Its basic theory includes the four principles of verbal communication. The cooperative principle is the specific requirement of the theory of conversational implicature. Geoffrey Leech put forward the politeness principle to complement the cooperative principle. The cooperative principle and the politeness principle play an important role in people's communication. In the process of generating and understanding discourse, both parties in the conversation need to use them flexibly. This study selects the classic dialogues in the novel Besieged City as the text, and tries to analyse the conversational implicature arising from the violation of the principles of cooperation and politeness. It is found that conversational implicature can produce certain literary effects in literary works, and the successful achievement of conversational effect needs the comprehensive support of context, cooperation between both parties in the conversation, and social and cultural environment.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"25 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adopting questionnaire and interview methods, the study followed up more than 400 high school students by name within one month. After analyzing 321 valid questionnaires by SPSS 23.0 and interviewing 6 students, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Senior high school students’ cultural identity with traditional Chinese culture was higher than that with Western culture, and most of students had a neutral attitude towards English learning. (2) There was a significantly negative correlation between senior high school students’ traditional Chinese cultural identity and English learning motivation, but there was a significantly positive correlation between western cultural identity and English learning motivation. (3) The differences between Chinese and western cultural identity of senior high school students only occurred in gender, but students’ English learning motivation differed in gender and major. The results of the study will contribute to understanding the current situation of senior high school students’ traditional Chinese and western cultural identity and the relationship between cultural identity and English learning motivation, exerting the educational value of the English subject in the Chinese context, and providing implications for how to cultivate senior high school students’ cultural awareness and enhance their cultural confidence in a multicultural context.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"1 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140654139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The former symbolizes the equally important roles of reformers and radicals in inspiring intellectual progress and constructing social memory, while the latter signifies the breaking of conventions and the empowerment of those pushed to the margins by patriarchal and white supremacist Britain, both of which complement each other in constructing a historical space dominated by the collective authority of black women in Britain. With the increasing number of linguistic terms, the translation of terms is bound to be inconsistent and even chaotic. Based on an overview of the characteristics of linguistic terms and their translation bottlenecks, the translation and clarity of linguistic terms are crucial in interpreting complex linguistic theories. Therefore, it is imperative to explore, identify and correct the translation of linguistic terms and put forward the feasible ways of translation. As far as the translation of linguistic terms is concerned, hermeneutic theory is operable in this application, and many problems in the translation of linguistic terms can be reasonably explained and caused by hermeneutic theory. Based on the translation practice of linguistic terms, this paper discusses the translation methods of linguistic terms from the perspective of Skopos theory, combining the theoretical research of Skopos theory with the author’s translation practice.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140660414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As cognitive linguistics advances, it has become apparent that metaphor and metonymy are not merely poetic embellishments for language. Rather, they constitute a mode of thought and a form of cognition, by which we gain comprehension of new concepts. Due to the fact that the head is the most significant portion of the human body, it is frequently used in linguistic expressions. This study adopts qualitative descriptive study through the framework of prototype theory, metaphor, metonymy, and iconicity to make an analysis of the polysemous Chinese character “头” (head), which contributes to our understanding of the intricate interplay between language, cognition, and cultural associations.","PeriodicalId":483980,"journal":{"name":"English language teaching and linguistics studies","volume":"40 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140663067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study analyzes the main linguistic manifestations of power asymmetries in the language of a civil judgment and investigates how the power relations among different participants are shown in the social court context. It is found that address forms, formal words, nominalization, modality, imperatives and ellipsis are the main linguistic manifestations of power asymmetries among court participants. The interpretation and explanation of the situational court context manifests to a certain extent the encoding power relations, and such social structure of power relations help shape the discourse of judgment, and the discourse itself reinforces the enactment of the power relations. The research adopted a bottom-up corpus-driven approach based on the BNC and used HAC (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) to explore the semantic categories of the verb collexemes and compare the lexical richness in these two constructions. The results revealed that at the level of linguistic structure, coercion and metaphor, as well as family resemblance, served as legitimization methods for verb entry into the construction, while the principles of economy and expressivity disclosed the intentions and motivations behind the semantic extensions of constructions at the pragmatic level.
