Specifically, Prince & McCarthy’s morphologically-driven Phonological Readjustment theory and Yu’s phonologically-driven Phonological Subcategorizationtheory are compared to determine which of the two is better fit to explain -um- Infixation in Javanese. I show here that Javanese infixation data is crucial in providing insight into this debate, because unlike other previously studied infixation cases, the Javanese -um- always triggers some phonological readjustment(s). This provides overwhelming evidence for the morphologically-driven Phonological Readjustment theory, as this theory is the one that can offer (i) a unified target for infixation in Javanese, and (ii) a phonologically-driven motivation for the derived words.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130620697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a qualitative research. The research data sources are authentic texts taken from social media captions containing situational contexts. The research data are elements of situational contexts found in the authentic utterances in social media captions. The research data are gathered using the observation method employing the note-taking technique. The gathered data are classified and typified to generate types of data in details. Then, the data are analyzed using the distributional analysis method and the pragmatic identity method. The distributional analysis method is used to analyze the linguistic dimensions of this research, while the pragmatic identity method, particularly extra-lingual identity, is applied to analyze the extra-linguistic dimensions of this research. The preliminary research results show that the situational contexts proposed by Geoffrey N. Leech need to be reinterpreted and redefined to adjust to the development of current situational contexts. Situational contexts are inseparable from the digital information technology because language is not immune from the impact of the technology development. Method of data collection were the method of reading, namely the intensive and comprehensive reading. We read the social actor’s representations that were represented in mass media online: Republika.co.id during 3 days of news, on 18, 19, and 20 of June 2018 where there was a lot of polemics over the Irawan’s inauguration. The Republika.co.id was more inclined than supported the inauguration, though according to Indonesian Government, it was legal because in that moment Irawan was as Main Secretary of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas), not as an active Chief of Police in Special Capital Region, Jakarta. The data were obtained by copying-paste technique. The analytical methods used were descriptions, interpretations, and explanations. The results of the analysis showed that all pro-government social actors, both in government and \"outside the government\", supported Irawan's inauguration as acting governor of West Java. On the other hand, social actors who did not support the inauguration are reported as social actors who obey the constitution, educate the people, encourage honesty, uphold democracy and so on. That was why, Irawan's inauguration as acting governor in West Java was reported negatively, such as unconstitutional inauguration, fooling people, violating democracy, public deception, and so on. The difference of the social actors’ representation above was undeniable due to differences in the ideology (nationalism versus Islamism) and political interest ahead of the presidential election last year, in 2019. Thus, it proves that the study of CDA perspective can show us the relationship between language use (discourse), ideology, ‘hidden’ power and also discourse and social practice.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131961520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A group that lives in an area usually names its territory using their language and cultural characteristics of the place. However, heterogeneity in Indonesia society makes the naming of regions experience changes and shifts over time. This can be seen from the naming of the administrative area in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province. As a border area between Indonesia and Malaysia, the naming of administrative areas becomes necessary and important to be preserved as an identity marker. In this regard, this study explores the naming of administrative areas in Sanggau Regency. This study aims to describe the pattern of naming administrative areas as language documentation, explore identity markers in naming administrative areas, and preserve language and cultural characteristics in naming administrative areas. The research method is based on toponymy research with descriptive qualitative analysis. Data collection techniques using questionnaires and interviews. The research data includes the naming of sub-village, village, and districts in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province. The research respondents were 50 people who were selected proportionally based on their language and ethnicity. The results of this study are the naming of administrative areas in Sanggau Regency has several semantic categories, such as fruit, rivers, trees or plants, places, people, ethnics, objects, and animals. In terms of language, the naming of the administrative area in Sanggau Regency comes from Malay, Dayak, Javanese, and Indonesian. This result was obtained from local knowledge, although not all administrative area names were explored. The number of administrative areas that have not been explored makes language documentation efforts need to be followed up by the local government. This ‘promotional’ element of travel articles, an inseparable part of the text type, is significant to inform translation practices. However, studies in this area are quite lacking in that the element is not well-understood, i.e. how ‘promotion’ can be identified in both the source and target texts and if there are potential changes between the texts. This paper compares the construction of promotion in bilingual tourism texts published in an in-flight magazine as a case study. This is done by examining the attitudinal meanings in the source text (ST), written in Indonesian, and the target text (TT) in English. It uses the interpersonal system of appraisal proposed by Martin and White from systemic functional linguistics to analyse the construal of affect, appreciation and judgement in the promoted items found in the texts. The genre stages and register were also identified to situate the context. By this formula and motivated by various intentions, Javanese people used to conform wittily the literal meaning of Javanese words with the creative meaning resulted from extension or modification of their consisting syllables. By using a number of data collected from website and added with ones I had found during my 40 year stay in Yogyakarta, I focuse my attention on the approaches of creation, semantic domains, and communicative functions by structural, contextual, and interpretative methods. Mostly “jarwa dhosoks” are created by treating the words to be defined as acronyms with final syllabic rhyming pattern, some of them are done with initial and combination of initial and final syllables. Jarwa dhasa created by various kinds of sound changes are much fewer in number. The practises of creating “jarwa dhosok” are used to fulfill various kinds of pragmatic function, mainly emotive, connative, poetic, jocular, and metalinguistic function, etc. Even though most of words to be defined in “jarwa dhosoks” are created to be semantically conformed with the intentions, many of them might be difficult to comprehend by outsiders or unfully pledged speakers without comprehensive understanding of the Javanese cultural practices in its broadest sense. John J. Gumperz’s (1982) and Dell Hymes’ (2005) sociolinguistic theories on identities and choices of languages in multilingual contexts and Herring, Stein, and Virtanen’s (2013) discourse theories on digitally-mediated intercultural communication is used as theoretical concepts and frameworks, building on FB as a site for intercultural contacts where language, culture, and political ideology are practised and selection of appropriate languages and forms is the main strategy for discursive safety. Data were collected by participant observations of FB interactions involving the Tadpoles (government supporters) and the Foxes (the oppositions) in Lombok, Indonesia. Twenty key players in each group were followed from January 2020 to August 2021. As the units of the analysis, words and sentences in the statuses and the comments of these players in in-group and out-group interactions were downloaded, transcribed, and translated into English. Analysis was done ethnographically by identifying contexts and contextualization cues in the translanguaging acts. The study shows that FB citizens, particularly the Tadpoles, used multiple linguistic competences in the online ideological battles as strategies to avoid possible legal consequences. English, Arabic, and local languages assumed to be inaccessible to the government officials and supporters were used as a means of covering disapprovals and discomforts with government policies. The study also shows how politically-marginalized speakers (the Foxes) make use of varied, multilingual linguistic competence as linguistic resources and symbolic capital to deconstruct and challenge hegemony of the government and its supporters (the Tadpoles).
