The contributions of dry and wet milling operations to contamination levels, sources, and health risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in processed maize were evaluated in this study. Maize samples procured from a major market in Ilorin were milled and analyzed for 8 PTEs (Cd, Fe, Pb, As, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Cr) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Apart from Cd, Pb, and As, the mean concentrations of other analyzed PTEs were within the permissible limits for PTEs in foodstuffs set by Codex Alimentarius Commission. The mean concentrations of Pb, Mn, and Zn increased from 2.75, 0.78, and 0.46 mg/kg in maize control to 3.03, 0.80, and 0.65 mg/kg in dry-milled maize, respectively, while mean concentrations of Fe, Pb, and Zn increased from 1.33, 2.75, and 0.46 mg/kg in maize control to 1.41, 2.90, and 0.49 mg/kg in wet-milled maize, respectively. The probable PTEs sources in milled maize identified using the positive matrix factorization model include wear of grinding disks; emissions from leaded fuel combustion; lubrication oil leakage during milling; vehicle traffic emissions; application of pesticides and herbicides; use of manure and Zn-enriched fertilizer; and irrigation with industrial wastewater. Assessment of hazard indexes (HIs) and lifetime cancer risks (LCR) revealed that associated health risks of PTEs from consumption of milled maize were insignificant, although HI and LCR results suggest the possibilities of health deterioration in children and adults from long-term consumption of milled maize in Ilorin. This study advocates improvement in maize cultivation and milling processes to avert PTEs contamination.Keywords: Maizepotentially toxic elementsmillingcontamination levelpositive matrix factorizationhealth risk AcknowledgementsThis research is funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Nigeria, through Grant Ref. The research conclusions are as follows: (1) The service value of ecological risk system is restricted by geographical location, natural conditions and other factors, and land resources are relatively fixed in a certain period; (2) Supply services are mainly food, energy and water resources provided by the environment for human beings. The value of regulatory services is mainly reflected in the ability of the environment to provide natural gas, climate, hydrological regulation and waste treatment. The value of support services refers to that the environment provides functions such as soil conservation and biodiversity maintenance; (3) Precise regional positioning and optimize land use structure. On the basis of ensuring the basic material needs, we should plan the land use structure, promote the optimal development of the land structure, and form a situation of coordinated development of ecological risks and economic benefits.Keywords: Ecological riskecological regulationremote sensing informationintelligent perceptionspatiotemporal evolution Data availabilityThe experimental data used to support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon request.Disclosure statementThe authors declared that they have no conflicts of interest regarding this work.","PeriodicalId":13118,"journal":{"name":"Human and Ecological Risk Assessment","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is conducted based on land use data and socio-economic data of Wuhan during the three periods of 2000, 2010, and 2020. Various models including the ecosystem service value model, ecosystem risk model, bivariate spatial autocorrelation model, and CA-Markov model are employed to calculate the spatial and temporal evolution as well as the correlation of ecosystem service values and ecological risks in Wuhan City over the past 20 years. Moreover, the study aims to predict the ecosystem service values and ecological risks for the year 2030 and establish an ecological zoning framework accordingly. The results show that: (1) The value of Wuhan’s ecosystem services show a trend of first decreasing and then increasing in the past 20 years. (2) The ecological risks of Wuhan show an overall upward trend, and the ecological risks in the study area are generally characterized by “high in the middle and low around”. (3) There is a significant positive spatial correlation between the value of ecosystem services and ecological risks in Wuhan. The overall ecological risk in the study area in 2030 is relatively alleviated compared with the previous two periods, and the ecological zones with a larger proportion are “low-low” and “low-high” zones. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2021 and October 2022 among 104 farmers from three Lebanese provinces. An Arabic survey (score-based questionnaire) was conducted to evaluate the farmers’ levels of understanding the pesticide labels (pictograms and color codes) and relevant practices to pesticide labels. Spearman correlation and One-Way ANOVA were applied to determine the statistical correlation between farmers’ understanding and practice levels and their significant differences in gender, age, provinces, educational level, and attendance of training programs. Results: It was found that the majority of the participants showed moderate levels of understanding (71.2%) and practices (75%). Spearman’s correlation analysis concluded a weak correlation between the understanding and performance levels (p < 0.05). Comparative analyses showed higher levels of label pictograms’ understanding and label-related practices with a significant difference (p < 0.05) among younger and well-educational farmers. However, training programs significantly enhanced the farmers’ practices only. Incidence of irritations-to-poisoning symptoms was self-reported as consequences of misinterpretations