CO binds to cytochrome c oxidase and alters mitochondrial redox balance and coordinately regulates mitochondrial quality control (MQC) during oxidant stress and inflammation. Exercise can trigger mechanisms that can create an optimal brain state during sleep to facilitate memory processing. However, the relatively low muscle force and rapid muscle fatigue induced by NMES limit the stimulus provided to the neuromuscular system and subsequent adaptations. We postulate that the microvascular network between muscle fibers plays a critical role in satellite cell function.
