Based on this multidimensional model of acculturation, the purpose of this study was to expand current literature by examining how three acculturation domains and acculturative stress impacted counselor self-efficacy among 94 foreign-born students in counselor education. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression revealed that each acculturation domain, as well as acculturative stress, differentially contributed to counselor self-efficacy. Implications and recommendations for counselor educators and supervisors are provided.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"300 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122931960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is little data that has explored the use of motivational interviewing to address academic concerns in schools. This qualitative study explored the experiences of school counselors who have used motivational interviewing to improve student academic performance. The results revealed several themes including defining motivational interviewing in schools and explaining specific techniques. The themes that emerged from this study strengthen existing research and provide current and future school counselors with insight into the potential of using motivational interviewing to improve student academic performance.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125054358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers, staff, students, and parents engaged in healthy problem-solving, self-understanding, and self-regulation techniques and learned how traumatic experiences affect an individual’s ability to manage emotions. School-wide, classroom and individual activities integrated into the school day reduced office discipline referrals. We discuss implications and make recommendations for counseling professionals to initiate and collaborate in transforming schools into trauma responsive environments.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131960467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a lack of proper counselor training about IPV issues, and this may increase the risk that counselors are not providing clients with the necessary help to move past IPV. This article reviews the literature on counselor bias regarding IPV and offers practical strategies to enhance counselor competence in working with female IPV survivors. Recommendations include exploring and bias stigma, increased training in IPV, and education on state laws and policies.","PeriodicalId":153964,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123595865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To investigate this further, this study examines principals’ and counselors’ perceptions of the school counselor’s role. Analysis of the findings indicates school counselors and principals only have 52% agreement regarding appropriate counselor activities as described by the SCARS.
