This article, which takes the form of a conversation, offers the perspectives\u0000 of two participants in Imagine to discuss how community organizations and communities work together and the impact of ethnic discrimination and disparity in universities. We set the conversation in the broader context of global discussions of knowledge production and power relationships. We\u0000 consider how universities, as large institutions, often create difficulties for smaller community organizations by focusing on their own interests. We address power and decision-making in Imagine, especially in relation to ethnicity. We seek to think about what needs to be done, both at strategic\u0000 levels in universities and on a personal level, to tilt the balance of benefit towards communities in collaborative relationships with higher education institutions.

With this in mind, the Public Engagement Professionals in University Research\u0000 Network convened a survey and workshop in 2017 to critically examine the skills and experiences of individuals in administrative roles in such projects. This paper argues that this is a highly skilled role that blurs boundaries between academic, administrator and engagement professional, but\u0000 within higher education institutions it is often poorly understood and, therefore, undervalued and unsupported.

The aim of these different groups working together is not only to share existing knowledge held by each of them, but also to build on existing knowledge in ways that groups of similar people struggle to do alone. Our own knowledge is always partial, with gaps and preferences that may differ from the gaps experienced and preferences held by other people. Bringing together people with different perspectives not only allows learning from each other, but also allows learning that is new to everyone involved. A first step is recognizing that each of us has our own way of looking at issues, and we may each be missing out if we do not enquire about how other people see them. Thinking about our different perspectives, blind spots and potential for learning together can be prompted by the visual model of the Johari window (Luft, 1961), named after its creators, Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingram. The Johari window was originally designed to encourage self-awareness and communication about behaviour. Rather than use it to investigate knowledge about ourselves as individuals, we have adapted it to analyse knowledge (and assumptions) about our world accrued from the perspectives open to different groups of people (see Figure 1). Instead of considering what is ‘known to self’ and ‘known to others’, which makes the Johari window helpful in psychology, we can consider what is ‘known to us’ and ‘known to others’ when thinking about research as a collective activity. Another change to the original model is recognizing that what is seen from multiple standpoints may be different yet equally important. Thus, analysing these differences may start with ‘us the researchers’ or ‘us the community’ or ‘us the service providers’ or ‘us the policymakers’ or ‘us the practising artists’ or ‘us the volunteers’, and so on, depending on the situation.

Within four days, the campaign was being utilized nationally by other trusts and charities.\u0000 By the New Year of 2015 it became international and had reached Australia and Canada. The intended audience for the campaign is broad and includes: patients, the general public, all staff working in health care and/or research including (but not limited to) National Health Service (NHS), commercial\u0000 companies, charities and schools. The campaign has become a community where patients, staff and public alike can share their voices about health research on an equal playing field. Each year, to coincide with International Clinical Trials Day (ICTD) on 20 May, a #WhyWeDoResearch 'Tweetfest'\u0000 is hosted. This includes a number of 'tweetchats' at set times throughout the Tweetfest. Tweetchats are hosted by experts in particular diseases or other areas. Patients and patient groups are included in this group of experts. However, there is limited literature on the impact that a combination\u0000 of co-production and widening participation approaches might have on students' learning, aspirations and self-esteem in the UK. The Research Methods in School Education (RISE) educational course aims to: (1) create a collaborative educational activity through co-production, giving young people\u0000 an opportunity to voice their opinions; (2) raise awareness of community health issues; and (3) increase access to higher education. In this article, we present subjective accounts of our everyday experiences of conducting participatory research\u0000 as women researchers. We focus on four themes from our combined research experiences to explore some of the frustrations we encounter in participatory research. We argue that it is crucial to identify, reflect upon and address such aspects in academic outputs to broaden debates and scholarly\u0000 discussions. We offer these reflections, and related strategies, as a contribution to critical debates on participatory research practice.

The event was a work-in-progress theatrical performance called The Translator , devised and produced by theatre\u0000 company Cap-a-Pie and associates, and staged on two nights in June 2017 in Leeds. Our aim was to create an active learning experience for the public about how they relate to 'otherness' and difference in communication, and how they think about their own responses to difficult communicative\u0000 situations. Lou first outlines her understanding of intercultural learning (Harvey, 2016, following Bakhtin, 1981), her engagement with Gert Biesta's pedagogy in the interest of publicness , and Biesta's own dialogue with Hannah Arendt on freedom and plurality. We then present filmed\u0000 rehearsal footage and a written description of some of the scenes from The Translator . This is followed by audience responses, which demonstrate the audience's discomfort arising from different aspects of misunderstanding in the performance and how this prompted them to consider their\u0000 own 'otherness' and their responsibilities for successful communication. The subsequent discussion draws on Lou's recent thinking in critical human rights theory to demonstrate how The Translator functioned as a public pedagogy of solidarity, in which the audience reflected on\u0000 our mutual responsibility to work to understand each other regardless of our cultural backgrounds and the languages we speak.

The members of the review team consisted of clinicians, academics and people with lived experience\u0000 of mental illness and mental health services. This combination of backgrounds had the potential to present many challenges to the dynamics of the group. There were varying levels of research knowledge and experience within the group, as well as a lack of literature describing how to actualize\u0000 their potential to best effect. Financial resources were minimal, which meant that the number of meetings had to be limited. Most importantly, however, there was the strong potential for a power imbalance within the group during the review process. Senior academics and clinicians were being\u0000 expected to help to create a research environment in which the patient voice carried as much weight as theirs. In this paper, we discuss how we overcame these challenges and ended up with a process that was coherent, equable and enjoyable.
