This change in organizations’ portfolios has been occurring for a number of reasons: strategic issues, customer demands, or even low environmental impact trends. This paper aims to add the customer´s perspective on such a scenario through a case study in the laboratories of one of the major Latin American public hospitals. The acquisition of clinical analysis equipment was investigated; the results show an evolutionary trajectory of PSS implementation during the last decades. As a customer, this laboratory went through three phases of evolution: first, as equipment buyer; second, when equipment was no longer laboratory property, changing to leasing contracts; and third, a new method of purchasing, called the PSS solution. In this third phase, the laboratory observed important advantages related to product use and internal demands. The changes in the purchase process brought important gains to the laboratory, such as a secure operating system, risks shared with the solution provider, and specialized technical support.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125153176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aims to identify the factors that explain why few Brazilian farmers recognized adoption of the TRACES certification as a valuable opportunity. A farm is required to adopt traceability and a set of associated technologies to obtain certification. A sample of 84 beef cattle farms provided data for the testing of the hypotheses by means of a bivariate logit model. The recognition of the opportunity is positively correlated with previous experience with other quality programs, access to up-to-date information, a more diversified life experience, and active participation in relationship networks.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124097875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The water is then supplied by gravitational force. Because the cost of electrical energy varies throughout the day, a pump running schedule is necessary. The problem consists of determining when the pumps must be on and when there must be water transfer among tanks to ensure that the demand of each water tank be supplied, thereby minimizing the costs of electrical energy. This problem was modeled as an integer linear optimization problem, and a heuristic solution to the problem is proposed. Computational experiments show the efficiency of the heuristic and highlight how the approach can be used to analyze the impact of changes in the infrastructure of the water supply system.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128314602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to identify how the project management office can contribute to product portfolio management. The research consists of a case study at a high-tech company where the product portfolio is continuously renewed and that features a well-established project management office. Among the main results, it was observed that the project management office's participation is greater during portfolio review decisions than during decisions related to the strategic planning of products. Furthermore, the project management office supports top management and the project teams in applying financial methods and in the mapping and evaluation phases during product portfolio management activities.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121470025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates an aggregate production planning problem in a plant that produces supplements for horses, cattle, pigs and poultry. To address this problem, we proposed an extension of the classical capacitated lot-sizing problem to incorporate decisions about lost sales and inherent uncertainties in production planning, such as demands, setup times and perishability. To generate solutions that are less sensitive to changes in scenarios, we also developed a risk-averse stochastic model with an absolute semi-deviation-based risk measure. An analysis of the expected value of perfect information and the value of the stochastic solution confirmed that the stochastic approach outperformed the deterministic approximations in handling uncertainty. Furthermore, the results indicated that it is possible to significantly reduce the variability of the second-stage costs without sacrificing the expected total cost.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115232297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because temperature largely influences microbial activities, the continuous monitoring of the time-temperature history over the distribution process usually allows for the adequate control of the product quality along both short- and medium-distance distribution routes. Time-Temperature Indicators (TTI) are composed of temperature measurements taken at various time intervals and are used to feed analytic models that monitor the impacts of temperature on product quality. Process Capability Indices (PCI), however, are calculated using TTI series to evaluate whether the thermal characteristics of the process are within the specified range. In this application, a refrigerated food delivery route is investigated using a simulated annealing algorithm that considers alternative delivery schemes. The objective of this investigation is to minimize the distance traveled while maintaining the vehicle temperature within the prescribed capability level.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125443234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interest in free software dates from the first developments in computing in the 1960s and 1970s until the present days. The problem of this research is determining how to adopt, select and deploy an ERP that is freely available. The contributions of this work begin with the proposition of a preliminary model of the ERP life cycle, considering no distinctions between a proprietary and a free ERP. This model was refined using the action research method in a field study focused on the adoption, selection and deployment of a free ERP in a Brazilian company. The main result of this paper is a final model with modifications to the adoption and selection process to use free and proprietary ERP’s; one deployment was found not to present process differences.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121712915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses cluster analysis, ANOVA and correspondence analysis to test for differences in business unit size, location, and supply chain structure between MC and non-MC producers across the globe. The analysis uses data from an international survey of manufacturers of metal products, machinery, and instruments from 21 countries. Results indicate no significant differences in size, but significant differences in location and supply chain indicators between MC and non-MC plants. We also find renewed evidence of the positioning of MC plants in Hayes & Wheelwright's (1979) product and process matrix.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123140049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, human judgment might introduce biases into the forecast. One way to avoid these biases is to use structured adjustment approaches. This article presents a procedure to help companies implement a demand forecasting system with a judgmental adjustment of statistical forecasts. The use of this procedure in a small company shows its implementation. The results demonstrated that judgmental adjustments improved quantitative forecast accuracy by an average of 5%. The results also showed that the product with the greatest variability in a time series had the best adjustment performance and that the best outcomes came from the larger adjustments.","PeriodicalId":263089,"journal":{"name":"Production Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128108593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
