At the same time, cybermedia is one of the factors driving national stability, as well as a factor encouraging democratization. This study aimed to determine the ethical and legal model indicators of cybermedia from the Indonesia Cybermedia Union (SMSI) of North Sumatra case study. The research is a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data were collected from interviews with 39 journalists through questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGD) with two press experts, two North Sumatra SMSI administrators and an honorary board member of the press organization. The results of this study indicated that five problems were indicators of models for implementing press ethics and law in cybermedia. First, increasing the competence of journalists in several ways, such as encouraging journalists to take the journalist competency tests and conducting training; second, encouraging cybermedia verification by the Press Council; third, providing legal assistance for journalists who were caught in the law; fourth, following the existing rules of press ethics and law. This was done because cybermedia did not have its own rules of ethics and press law; fifth, conducting an interaction model with stakeholders through journalist competency test activities.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141650404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the representation of women in Disney movies was always through a patriarchal lens. This research investigates the portrayal of women characters in contemporary Disney movies Moana (2016) and Mulan (2020) and analyses how they differ from the traditional portrayal of women in Disney movies using the theoretical framework of postmodern feminism and patriarchy. The paper analyses how travel empowers these women and what significant changes it brings about in the development of their characters. The paper also explores the psyche of these women characters and how their journey inspires young adults, especially today’s women. The paper serves as a lens into society and the influence of media and other popular culture in the perceptions formed about women and how they are supposed to be.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141650124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when observing these research results, one will find that more research results are about the Western media, and there are few reports about the Chinese media on the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employs corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis to examine what kinds of discourse Hong Kong media use to represent China in the news. The Sing Tao Daily was chosen for the study because it has been in existence for a long time and has readers all over the world. Its coverage of China COVID-19 will affect Hong Kong people's perception of their motherland. Hong Kong is unique in that it has just recently returned to China. The Hong Kong media's coverage of mainland China will affect China's national image in the minds of Hong Kong people. This study aims to examine what discourses are used by the Hong Kong news media in their coverage of China's fight against the epidemic and what kind of national image of China is presented to the Hong Kong and global audiences. The analysis reveals that China is presented as a victim, and an advantageous cooperative country. China is a responsible big country that has assumed the responsibility of helping countries in difficulty and is a united country. China's actions have had a positive impact on global humanitarian ideology. This study illustrates how the media can effectively utilize discursive strategies to promote cooperation and build a country's image in the midst of a global health crisis.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141366179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to ascertain whether a company's marketing activities accurately reflect its business practices. Specifically, it investigates whether businesses with LGBTQ marketing initiatives actively advocate for and uphold workplace equality. The research compiles a list of companies, regardless of nationality but with offices in India, featuring at least one audio-visual LGBTQ marketing campaign that is broadcast on TV or the internet. The study consults workplace equality index reports, the company's website, or its available job descriptions to determine the extent to which these companies practice workplace equality. The research reveals that approximately half of the companies running LGBTQ advertisements do not actively promote workplace equality. Conversely, companies listed in workplace equality index reports do not incorporate LGBTQ advertisement campaigns. The findings demonstrate no discernible correlation between a company's advertising campaign and its workplace equality policy.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141386797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emphasis of the study was on undergraduate media students. The objectives of this study were to estimate their research abilities, evaluate the efficiency of some studies conducted, and identify areas for improvement. A survey was employed to collect data about the results of the final examination of the research methods subject. The study gathered 100 scores, representing three batches of male and female students. The study used the independent sample t-test to compare the means for the two groups of males and females and then explain the differences and effect size. The results showed that female students have much higher research method scores (79.3) than male students (74.9). The standard deviation for male research methods scores (10.9) is higher than that for male students (9.8), indicating higher variability in female scores. The standard error of the mean estimates the precision of the sample mean. It is higher for male students (1.5) than for female students (1.4). Hence, male students needed more accuracy in estimating the population mean due to the large variability in their scores. The effect size was (d = 0.41). There were differences (t (df = 98, p =.035) in the scores, with the mean score for the females (M = 79.3, SD = 9.8) being higher than the males (M = 74.9, SD = 10.9). In conclusion, testing students' research skills revealed a slight difference between male and female media B.Sc. students.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141382381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, it is clear that election coverage dominates program content and news from the mass media, particularly television. Narasi TV also reported on these electoral issues by airing the Musyawarah show, a special program about the 2024 presidential election. Based on this, the study’s goals are to evaluate the role of Narasi TV’s creative team in shaping the media agenda for the 2024 presidential election, as well as to determine what Narasi TV and the creative team anticipate from the public through the Musyawarah program. The research method used in this article is a qualitative research method, specifically the descriptive-qualitative method, with a focus on data from literature reviews and various references to analyze how the Narasi TV creative team applies the Agenda Setting theory to the issue of the 2024 presidential election through the Musyawarah program. The results showed that Narasi TV’s media agenda on the issue of the 2024 presidential election is as follows: the existence of a special program on the issue of the 2024 presidential election, namely the Musyawarah program; and the creative team’s media agenda for the Musyawarah program, with an effort to raise issues around the 2024 presidential election that are frequently disregarded or neglected despite being less significant than other mass media.