Ionising radiations can have serious consequences on the health of people in contact. The practitioner should not ignore regulatory texts on such protection, and it is his responsibility to undertake some actions related to the radiological equipment and premises installation. He must obtain an authorization for radiography equipment, and verify the conformity of the device and all related radiological installations. Radiation sources, ambiance and premises must be controlled in terms of risk assessment and limitation. The radioprotection of the personnel in a private veterinary clinic begins, according to regulatory texts, by the designation of a person with specific radioprotection competence. This person, adequately trained in accordance with current regulation, must ensure the compliance with the protection recommendations, organize the follow-up of the personnel, and implement those means necessary to protect employees and visitors from the radiations.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100463,"journal":{"name":"EMC - Vétérinaire","volume":"1 4","pages":"Pages 125-137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.emcvet.2004.06.001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72041146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The old chemical groups like organophosphorates and pyrethroids have been supplanted by new compounds such as phenypyrazoles (fipronil) or neonicotoinoids (imidacloprid). Beside insecticidal and acaricidal molecules, Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) have appeared and are increasingly used. They are divided in two groups, the juvenile hormone analogues (Pyriproxyfen, (S) -methoprene) and the inhibitors of the chitine synthetase (lufenuron). These IGRs are used either in the environment or in pets (topically or by oral administration), alone or in the majority of cases in combination with insecticides. The notion of insecticidal treatment has changed towards the concept of prevention. This change was possible after the development of long-acting formulations which provide at least one month of protection. In parallel, their utilization has been facilitated by new formulations, especially the development of the “spot on”. The veterinarians as well as the pet owners have now a wide diversity of products, with new molecules, new formulations but also very good safety. The combination of insecticides and IGRs allow the veterinarians to advise Integrated Pest Management Program, especially Integrated Flea Control.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100463,"journal":{"name":"EMC - Vétérinaire","volume":"1 4","pages":"Pages 138-153"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.emcvet.2004.05.002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72041145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first clinical sign of anaemia is the paleness of the mucosae. Other symptoms may be induced by hypoxia or by the cause of anaemia itself. A thorough clinical analysis resulting in a specific diagnosis is necessary for a complete, successful treatment. Fortunately, by using a systemic approach of the clinical presentation, the history, physical examination, and laboratory testing, making definitive diagnosis is easy most of the time. The increasing availability of semi-automated or automated haematology instrumentation allows more efficient testing than in the past. Automated cell counters determine red blood cells count, the mean corpuscular volume of the erythrocyte population and haemoglobin concentration and eventually calculate mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and the index of red cell distribution. However, the first step is to classify the anaemia as regenerative or non regenerative with blood smear evaluation and reticulocyte count. In regenerative anaemia, blood loss or haemolysis should be sought. In non regenerative anaemia, the aetiological diagnosis is based on the identification of normochromic normocytic anaemia, hypochromic microcytic anaemia, or hypo/normochromic macrocytic anaemia.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100463,"journal":{"name":"EMC - Vétérinaire","volume":"1 4","pages":"Pages 154-174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.emcvet.2004.05.001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72041147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of two distinct systems: the secreting apparatus and the excretory apparatus. Affections related to these two systems are frequent and sometimes under-diagnosed. Most of the time, the affections of the lachrymal excretory apparatus are revealed by an overflow apart from the lachrymal pathways, called the epiphora. If most of the time the lachrymal excretory apparatus diseases have only aesthetic consequences, it is not the case for those diseases of the secreting system since tears occur within the correct function of the cornea and thus of the vision.
