K.","doi":"10.22158/eltls.v5n4p136","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/eltls.v5n4p136","url":null,"abstract":"This study’s objective is to evaluate whether or not there is a correlation between students’ command of the English language and their analytical prowess with regard to written material. Through quantitative and qualitative study on students with varied degrees of linguistic proficiency, it has been found that an increase in one’s level of linguistic competence is strongly and favorably associated with an increase in one’s ability for textual analysis. This discovery was made on students with varying levels of linguistic proficiency. Learners who have a higher degree of language competency are able to more effectively absorb vocabulary, grammatical structure, and logical links in the discourse when reading and interpreting English texts. This is because they have a better understanding of the English language. As a consequence of this, they are capable of performing text analysis in a manner that is both more effective and more accurate than before. This article’s goal is to give instructional strategies for learners of all language levels in order to optimize the process of strengthening those learners’ ability to evaluate texts. The target audience for this article is learners of all language levels. When these strategies are utilized, educators will be provided with practical recommendations that will assist them in more effectively directing students toward mastery of the basic text analysis skills. The outcomes of this study may, in some way, have an impact on the educational practice of teaching English as a second language.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135344302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By interpreting hedging, abstract concepts and generalizations in the address, the author explores how vague language is strategically utilized by political leaders to achieve his political purposes, such as establishing unity and inclusivity, alluding to past grievances, and promising change, eliciting emotional reactions, allowing flexibility, and calling attention to threats. The findings of this analysis enhance our comprehension of the inaugural address given by the former US president, while also providing valuable insights into the language strategies utilized by politicians in political discourses.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135536914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How to translate classical Chinese works not only comprehensively and precisely, but also easy for people who without cultural background to understand is becoming a heated problem. The affluent and high-valued minds in Lunyu almost ranks to the top among ancient Chinese works, and language in it is concise, advocating using a few words to express propounding thought. Therefore, fuzziness becomes one of its typical characteristics, however, the related research about translation strategies, reasons why translating in that way, and effects on it are lacking. This paper will under the direction of theories of fuzzy language and cultural context, picking representative instances mainly from Gu Hongming’s translation version to make a brief analysis. It comes out that main translation strategies are noting, paraphrasing, expounding, and omitting. Plus, reasons resulting in fuzziness will be illustrated, such as original characteristics of language itself,writing style, different culture backgrounds and so on. Moreover, it owns both benefits and drawbacks, such as providing more possibilities for translators to translate in the way which they believe is the best but there still have so much disputation among different versions. The aim of this thesis is through the deliberate statement, giving a little enlightenment towards other Chinese traditional works’ translation, especially fuzziness’s translation.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"177 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135060537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

English textbooks, as one of the vital elements in English teaching, are the main vehicle for transmitting English disciplinary knowledge, and the essential medium for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. In fact, the values are often not directly presented in textbooks but are “hidden” in vehicles such as figures and storylines constructed by complex multimodal symbols (Feng, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to explore the images of figures and their values in Chinese English textbooks. This study takes one version of Chinese senior high school English textbooks published by BNUP in 2019 as the research objects. Based on the data collection and thorough analysis, the results show that Chinese senior high school English textbooks published by BNUP emphasize the moral education of students, and the selection of role models is relatively reasonable. Nevertheless, several shortcomings still exist, such as the unbalanced selection of role models in terms of gender and age.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135825452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