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141383012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the investigation of the college students during the epidemic of Covid-19, we found that the willingness of the public to carry out health behaviors was influenced by two kinds of factors: external social environment and individual internal conditions. As far as the external environment is concerned, perceived normative influence of “Significant others” and informational influence from mass media can positively promote the implementation intention of health protection behavior. At the same time, media attention can also indirectly affect the public's willingness to carry out health behaviors through the mediating effects of self-efficacy and coping efficacy, respectively. As far as internal factors are concerned, self-efficacy is the most powerful direct factor to predict individuals' health behaviors. The existence of cognitive deficit and optimism bias results in the failure of the predictive power of the element of threat assessment on the willingness to carry out health behaviors, however, perceived severity can have a negative effect on health behavior intention through the mediation of the “Avoidance” concept. The study also found that the emotional response not only positively affected the intention to carry out healthy behaviors independently of the cognitive assessment process, but also played a positive moderating role between media attention and the intention to carry out healthy behaviors, however, improper risk concept may have a blocking effect on the implementation intention of health behavior.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141383192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By exploring this topic, the study aims to shed light on important questions about the origins of these misunderstandings and their effects on economic interactions. To achieve this objective, the research will draw upon valuable insights from previous agreements, intercultural bargaining, and global economic relations. It is crucial to emphasize that economic misunderstandings in conversations arise from various factors, including differences in language structure, disparities in cultural backgrounds, and varying contexts. These elements contribute to the confusion surrounding economic terminology, such as sentence structure, vocabulary and meaning difficulties, and contrasting communication styles. The research also examines the influence of cultural nuances and investigates how past events, cultural practices, and societal legacies shape the understanding of economic terms. The importance of effective communication in promoting trust and facilitating successful economic collaboration cannot be overstated. It goes beyond the economic implications of unfavorable trade terms and strained international relations. This research delves into the challenges faced by interpreters and negotiators, highlighting how technology can either alleviate or exacerbate the issue of miscommunication. Ultimately, it serves as a reminder that managers' misunderstandings play a pivotal role in economic dialogues. In today's interconnected global economy, clear and precise communication is essential for productive negotiations and the maintenance of long-lasting international business relationships. To address this, we propose proactive measures such as supporting training programs, leveraging technology wisely, and demonstrating a strong commitment to intercultural communication. The study underscores the significance of adopting effective communication strategies to navigate complex economic conversations and uphold harmonious global economic relationships in an ever-changing world.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140976054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Botswana, Facebook has become one of the primary channels for news consumption, mirroring trends seen in various nations. However, the 2021 Australian Facebook conflict exposed the risks associated with over-reliance on such platforms for news dissemination. In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of platform dependency, specifically examining the implications for Botswana, in the wake of the Australian Facebook news blackout. Employing a stratified sampling approach, data was gathered by tracking the volume of news posts shared across 51 selected Facebook pages throughout February 2021. The findings revealed a noteworthy trend, with an average of 5630 news items posted or shared on the platform within four weeks. This marked a growing reliance on Facebook-exclusive pages for news consumption, with minimal engagement observed on alternative websites. We argue that there is a precarious position of pages solely reliant on Facebook for news sharing, especially amidst escalating big data politics and regulatory measures that target Tech Giants. Consequently, these pages face an uncertain future, potentially hampering access to vital news reporting and information-sharing to the adaptive population. Currently, in Botswana, there is a notable dearth of academic exploration into the regulation of Big Tech and its potential repercussions for the nation. Thus, this study serves as a cornerstone in pursuing this significant area of inquiry.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140973001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, memes are often underestimated. The researcher has noticed that TikTok is not merely a platform as it is also a memetic, complex text. As a platform, TikTok not only mediates and facilitates the production of short videos but also becomes a culture. Through the Don't Play Play Bosku audio meme phenomenon, this study aims to provide a perspective on how meme themes are conveyed to the public to create a high engagement space and what sorts of ideology are offered by creators in the TikTok culture space. The researcher conducted digital ethnographic observations, qualitative content analysis, and used the Shifman’s three-dimension approach to analyze 10 video samples qualitatively. This study found three meme themes, including inadequacy, metaphor and a practice of playfulness, and mental satire. At the content level, memes are not only an expression of videos but also an audio control to negotiate. At the form level, memes are delivered with word twists, reactions, and effects frequently repeated. The practice of memes at the stance level indicates that the ideological position of creators in bringing up memes is an elaboration of videos and audio that give birth to these three themes in the mechanism of TikTok culture. Memes as a TikTok culture is a culture that is actively produced and continuously consumed. The construction of TikTok culture is formed from the rituals shared in algorithm-framed imitation and replication.","PeriodicalId":509525,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140980513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
