Royal jelly is a thick and milky bee product with high nutritional value. Besides the nutritional functions on queen and worker larvaes, it also has a very important role on the specific functions of queen bees. Due to its important biological properties, royal jelly has been used in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industry especially for the last 50-60 years as a functional and nutraceutical food. The studies have shown that royal jelly has antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitumor, neurotrophic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, hepatoprotective, antihypercholesterolemic, hypoglycaemic and effects on the reproductive system and fertility. These activities are attributed to the bioactive components it contains such as major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), jelleins and royalisin peptides and 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA). Especially MRJPs are considered an important factor in the development of queen bees. The aim of this study is to summarize and update physicochemical and bioactive properties of royal jelly, characterization and functions of royal jelly proteins (RJPs) and peptides.","PeriodicalId":205620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apitherapy and Nature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130713670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The antioxidant properties of this sample were determined to use total phenolic contents (TPCs), total flavonoid contents (TFCs), proanthocyanidin contents (PCs), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The mean of the total phenolic content was 6.33±0.11 mg GAE/ g sample, total flavonoid content was 1.88±0.11 mg QE/g sample, proanthocyanidin content was 0.86±0.00 mg CE/g sample, FRAP was also 72.38±0.21 µmoL FeSO4.7H2O/g, respectively. The obtaining results revealed that the pollen could be seen as a valuable natural source thanks to its significant antioxidant capacity.","PeriodicalId":205620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apitherapy and Nature","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123522272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although its cardioprotective, neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties have been emphasized so far, it also has anticancer properties. It has been reported to inhibit the proliferation of cancerous cells, prevent metastasis and tumor growth, and induce apoptosis in cancer cells through various mechanisms such as regulation of the omega-3/omega-6 ratio, inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, activation of caspase 3/9, and increasing mitochondrial membrane potential. It has been reported to induce apoptosis as well. It is believed that Krill can reduce the incidence of cancer and play an effective role in cancer treatment due to the above-mentioned properties.","PeriodicalId":205620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apitherapy and Nature","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123630217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cytotoxic effect of bee venom on a number of cancer cells has been revealed by different research groups. These in vitro studies are designed to include serial concentrations of bee venom under various incubation times, followed by the application of cytotoxicity assays. Common approach in the field is to determine the most effective cytotoxic conditions within those experienced. Differentially, in this study we aimed to understand whether the cytotoxic effect of venom obtained from Black sea Apis mellifera has been remained even if bee venom was removed after a while of incubation. For this aim, the conditions were determined in AR42J pancreatic cancer cells and the prolonged effect of bee venom under the determined concentrations was investigated. The findings showed that the cytotoxic effect of bee venom still continued in cells treated with bee venom once. This suggests that bee venom-induced cell death can be memorized by the cells in population somehow or/and bee venom may provoke a cascade of apoptosis occurring in a long time. This however needs further investigations.","PeriodicalId":205620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apitherapy and Nature","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133115375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New methods are needed for the practical characterization of royal jelly. In this preliminary study, SDS-PAGE electrophoretic profiles of royal jelly proteins were investigated. Raw royal jelly samples were analyzed by classical SDS-PAGE electrophoresis using 5% and 10% gels. The major protein spot were obtained at the samples collected same regions. Compared the proteins with known marker proteins they were between 50 and 80 kDa. Classical SDS-PAGE electrophoresis alone is not sufficient to determine royal jelly proteins, but can be used to basic characterization of royal jelly. Furthers electrophoretic techniques are needed for a better separation.","PeriodicalId":205620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apitherapy and Nature","volume":"217 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132775938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
