Experiential learning in collegiate classrooms provides students with the opportunity to bridge the gap between theory-based knowledge and real-life experiences (DeLuca &amp; Fornatora, 2020). Furthermore, this pedagogy has the potential to enhance students' resumes and boost job satisfaction in sport industry positions (Brown et al., 2018; Foster &amp; Pierce, 2021; Wanless et al., 2016). Sponsorship activation has become a legitimate element of the marketing mix and encompasses a large portion of marketing budgets for companies (O'reilly &amp; horning, 2013). With that being said, sport marketing graduate students at a Southwestern University engaged in a sponsorship activation project for one of the school's major athletic sponsors as part of their sport marketing class. The experiential learning opportunity provided students with real-world examples of sport marketing while providing them with a sponsorship activation experience. The project received positive feedback from students including their appreciation for the practical experience.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"34 ","pages":"Article 100475"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2024-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S147383762300059X/pdfft?md5=c77d2df0932612cb94fb876c18ee7388&pid=1-s2.0-S147383762300059X-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139107249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tourism industry is ever-growing with sustainability concerns. It also consumes a large-scale workforce to sustain this industry. “Can a pedagogy influence the process of workforce development and conditioning their mindset to be sustainability-focused to implement interconnected SDGs?” is a meaningful question to pose at this juncture. The SDGs are very relatable concepts throughout various hospitality and tourism curriculums. Thus, enforcing the idea of SDGs through structured or unstructured fashion in the curriculum can help generate knowledge, which eventually translates to operationalizing the ideas, leading to positive outcomes. As sustainability themes become more relevant and an absolute necessity in the tourism industry, changing the mindset during the process of workforce development could accelerate the operationalization of SDGs.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"34 ","pages":"Article 100476"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1473837623000606/pdfft?md5=d00e12bc5cf15bde5b4dc37612a75733&pid=1-s2.0-S1473837623000606-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139070770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, according to the literature, tourism graduates appear to have inadequate levels of financial skills. The perceived lack of required competences results in a competitive disadvantage for tourism graduates in favour of those who studied Management &amp; Business Administration, or equivalent degrees. To explain this gap, some authors point to the scarcity of finance-related courses within the curriculum of most of tourism or hospitality programs, but it is also suggested that the characteristics of the students enrolling in tourism and hospitality degrees could play a relevant role, highlighting that those students lack the required background knowledge and attitudes resulting in major constraints for financial competences development.</p><p>Our study compares the levels of financial literacy, financial self-efficacy, numeracy, and financial interest of entry-level students enrolled in these two competing university degrees, Tourism and Management &amp; Business Administration. The purpose of this study is to examine personal traits that increase or decrease intercultural communication apprehension (ICA) among American hospitality students. Using quantitative analysis of data from 370 American college students enrolled in hospitality programs in the United States, this research revealed that cultural intelligence (CQ) and core self-evaluations (CSE) can decrease ICA while ethnocentrism promotes ICA. The results further showed that the positive link between ethnocentrism and ICA can be diminished by CSE. Practical implications and theoretical contributions of the findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"34 ","pages":"Article 100464"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1473837623000485/pdfft?md5=b6a66893a378c656857975eea3810cc4&pid=1-s2.0-S1473837623000485-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138413120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study advances extant research that analyzes coursework by also applying social cognitive career theory (SCCT) to examine the relationships between problem-based learning, teachers' transformational leadership, and students' self-efficacy and employability. Over a timeframe of four years, 919 undergraduate hospitality management students participated in this research. Structural equation modeling identified significant positive correlations between students' self-efficacy, problem-based learning and employability, as well as teachers' transformational leadership. In addition, problem-based learning and students' self-efficacy were key mediators of the relationship between teachers' transformational leadership and student’ employability. No significant differences were found among mode of instruction or faculty member. Hence, this research provides a baseline for evaluation of various pedagogical methods and content delivery in hospitality education.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"33 ","pages":"Article 100465"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136696486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focus group interviews were conducted at ten different Chinese universities that provide tourism management programs. Moreover, it examines the moderating roles of physical activity and self-efficacy on these relationships. Data were collected through questionnaires from undergraduate students at the departments of tourism management, gastronomy and culinary arts, recreation management and tourist guidance across nine different universities. A convenience sampling method, one of the non-probability sampling methods, was employed, reaching a total of 719 respondents. The study revealed that social disconnectedness increased social media addiction, which in turn escalated social appearance anxiety, thereby reducing the students' intention to build a career in tourism. Nevertheless, it was found that physical activity can mitigate the negative impact of social disconnectedness on social media addiction. Additionally, self-efficacy buffered the adverse effect of social appearance anxiety on the intention to pursue a career in tourism. The results of this study provide valuable insights and recommendations for tourism education and career counseling, enabling a deeper comprehension of the psychosocial factors that may influence students' career development and intentions.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"33 ","pages":"Article 100463"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2023-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50187384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design-based thinking process was designed as an educational content that consists of ‘problem’, ‘empathy and define’, ‘ideate’, ‘prototype’ and ‘test’ stages. The research also examined the effectiveness of the application based on student experiences. In this context, the phenomenology approach, one of the qualitative research designs, was used, and observation, interview and document analysis methods were applied in the research. It was found that the activities encouraged tourism students to think creatively and actively, and were also useful in improving communication, teamwork, decision-making and empathy skills of the students. Also, it was concluded that design-based learning, which encourages students to learn by practice, improves memorability, develops a positive attitude towards the course, increases cooperation, and encourages class attendance. It is believed that the research will guide educators on how they will integrate the design thinking approach into the curriculum.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":51666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hospitality Leisure Sport & Tourism Education","volume":"33 ","pages":"Article 100460"},"PeriodicalIF":3.7,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50187385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
