The diagnostic label \"borderline\" has predominantly been used in North America; nevertheless, many roots of this conception originate in the classical European psychiatry and psychoanalysis. The various diagnostic (mainly descriptive) criteria and characteristics of the borderline are discussed, as well as the most important psychoanalytic hypotheses and conceptions (such as splitting, projective identification, identity diffusion). The therapeutic principles are mentioned as well. The analysis of the surveyed literature reveals on the one hand, that a well defined borderline exists neither as a generally acknowledged clinical entity nor as a circumscribed psychopathological syndrome. On the other hand, there are three various borderline concepts clearly discernible: 1) borderline conceptualized as a form of schizophrenia, 2) borderline conceptualized as synonymous with the general category of psychopathy (personality disorder) and 3) borderline conceptualized as a special form of psychopathy.</p>","PeriodicalId":75864,"journal":{"name":"Fortschritte der Neurologie, Psychiatrie, und ihrer Grenzgebiete","volume":"48 3","pages":"140-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-2007-1002374","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17949915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main problems are the definition of the Normal Population and the fact that a certain methodical error in measurement is not to be avoided. On the other hand, that differentiation is essential for the diagnosis of Ventricular Enlargement, Hydrocephalus internus and Brain Atrophy. The daily practice requires a method, which allows an accurate measurement as well as a quick and simple performance. The evaluation of the width of the lateral ventricles by means of the Ventricle-Index-Quotient (VIQ) and of the Ventricle-Waist-Quotient (VTQ) is likely to meet all these requirements. The results have been obtained from the computer-tomograms of 53 men and 69 women (n = 122), aged between 15 and 80 years. A statistically significant correlation was found between the VIQ- and VTQ-values on the one hand, and the patient's ages on the other. Archetypical conciousness is understood as a special step in the emergence of the human mind, thought and self-consciousness. The freedom of thinking--as the highest function of the human mind--is lost in every psychotic disorder. Während man friiher nur auf die körperliche Tauglichkeit geachtet hat, setzt sich immer mehr die Ansicht durch, daß in den Tropen viel mehr Menschen an psychischer Nichtanpassung leiden als an körperlichen Erkrankungen. Die tropischen Infektionskrankheiten haben durch die modemen pharmakologischen Behandlungsmethoden weitgehend ihre Schrecken verloren. Die körperliche Gesundheit ist allerdings viel leichter festzustellen als die psychische Ausgeglichenheit. Der Psychiater kann immer nur in bestimmten Fällen von Untauglichkeit sprechen, aber selbst bei Fehlen aller vorhersehbaren Schwierigkeiten kann er nichts über die praktische Bewährung sagen. Für den Tropendienst gelten ähnliche Voraussetzungen wie für den Wehrdienst und es können daher einige Grundsätze in leicht abgewandelter Form übertragen werden. In dieser Arbeit wird der Versuch gemacht, einige wesentliche Faktoren darzulegen, die der Psychiater bei der Beurteilung der Tropendienstfähigkeit beachten muß. Außerdem wird ein standardisierter Untersuchungsgang vorgeschlagen, der Vergleiche der Ergebnisse verschiedener Untersucher zuläßt, damit in Zukunft internationale Regeln aufgestellt werden können.","PeriodicalId":75864,"journal":{"name":"Fortschritte der Neurologie, Psychiatrie, und ihrer Grenzgebiete","volume":"48 3","pages":"175-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-2007-1002377","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17949917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
