The paper presents the results of analysing 100 newspaper articles covering various aspects of bilingualism in the region – the main themes and subthemes associated with bilingualism are identified and both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data are conducted. The study is novel in that it presents the first characterization of the coverage of bilingualism in the Acadian press. As a result, the study reveals that regarding the coverage of bilingualism, the New Brunswick press primarily focuses on internal provincial affairs – the representation of bilingualism at the national level is barely reflected; failures and problems related to the implementation of bilingualism in the province are covered more extensively than the successes and achievements of implementing the institutional bilingualism policy. There is explicit criticism of the implementation of the language policy by the regional authorities – their actions and inactions; the articles note violations of Francophones’ rights and numerous difficulties in implementing bilingualism, including those arising from the entrenched conflict between Anglophones and Francophones in the province. However, measures to develop real bilingualism in various spheres of public life undertaken by the government, organizations, and ordinary citizens of the region are also highlighted; the authors of the articles and interviewees postulate ideas about the economic benefits of bilingualism and its value as part of the Acadian identity.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The paper presents examples of the linguistic representation of emotional states in German-language political texts. Special attention is given to the analysis of metaphorical models used to verbalize emotions, reflected in the statements of German politicians, articles by political commentators and journalists addressing various issues in German political life, as well as the global community as a whole. The work briefly covers the existing definitions in modern science of the terms “political discourse”, “metaphor”, and “emotive”, which are fundamental to this study. The study is novel in that it is the first to identify and analyze the following metaphorical models used to represent various emotions in the political discourse of Germany: the image of “flowing emotions”, the image of emotions as fire, the image of the elements / destructive forces of nature, the image of emotions as a living being, the image of emotions as an illness/poison, the image of emotions as light. As a result, the study reveals that metaphor in Germany’s political discourse is a productive means of verbalizing emotional states, with negative emotions prevailing over positive ones.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The work is novel in that it is the first to consider and systematize different points of view of critics and literary scholars on the nature of the doctor’s artistic image, on the doctor’s place in the cultural and historical space of Russia. The research aims to identify the key trends in the reception of the doctor’s image in Russian criticism and literary studies in the 20th and 21st centuries. As a result, it is found that while the thinkers of the 19th century highlight characterological features of a doctor character such as inner freedom, thirst for knowledge and empiricism of thinking inherent in the new generation, the critics and literary scholars of the early 20th century consider a doctor character in the context of the era of scientific discovery. During the period of totalitarianism, the hero is evaluated in terms of having “obligatory” qualities and his involvement with socialism and its achievements. Since the late 1980s, a doctor character has been analyzed from the position of his belonging to the intelligentsia, whose representatives are characterized by internal contradictions. The studies of the early 21st century attempt to reinterpret traditional renderings of Russian classical literature, outline new approaches to the analysis of a literary image: a doctor character is presented as a bearer of the highest spiritual value, a way to transmit hidden meanings.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The paper employs the cognitive modeling methodology involving an analysis of the system of conceptual models with signifiers such as ‘ветеринар’ (veterinarian), ‘ветеринарный врач’ (veterinary doctor), ‘ветврач’ (vet) and its interpretation. The work examines the linguistic representation of conceptual dominants at the lexico-semantic level, identifying the basic conceptual features of the object. Three main roles of a veterinarian presented in the media, i.e., a doctor, an expert, and a scientist, are identified and analyzed. The research is novel in that it is the first to provide a linguistic description of the contemporary media image of a veterinary doctor based on journalistic contexts captured in the Russian National Corpus. As a result, the work reveals that the most developed image in the media is that of a veterinary doctor, concentrating the values of veterinary discourse and exhibiting the distinguishing features of appearance and behavior. The role of a veterinarian-expert is the most frequently recorded one in the media, characterized by stereotypical and abstract speech. The role of a veterinarian-scientist is the least common one in media discourse, with its media image not fully developed and represented by standard speech formulas. Conclusions are drawn regarding the perceptions of veterinarians in the media compared to their self-identification and literary portrayals. Overall, the media construct a stereotypical image of a veterinary doctor as an animal lover and savior, which largely fails to reflect essential values of veterinary discourse such as customer orientation, professional solidarity, and academic rigor.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the authors of the article established the prevailing types of translation transformations when rendering the analyzed work from English into Russian by two translators, which provided the researchers’ contribution to the concept of translation plurality proposed by R. R. Tchaikovsky. As a result of the research, difficulties in translation were identified related to the transfer of lexical-semantic, lexical-grammatical, syntactic organization, emotionally charged vocabulary and the structural embodiment of the author’s poetic text, as well as to the subjectivity of choosing a translation solution. To achieve an adequate translation of the poem under study, the use of definite transformations expanded the range of searches for compensation for lost meaning and provided translators with a certain degree of creative freedom, the boundaries of which were established by the original.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. Hang","doi":"10.30853/phil20240122","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30853/phil20240122","url":null,"abstract":"This article is devoted to the analysis of the structural features of Russian and English folk riddles containing parametric data in the descriptive part. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the implementation of prototypical constructions of folk riddles containing an indication of the parametric data of the denotation. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time Russian and English riddles are analyzed from the point of view of the linguistic implementation of a stable prototypical model of the enigmatic genre. For the first time, the inclusion of parametric indicators in the descriptive part of a folk riddle is considered as a way to realize the effect of an illogical consequence typical for the structure of the genre organization; in addition, the authors for the first time investigate the presence of a “linguocultural” codification of the denotation through parametric data. The results showed that the inclusion of parametric indicators in the description of the denotation is due to the need to implement a prototypical model of the enigmatic genre – the model of illogical consequence. In addition, it was found that the inclusion of parametric indicators in the English and Russian corpus of folk riddles is often implemented using zoomorphic and anthropomorphic codes. During the analysis of the illustrative material, it was found that for the Russian folk riddle, the appeal to parameters is associated with the tendency to describe a number of independent objects as a single mechanism, which directly reveals the logic of archaic human thinking, while the appeal to parametric data within the framework of the English riddle is motivated by the description of a procedural action.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. N. Ostrovsky’s play “The Storm” in the first Chinese translation of the play by Geng Jizhi, a literary scholar and translator. Through the comparative analysis, the translation strategies are determined, taking into account the peculiarities of the translator’s perception and interpretation of the female characters. Among them, Geng Jizhi’s interpretation of Katerina’s image is particularly concerned, which has affected the view of Chinese scholars on Katerina’s image, that is, she is a strong character with a “storm” personality. The scientific novelty of this research lies in the fact that it is the first to specifically study the translation reception of the play “The Storm” in China and to consider the peculiarities of the female characters’ perception and recreation in Chinese. The research reveals that the translator hopes to retain the national color of Ostrovsky’s play and reproduce the characters’ speech, behavior and their personality traits. But at the same time, in Geng Jizhi’s translation, Kabanova’s and Varvara’s characters are more introverted and Feklusha’s comic features become less obvious. The translator carefully reproduces the poetic and picturesque monologues of Katerina in the first few scenes of the play, but with the development of the conflict, he shortens the lyric fragments, changes the tone of the lines and thus creates a more resolute and strong character. The Chinese translator’s understanding and reconstruction of the female characters in Ostrovsky’s play are influenced by the linguistic features of the original work, Chinese cultural traditions and the necessity of adapting texts for stage performances. The interpretation of Katerina’s image is influenced by N. A. Dobrolyubov’s interpretation of her figure and the history and literary situation of China, which needed strong and active protagonists in artistic works.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology.
