Abstract

Higher education institutions have a fundamental role in the social and economic dynamics of any country, with a decisive influence on their students’ future careers, particularly in stimulating entrepreneurship. Their formative role is crucial, including in structural issues such as gender equality in the business context. This study aims to identify and analyse the lines of action implemented by higher education institutions (HEI) with courses in the area of sport to promote sport entrepreneurship, particularly in the field of female entrepreneurship. A qualitative approach was adopted, applying a semi-structured interview to 21° coordinators in the area of sport, belonging to both state and private HEIs in Portugal. The results indicate that some HEIs have shown concern about applying strategies to stimulate entrepreneurship in sport, but they do so in a random way. The results also suggest the need to be able to re-adapt course curricula in order to promote sport entrepreneurship more through different strategic actions such as: specific curricular units, extra-curricular activities, setting up a department devoted to entrepreneurship, besides the need to create specific initiatives to stimulate female entrepreneurship. Also suggested is optimization of the synergy between HEIs, the work environment and government. Articulation between these stakeholders would contribute to a more entrepreneurial culture, particularly in relation to female entrepreneurship in the sport context.
