Various shortcomings due to the integration of digital tools to the manual design process have been enumerated during the past 30 years. Digital tools provide affordances different from the manual sketching design process, the effects of which can be understood by adopting a distributed cognition approach. The paper builds on design cognition research while using externalization tools in the design process. It does so by developing a theoretical framework derived from distributed cognition and an understanding of visual thinking processes from design literature. The paper utilizes the distributed cognition framework by Zhang and Norman, to arrive at resultant affordances of externalization tools in design. The same is then utilized for a protocol study which was coded for its visual thinking components and other relevant codes. The same protocol study was also coded for ideation flow analysis. The findings pointed towards compromised visual thinking and reduced ideation while utilizing digital tools in quick conceptualization.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123430924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

University autonomy is the initial governance model of higher education in Macao. Changes in the economic, political, and cultural environment have promoted the transformation of the governance model of higher education, experiencing a process of change from \"university autonomy\"-\"government intervention\"-\"social participation\". Based on the historical changes in the governance model of higher education in Macao, this research examines the current social participation mechanism in the governance of higher education. Taking the establishment of the Higher Education Committee of Macao as an example, we can understand the operating mechanism of social participation in the governance of higher education through policy compilation and in-depth interviews. The study found that the current social participation in the governance of higher education in Macao has achieved certain results, reflected in the protection of the legal system, the establishment of intermediary institutions, etc., but it also faces the unreasonable structure of the Higher Education Committee, the limited autonomy of the development of public universities, and limited social participation. Based on this, the study puts forward corresponding policy recommendations to provide ideas for social participation in the governance of higher education in Macao.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130509275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To measure the effectiveness of this initiative, this paper selects students' performance in mathematics as the measure. This paper uses the most recent data from the 2008-2013 questionnaire, adding family background factors as secondary variables, to create an OLS model. This paper status the preschool is crucial for increasing the scores of mathematics. The result indicates that students who have attended pre-school improve their future mathematics performance. Children's math achievement improved if the family was from a family with a high household income, siblings living together, a better educated mother, a father of superior status and someone in the family to read stories to the children.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125951514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, research on the leadership of college students has become an issue that the education circle generally attaches importance to, and has received widespread attention from the society. In order to understand in detail the influencing factors of the leadership of college students, and then explore an effective way to cultivate leadership, this paper collects the big data related to students in the “Leader Class of Dong Liang Project” (student leadership training program) in X School of a “Double Top” university in western China and compares them with those of non-“Leader Class” students, and finds that there are obvious differences between the two groups in academic performance, student leader experience and leadership training project experience. Subsequently, based on the questionnaire analysis of 375 college students, it further proves that the experience of serving as student leaders and leadership training program has a significant positive effect on the improvement of leadership of college students. On this basis, it is suggested that to cultivate the leadership of college students, we should pay attention to the construction and development of student societies, build a benign community ecology of students, integrate Internet technology to optimize the training mode of student leaders and build an innovative training platform for the leadership of college students.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114110809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, according to the Criteria for Performance Excellence and the evaluation index system for the implementation of the \"double first-class\" strategy, by analyzing the hierarchy of the influence factors of the construction of \"double first-class\" in China's western universities with ISM, 22 influence factors can be divided into five levels, which contact and influence each other. The results show that there is a stepwise hierarchical relationship among the evaluation indicators, and such four indexes as the construction of discipline and scientific research, international exchange and cooperation, the mode of talent cultivation and the public service have a direct impact on the construction of \"double first-class\" in China's western universities. What's more, factors such as organization and lead, social responsibility, understanding of students, relevant people and market, and working system play a supporting role. Thus, a reasonable construction path and measures for the construction of \"double first-class\" in China's western universities is proposed in this study.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128854988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research exposes the case study of three Latin American universities that seek to identify problems or educational situations to be addressed and developed innovation proposals in exploring in the solution, through an international collaborative initiative with teams of research professors focused on developing educational innovations that inspire and train future professionals. The case study methodology has three phases: 1) case design, 2) case description and 3) case evaluation. The case is analyzed from two perspectives: international initiative managers and the faculty who collaborate in research with their colleagues from other universities using the funds for the awarded projects. The challenges presented are many: from the generation of faculty teams, communication and collaboration at a distance, differences in structure and schedules between universities, and more. However, the benefits have been equally many as synergies have been created not only between universities and within the institutions themselves, but also with companies; another benefit is the learning and knowledge generated by the collaboration is impacting the students, who are the ultimate goal and inspiration of all academic endeavors.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131222766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The upcoming big data era provides great chance for novel findings in many old questions in the field of social science. High/low cultural context (cuco) is a key concept in cross-culture area, and its formation mechanism remains obscure and waits for systematic renew. It is possible to obtain more findings if large-scale multi-layer data are employed in the study of cultural context formation mechanism. As a preliminary endeavor toward this direction, this study conducted correlation analysis on twenty-nine culture/education parameters and thirty-three geography/society parameters from twenty-six representative countries, and found several factors that positively or negatively correlate with cultural context. The strongest positive one is PDI (power distance). Interestingly, two basic linguistic factors, alph (alphabet of the country’s main language) and cnso (consonants of the country’s main language), have slightly positive correlation with cuco, while another linguistic factor, vowe (vowels of the country’s main language), has a negative correlation with cultural context. The strongest negative correlation is InCo (individualism vs collectivism), suggesting that PDI and InCo may be two most relevant cultural factors that influence cultural context parameter. Meanwhile, ethnic diversity and high developmental level would bring positive and negative effects on cultural context value, respectively.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"9 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120919831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has seen wide adoption within several industries but few studies have investigated it for use in evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions and pedagogies. Pedagogies such as Project based learning (PBL) centers on learners solving an authentic problem or challenge which leads to knowledge creation and higher engagement. PBL also lends itself well in plugging the gap between what is taught in classrooms and applying the knowledge gained to the real working environment. In this study, we seek to investigate how we can use NLP techniques to uncover insights into and enhance our PBL process. Both topic modelling and sentiment analysis techniques are applied to analyze final year students’ reflections written as part of their final year project module. We described the entire process from text cleansing, pre-processing, modelling to visualization and evaluated the use of Latent Dirichlet Allocation and Attention Based Aspect Extraction for topic modelling. The results or visualizations which we derived from the topic and sentiment models showed that we can both effectively infer the key topics as reflected by our learners and extract actionable insights on the PBL process.","PeriodicalId":196340,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Technology in Education","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130456479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
