{"title":"The Pragmatic Motivation of Atypical English Way into/to Construction","authors":"Yuting Gu, Ying Huang","doi":"10.22158/eltls.v6n2p129","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/eltls.v6n2p129","url":null,"abstract":"The English way construction exhibits distinct constructional meaning and semantic features; however, the prepositional slot in this construction has not received sufficient attention, and there remains a lack of comparative research regarding different prepositions in this field. This study set out to examine the semantic classification, mapping features, cognitive factors in the subcategory English way into/to construction, and to improve the algorithm of ΔPratio. The research adopted a bottom-up corpus-driven approach based on the BNC and used HAC (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) to explore the semantic categories of the verb collexemes and compare the lexical richness in these two constructions. The results revealed that at the level of linguistic structure, coercion and metaphor, as well as family resemblance, served as legitimization methods for verb entry into the construction, while the principles of economy and expressivity disclosed the intentions and motivations behind the semantic extensions of constructions at the pragmatic level. Subtitle translation, which has been sublimated from an obstacle between cultures to a convenient tool, can restore the effects of art in movies and television programs, and extend the meaning within the works to facilitate cultural dissemination. In this sense, different meanings within movies as well as cultural background and character features have to be translated. This article intends to summarize the functional equivalence theory, and base the analysis of translation skills and characteristics in the movie Green Book on the theory. Through further consideration for the relationship between the theory and the practice, the research questions of how lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence function and cooperate with one another are to be fully investigated. As the first chapter of Zhuangzi, A Happy Excursion can be regarded as representative of Zhuangzi both in terms of thought and artistry; it contains rich wisdom of classical Chinese philosophy. Employing a survey-based research methodology, the study collects data from a representative sample of students, with a primary focus on identifying the key difficulties experienced during ESP vocabulary acquisition. The findings reveal significant obstacles in the process, including limited exposure to ESP terminology, difficulties in comprehending and retaining specialized terms, as well as a lack of practical application opportunities. These results emphasize the critical need for tailored teaching strategies and resources to enhance ESP vocabulary learning for non-English majors. {"title":"A Corpus-based Study on Concessive Clauses Used in English Writing by Chinese Senior High School Students","authors":"Haoran Xu","doi":"10.22158/eltls.v6n1p67","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/eltls.v6n1p67","url":null,"abstract":"This paper is designed to reveal the characteristics and figure out the errors in Chinese senior high students’ construction of concessive clause. The study uses data from Chinese Learner English Corpus (CLEC) and a collection of concessive clauses from 499 English compositions written by senior two students in a key public high school in Beijing. The result shows that the construction of concessive clauses exhibits certain characteristics: (1) employing a wide range of linking words, “although” being the most frequently used concessive conjunction, which differs from the use of linking words in St2 from CLEC; (2) having a tendency to place the subordinate clause before the matrix and to construct the concessive clause as “Subject + Linking Verb + Predicate”. Fifty-seven errors are identified in 132 concessive clauses, including: (1) errors of linking words; (2) the wrong matrix-subordinate clause relationship; (3) errors such as choosing the wrong linking words, inconsistent tense between the matrix and subordinate clauses, errors within the clauses, and incorrect use of punctuation. The research incorporated three well-known songs performed by renowned artists, which were readily available on YouTube. A pretest-posttest control-group design was employed, wherein the treatment group (consisting of 28 participants) received English conversation lessons accompanied, in part, by English songs, while the control group (comprising 25 individuals) underwent conventional teaching methods devoid of video clips. The study spanned three consecutive regular sessions, with approximately the final 25 minutes of each session dedicated to this experimental approach. Both groups were subjected to a 30-item English vocabulary assessment created by the researcher, encompassing words drawn from the song lyrics, both before and after the instructional intervention. A statistical independent samples T-test was employed to analyze the data, revealing a significant increase in scores for the treatment group.
