The final report is planned to be organized into five volumes: Volume I: Overview, Volume II: Computer Science, Volume III. Computer Engineering, Volume IV. Software Engineering, Volume V: Information Systems. A committee was established in the beginning of 2001 to define the body of knowledge that constitutes computer engineering as well as to develop course outlines to suit different curricula in computer engineering. The purpose of the article is to delineate the mission and the vision of the task and to invite members in particular and public in general to participate in this important activity.","PeriodicalId":137611,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2003 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education. Course outline and some examples of students' laboratories and/or individual projects present the complexity of the learning material. We have developed a method that will take this classwork beyond software simulation into actual hardware implementation. Students will be able to design, implement, and run a single-cycle MIPS processor on an FPGA. This paper presents the major steps in this work: the FPGA implementation of a MIPS processor, a debugging tool which provides complete control and observability of the processor, the reduction of the MIPS instruction set into the eight instructions that will be used by the processor, and an assembler that can map any MIPS non-floating point instruction into this set of eight supported instructions.","PeriodicalId":137611,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2003 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education. However, though learning such tools is indispensable, it should not come at a sacrifice of fundamental principles. To attain a balance between the practices and fundamental design concepts, we have adopted a \"design-oriented\" approach in the teaching of VHDL at CEFET-PR. Ideally, projects should be more than the implementation of a particular finite state machine. Projects should force students to think about technology and integration issues, while exposing them to cutting-edge architectures. For several years, we have used the Adaptive System-on-a-Chip (aSoC) as a foundation for a combined graduate-undergraduate VLSI design course. This novel SoC architecture provides a unifying theme to the course, while allowing the development of distinct and manageable sub-projects. Students are assigned to small groups, and are responsible for specific subsystems of the larger SoC. As a result, the success of the groups are linked, forcing all students to think about global issues and system integration. This framework also fosters development of student leadership and initiative.
