used \"Discipline Questionnaire\" by V.P. Pryadein and L.Ya. Dorfman; creativity - \"Unusual Use\" test adapted by I.S. Averina and E.I. Shcheblanova; personality traits - H. Eysenck and S.B.H. Eysenck’s questionnaire. We studied cross-theoretical and empirical models of integration as applied to discipline and creativity through extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism. Empirical models served as mediator models (path analysis), which included the structural components of discipline (general and social discipline, self-discipline) as exogenous variables. Variables of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism were considered as mediators; creativity with components as an endogenous variable. The study involved 243 junior cadets of the Perm Institute of the National Guard of Russia, young men, aged from 17 to 22 (M = 18.60, SD = 0.94). The obtained results indicate that psychoticism integrates general and social discipline with creativity, and extraversion integrates general discipline with creativity. The dual mechanisms, namely disinhibition (impulsivity) and inhibition (restraint), are assumed to be the basis of the results obtained.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University. The purpose of creating a reflective diary is defined; the effectiveness of using the developed reflective diary is evaluated from the point of view of developing skills of independent work, reflexive skills of a primary school child, in accordance with the indicators of quantitative and qualitative changes in the level of development of the personality of a primary school child. A feedback system has been developed from primary school children in the form of a questionnaire. A number of pedagogical conditions for the effectiveness of the use of a reflective diary are listed: adherence to the frequency of keeping a diary, the use of diagnostic tools in the diary, the stages in filling out the diary, the completeness of the tasks of the diary and recording achievements in the corresponding section, conducting a secondary diagnosis of indicators of the personal characteristics of a younger student, recognizing improvements in the personality of the child by parents, teachers and the child himself. A scale for assessing the effectiveness of a reflective diary is provided. A conclusion is made about the degree of development of the system for assessing the effectiveness of the use of a reflective diary in the educational process of a primary school child.","PeriodicalId":280577,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Udmurt University.
