The units of analysis are student–supervisor dyads. We use duocentred networks, a novel network structure appropriate for networks which are centred around a dyad. A cluster analysis reveals three typical clusters of research groups. Those which are large and belong to several institutions are labelled under a bridging social capital label. Those which are small, centred in a single institution but have high cohesion are labelled as bonding social capital. Those which are small and with low cohesion are called weak social capital groups. Academic performance of both PhD students and supervisors are highest in bridging groups and lowest in weak groups. Other variables are also found to differ according to the type of research group. At the end, some recommendations regarding academic and research policy are drawn.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131902480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic assumption here, which also finds support in the literature, is that a person's performance largely depends on the relationships they have with important others within the organization. An individual's performance is also the result of individual traits such as competence, intelligence, experience, attitudes and personality. In this paper we are interested in how these different social (network) and individual factors shape the performance of doctoral students in Slovenia. On the basis of several factors established in previous studies we formulate a typology of Slovenian doctoral students. The study was conducted on a sample of 117 doctoral students in Slovenia. The data were collected in 2003 as part of the International Network on Social Capital and Performance (INSOC) research project. The results show that a clustering into five groups is the optimal solution and confirms some findings of previous studies. Good integration into the research group, a good relationship with the supervisor, a strong motivation to do the PhD, and the importance of the work seem to be the factors most beneficial to academic performance. However, the results also reveal that social relationship and attitudinal indicators have a more complex and not always a linear relationship with performance.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126019527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The name generator approach, which first requires of a respondent to name actual persons and then usually asks several additional questions about these persons gives richer data on the respondent's social network, but is, on the other hand, relatively costly and burdensome. On the other hand the role relation approach is simpler to use and probably less burdensome for the respondent (he/she names persons in his/her networks only in terms of their roles, e.g., partner, friend), but provides less precise data on the respondent's network (e.g., network composition and size). Previous experiments which compared both approaches with regard to network composition (proportions of family, friends, neighbors and co-workers) provide incomplete evidence because the two approaches differed in several methodological aspects (e.g., question wording, limitation of the number of named alters, ranking of named alters). In this article, an experiment was designed in which all factors that were found to interact with network composition and the two approaches were controlled for. Based on previous studies, several hypotheses were formulated and tested. Data were collected on a quota sample of 683 respondents by students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana in October and November 2008. Results show that, in general, differences in frequency distributions were not large. Provision of instrumental support is similar for both approaches, but larger differences appear in emotional, informational and work support. Differences were greater for strong ties and for the category \"no one\". Differences were also slightly larger for first choices. Dispersion of roles was slightly greater with the name generator approach. Results are discussed in comparison with previous findings.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117283446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Capó et al. (2007) used quantitative data to predict PhD students' publishing performance from their background, attitudes, supervisors' performance and research group networks. Variables related to the research group network had a negligible explanatory power on student performance once the remaining variables had been accounted for. In this article, a qualitative follow-up of the same students is carried out using extreme case sampling and in-depth interviews. The qualitative research shows networking as important for students. Out of the 115 aspects that students mention in the interviews as relevant to publishing in the qualitative research, 92 have to do with their supervisors, their research group or their network as a whole. Similarly, out of the 50 hindrances mentioned, 20 have to do with the networks or relations. The most commonly mentioned network-related topics are research group members pushing PhD students to publish, meeting researchers outside the research group, existence of other PhD students in the group, help with the PhD from group members, supervisor's interest in the thesis, the possibility of discussing with experts on the PhD's topic and frequent contact with the supervisor and research group members. Some of these characteristics were not, however, measured in the conventional quantitative social network survey.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126139075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper starts with an overview of theoretical models and empirical studies that originate in educational research and psychological research. The paper continues with a description of theoretical models and empirical studies that originate from organizational research and focus on explaining job performance. The Job Demands-Resources model (Xanthopoulou et al., 2007; Bakker and Demerouti, 2007) is used to explain why some doctoral students perform better than others. Social support networks and social support from a doctoral student's research group (supervisor and co-workers) are operationalized as job resources. The proportion of explained variance of the doctoral students' academic performance is 0.14. Social support and personal networks have the largest effect, following by work motivation.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123725410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples of such populations can be found in fisheries, mineral investigations (unevenly distributed ore concentrations), animal and plant populations (rare and endangered species), pollution concentrations and hot spot investigations, and epidemiology of rare diseases. Ranked Set Sampling (RSS) is another useful technique for improving the estimates of mean and variance when the sampling units in a study can be more easily ranked than measured. Under equal and unequal allocation, RSS is found to be more precise than simple random sampling, as it contains information about each order statistics. This paper deal with the problem in which the value of the characteristic under study on the sampled places is low or negligible but the neighbourhoods of these places may have a few scattered pockets of the same. We proposed an adaptive cluster sampling theory based on ranked sets. Different estimators of the population mean are considered and the proposed design is demonstrated with the help of one simple example of small populations. The proposed procedure appears to perform better than the existing procedures of adaptive cluster sampling.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123364239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though a lot of well-known algorithms have been proposed, some problems are still challenges from a computational point of view and their fast solutions are thus of great practical interest. This paper focuses on some parallel algorithms for social network analysis. In particular, a review of some existing parallel algorithms is carried out and a new parallel algorithm is proposed for parameters estimation in Exponential Random Graph Models.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116408760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article describes occupation as an indicator for social status and labor status as an indicator of the respondent's position in the life-cycle. First, we identify variables necessary to measure occupation, employment and the labour force concept from ILO (International Labour Organisation, Geneva). Second, we introduce strategies for harmonizing the underlying social concepts of the measurements in surveys across countries. Third, we present our own instrument to measure occupation and labour status as social demographic background variables in cross-national comparative surveys. Finally, we summarize the findings from a pilot survey. The test revealed that the instrument enables the data needed for the social science analysis of socio-economic status and occupational prestige to be collected with ease.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131586423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of GARCH and IGARCH models VaR values are obtained applying Extreme Value Theory on the standardized residuals. The Kupiec's LR statistics was used to test the accuracy of risk measurement models. The main conclusions are: (1) when modelling value-at-risk it is very important to have a good model for volatility of stock returns; (2) both stationary and integrated GARCH models outperform RiskMetrics in estimating VaR; (3) although long memory volatility is present in the BELEX15 index, IGARCH models cannot outperform GARCH type models in VaR evaluations for this index.","PeriodicalId":242585,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Methodology and Statistics","volume":"277 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131718674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
