Three separate components of construct validity (substantive, structural and external) as outlined by Loevinger (1957) were examined and evaluated. A total of 144 non-college adults represented three criterion groups (salesmen, policemen and service volunteers) for the three interpersonal need areas (inclusion, control and affection) measured by the FIRO-B. None of the expectations regarding the three components of validity were supported. The present study was designed as a partial test of the broader theory that paranoid schizophrenia in men involves severe anxiety over aggression or assertion. The subjects were men and women in three categories: paranoid schizophrenic, nonparanoid schizophrenic, and people without any history of psychiatric trouble. Using a set of TAT cards portraying various situations of anger and aggression, it was found, as predicted, that paranoid schizophrenic men, and only paranoid schizophrenic men, show a defensive response. The Rorschach test was administered to 32 Ss in the waking state and under hypnosis in counterbalanced order. Hypnosis was induced by a standardized procedure. Ss received identical instructions for the Rorschach in both conditions. Protocols were scored according to Holt's system for manifestations and control of primary process. Hypnotic Rorschachs showed an increase in primary process manifestations, but no changes in defensive and coping functioning, and no overall changes in the Adaptive Regression Score. Suicidal, psychiatrically disturbed but not suicidal, and normal adolescents were administered the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Test. Their protocols were scored for intropunitiveness. No significant differences in intropunitive scores were found among the three groups of subjects. Two measures were used: first, the mean potency score, and, second, the mean score on the masculine-feminine (M - F) subscale. It was found that a number of discrepancies occurred between (a) mean potency and mean M - F scores; (b) mean potency score and predictions based on psychoanalytic theory; and (c) mean M - F scores and predictions based on psychoanalytic theory. The estimates of extraversion arrived at by the 18 listener-judges did not correlate significantly with the EPI measure of extraversion. Despite this lack of criterion validity, some voices were clearly and reliably rated as more introverted or extraverted than others. The stimuli were brief video sequences portraying themes of sex, aggression, achievement, affiliation, nurturance, dominance, and order. The Dream Incident Technique was most predictive of pupillary dilation to these scenes. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule correlated only with self reports of stimulation.