and misuse of pesticides. Conclusion: The study findings highlighted the limited effectiveness of pictograms and color codes in Lebanon and thereby highlighted the necessity of training programs addressing the knowledge of technical signs among farmers.Keywords: Pesticide labelpictogramsunderstandingpracticeslebanon Author contributionsWissam Ghach, and Sara About Ibrahim had contributed to the conceptualization, Manuscript writing, content review, data analysis, result interpretation, and project supervision. A crucial tool for assessing fine-scale climate impacts is the NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 dataset. This study utilized the NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 dataset to determine changes in extreme temperature and precipitation indices under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) relative to the baseline warming by 1.5 °C, 2 °C, and 3 °C. By using the Theil-Sen median trend and Mann-Kendall test methods, the research concluded that warming trends and increased humidity were on an upward trend. Fold differences (FD) between AEDHuman NAM predictions and adjusted (animal to human interspecies extrapolation) in vivo regulatory neurotoxicity points of departure (POD) were calculated to assess modeled predictions against measured in vivo data. Interspecies (animal to human) in vivo adjusted PODs were 0.147 mg/kg/d (CYF/βCYF), 0.180 mg/kg/d (ENDO) and 0.106 mg/kg/d (CPFO). ToxCast neurotoxicity assay results supported in vivo observations: CYF, βCYF and CPFO showed depressed neuroactivity, while ENDO showed increased neuroactivity. βCYF is known to have twice the toxicity of CYF in vivo but was less toxic in the in vitro assays. Percent assays with Z-Scores greater than 3 for CYF, βCYF, ENDO and CPFO were 100%, 100%, 67% and 71% respectively. Most AEDHuman were less than 10-FD indicating good predictivity of the in vivo adjusted PODs with ICE models. The NAMs were useful for characterizing the main neurotoxic activities and the ICE models were highly predictive of in vivo PODs to support mechanisms in risk assessment.Keywords: New approach methodologiesToxCastintegrated chemical environmentneurotoxic pesticides AcknowledgmentsI want to thank Dr. Eric Kwok Department of Pesticide Regulation, California Environmental Protection Agency for technical support for this project and Dr. Poorni Iyer, PhD, DABT Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, California Environmental Protection Agency for help reviewing this work.Authors’ contributionsI am the sole author of this work.Disclosure statementThe author declares that he has no actual or potential competing conflict of interests.","PeriodicalId":13118,"journal":{"name":"Human and Ecological Risk Assessment","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135816237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, current research lacks a multi-scale assessment of ecological quality and urbanization in urban agglomeration areas. Here, we assessed the multi-scale ecological quality and urbanization level of the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River Urban Agglomerations (MRYRUA) from 2001 to 2021 based on multi-source remote sensing imagery by constructing the remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) and the comprehensive nighttime light index (CNLI), respectively, and analyzed the coupling coordination degree (CCD) of the two using the CCD model. The following conclusions were obtained: (1) There are spatial differences in the ecological quality of pixel, county, and municipal scales. Multi-dimensional analysis indicates that the RSEI shows an increasing trend, and the ecological quality of the MRYRUA has generally improved in the past 20 years. (2) The DN values of nighttime light and the three light indices have increased to varying degrees at different scales, among which the average value of CNLI has increased from 0.02 in 2000 to 0.12 in 2021. The urbanization level of the MRYRUA is constantly improving, but there is an obvious development imbalance. (3) The ecological quality and urbanization level developed in a more coordinated direction at different scales, but the urbanization level lagged behind ecological quality as a whole, and the two were negatively correlated in space. The results of this study can guide the formulation of ecological protection and high-quality development policies in the MRYRUA.Keywords: Ecological qualityurbanizationRSEICNLICCDMRYRUA Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Additional informationFundingThis study was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (grant number 71663017).","PeriodicalId":13118,"journal":{"name":"Human and Ecological Risk Assessment","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135816395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small, rural water systems relying on groundwater frequently encounter elevated metal(loid) measures, particularly inorganic arsenic (As +3, +5). Such contaminant occurrences can be associated with adverse health outcomes including cancers. The Hopi Environmental Health Project examined drinking water quality and water consumption behaviors from 76 homes on Hopi lands over a four-year period. Water samples were analyzed for 28 elements and compared to US Environmental Protection Agengy (EPA) maximum contaminant levels (MCL). Only municipal/piped water had a mean arsenic concentration (11.01 μg/L) exceeding the MCL (10.0 μg/L). All other water types and elements occurred below MCL when detected. A lifetime cancer and hazard quotient associated with arsenic consumption through each water type was performed and piped/municipal water was found to carry the greatest risks (9.96 cases per 10,000 people).
