Abstract

ABSTRACT Though millions of women are affected by intimate partner violence (IPV) every year, research shows that counselors may have biases against women who survive IPV and may shame them for their experiences. There is a lack of proper counselor training about IPV issues, and this may increase the risk that counselors are not providing clients with the necessary help to move past IPV. This article reviews the literature on counselor bias regarding IPV and offers practical strategies to enhance counselor competence in working with female IPV survivors. Recommendations include exploring and bias stigma, increased training in IPV, and education on state laws and policies.
