I. Dal's ‘Proverbs of the Russian People’. The article identifies various characteristics of the animal (appearance, behavioral traits, human-dog relationships, comparison of dogs with other animals, etc.) that served as sources for folk sayings about dogs. It conducts a lexical-semantic and quantitative analysis of animal nominations, interprets the literal and metaphorical meanings of proverbs. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the reconstruction of the mid-19th-century image of the dog based on proverbial texts, including previously unstudied riddles, reflecting the perception of the animal in the collective consciousness of the Russian people. Dog features are classified into three aspects: 1) the dog as a domestic animal; 2) the dog and humans; 3) the dog and other animals. Proverbial units are interpreted as cognitive structures containing condensed information about the phenomenon of reality. The study proves that the linguo-cognitive interpretation of folklore texts of small genres allows for the reconstruction of a relatively complete image of the dog as a specific fragment of the Russian linguistic worldview.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The paper examines ways of expressing patriotic rhetoric taking into account the multi-variant and multilingual nature of the audience of English-language media information. The scientific novelty of the study is related to posing a problem potentially significant for comparative rhetoric when contrasting the PRC’s patriotic rhetoric in Chinese and in English. The results show that patriotic rhetoric in Chinese media in the English language differs in axiological, conceptual, and cultural specificity. The axiology of argumentative rhetoric is based on historically conditioned civilizational axioms and contemporary ideological concepts of China. The specificity of rhetorical strategies reflects deep civilizational values of collectivism, cyclical time perception, justice as a result of historical changes. The verbal realization of the macro-strategy in English-language Chinese media is influenced by historical and cultural traditions of speech behavior and features of Chinese communicative style. Explicit and implicit rhetorical formulas are realized through linguistic and discursive-pragmatic means.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time, with the involvement of the Kabardian language, a comparative analysis of the conceptualization of kinship and kinship relations in the worldviews of the languages under consideration was carried out. As a result of the study, similarities and differences were identified in the principles of understanding kinship created on the basis of the presence of common immediate ancestors (kinship by blood), as well as established as a result of marital family relations (kinship by marriage). It was revealed that in the Russian and English linguistic consciousness, kinship is conceptualized broadly, according to which the general terms designating this category (cf. ‘родство’ и ‘kinship’) simultaneously serve to nominate kinship by blood and marriage. Moreover, it was found that in the Kabardian language, there is no general term that conceptually correlates with Russian and English units, both as scientific and everyday terms. Instead, the Kabardian language has two specific terms denoting kinship by blood and marriage, respectively.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. Nabokov as a novelist during the Berlin period of his creative development. The paper proceeds from the obvious fact that the Russian writer utilized narratives widely used in the preceding literary practice, which the author elaborates to create his world picture enriched with new content. The first two of his novels, “Mary” and “King, Queen, Knave”, are constructed this way: one can easily recognize plots based on the motifs of unrequited love and adultery. However, regarding the subsequent novel “The Luzhin Defense”, a similar connection with the preceding literary tradition is not established. The proposed concept of the genre identity of this novel, coupled with its narrative features, adds some clarifications to its understanding. The study is original in that it is the first to reveal the causal and semantic correlation of V. Nabokov’s third novel with the European Bildungsroman. The underlying world model proved historically exceptionally productive. It is this model that the first-wave Russian émigré writer builds on. The result of the study amounts to the identification of the principles of artistic world-modeling underlying the literary strategy of V. Nabokov as a novelist during the Berlin period of his creative evolution.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The paper discusses the structure and lexical-semantic content of skaldic kennings and the peculiarities of their usage, comparing them with existing tropes such as metaphor, metonymy, and phraseological units. Additionally, focusing on the lexico-semantic group “Fire”, the authors examine the origin and principles of building horizontal links in the system of kennings. The scientific novelty lies in introducing a new approach to describing kennings within the theory of phraseology, offering a fresh perspective on horizontal links in the system of kennings. This has led to the following findings: 1) kennings can be considered within the phraseological paradigm using theoretical models of phraseology; 2) there are complex horizontal links in the system of kennings, primarily consisting of skaldic heiti, combining both two-word kennings and kennings with multiple elements.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The paper examines the functioning characteristics of the textmental categories of sacral-religious analysis and sacral-religious interpretation. The scientific novelty of the research lies in identifying the expression features of sacral-religious analysis and sacral-religious interpretation processes in a comparative aspect within the text of the Gospel parable using the material in German and Russian. The research findings indicate that sacral-religious analysis, being the explication of the understanding process through referential multiplication, reveals the images and symbols of the Gospel parable drawn from everyday life, which are perceived as doctrinal truths and wise teachings. Sacral-religious interpretation through metaxyvization specifies the distinctive perspective images in the text of the Gospel parable generated by points of view as its spiritual idea. Serving as an embodiment of reflective contemplation (theatation), sacral-religious interpretation of the Gospel parable transcends the framework of the presented worldly vision and translates it to a transcendental level.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. V. Izmailov, P. I. Shalikov and P. I. Sumarokov as an example) in the context of the paradigm “social – cultural – artistic time”. The aim of the research is to substantiate the thesis about the image of time as a characteristic of the way the subject perceives a certain event / chain of events in quasi-historical retrospect, in connection with which three levels of perceptual time (time of the subject / personal time; historical time, idyllic time) were identified and defined. The scientific novelty lies in determining the ways of expressing these components in the travelogues of “mass sentimentalism”, which have not been studied in this aspect before, adding to the ideas about the specifics of the literary process in Russia at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, including the explication of temporal representations in travel prose. It is concluded that the image of the epoch in the travels of “mass sentimentalism” is reconstructed on the basis of spatial impressions. The core of the temporal-image structure is personal time (in the dynamics of private impressions, including accurately recorded ones), while the system of images of various historical epochs (from Kievan Rus’ to the 18th century) and variant idyllic constructions form the periphery.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. The article explores the notion of compression, focusing on the most common means of compression in the form of English compound words and abbreviations at the derivational level. The scientific novelty lies in the comprehensive analysis of means of compressive word formation in English legal discourse, which allowed for the identification and description of productive derivational patterns based on extensive linguistic material, defining the uniqueness of their structure and semantics. The analysis reveals that compound words are the most common means of compression, enabling linguistic economy. Predominant are compound words based on the ‘N + N’ asyntactic model; phrasal compounds with nominal and verbal stem components; derivative compounds created following the agentive model ‘N + V + -er’. Among abbreviations with highly compressive forms of expression, initialisms dominate, based on two-word and three-word nominal models of word formation, as well as syllabic abbreviations retaining the initial part of the original word and hybrid abbreviations formed by contraction.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology. Wells’s short story “The Door in the Wall” that have not been subjected to linguistic analysis. The aim of the research is to identify the peculiarities characterizing representation of the epistemic category of seemingness in an English short story (novella) as a genre of literature. The scientific originality of the research lies in describing the specific features of the category of seemingness in the novella and revealing its essential significance in the plot-building structure. The research findings showed that the language means indicating the seeming modus are used in utterances intrinsically connected with the major plot-building event ‒ the protagonist’s casual entry to a world of beautiful unreality of a wonderful garden. The study defined a significant role played by the modal category of seemingness in the contexts inherently connected with the conflict that underlies the protagonist’s contrasting views of ordinary reality and a wonderful paradise of unreality. The results showed that the modus of seemingness in the novella considered is inseparable from evaluation, perception and the modus-dictum organization (in Ch. Bally’s terms) of an utterance. The essential role of the category of seemingness in the novella is preconditioned by the first-person narration, presenting the plot events through a prismatic view as unverified and seemingly indefinite.","PeriodicalId":508324,"journal":{"name":"Philology.
