The University of Bisha, College of Medicine (UBCOM) adopted self-directed learning (SDL) represented by problem-based learning (PBL), and directed self-learning (DSL) represented by team-based learning (TBL).</p></div><div><h3>Aim</h3><p>To compare the students’ performance in SDL and DSL among UBCOM students.</p></div><div><h3>Methodology</h3><p>A total of 502 multiple choice questions (MCQs) from the mid-course and final exams were collected by the relevant subject experts from nine courses during the period from September 2020 till June 2023 that adopted PBL and TBL; 247 MCQs related to PBL and 255 related to TBL. Psychometric analysis was used to determine difficult, easy, and optimum questions (≤25%, ≥90%, and 26–89%, respectively). Point biserial as &lt;0.19, 0.20–0.29, 0.30–0.39, and &gt;0.40 which indicate poor, marginal, good, and excellent point biserial, respectively. Finally, the number of functional distractors was attempted by &gt;5% of the candidates.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>No significant differences were noted for the students’ performance in MCQs related to PBL (representing self-directed, small group learning tool), and TBL (representing directed-self, large group learning tool) regarding difficulty index (DI), point biserial, and distractors functionality.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>It has been observed that there is no difference in students’ performance whether PBL or TBL is used for learning Basic Medical Science courses. Exercise tests, such as the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), are commonly used to evaluate cardiopulmonary endurance. We investigated the effects of the Gait Real-Time Analysis Interactive Lab (GRAIL)- and corridor-based 6MWTs on functional performance.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Thirty healthy men were randomly divided into two groups. Group A participants performed a corridor-based 6MWT, followed by a washout period (1 h). Subsequently, they performed the GRAIL-based 6MWT. Group B participants performed the tests in the reverse order of that performed by Group A participants.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The corridor-based 6MWT resulted in significantly higher 6MW distance and 6MW speed than the GRAIL-based 6MWT. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in any of the following secondary outcomes: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, dyspnea, and overall fatigue. Aljunaid MDS","doi":"10.1016/j.jtumed.2024.05.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.jtumed.2024.05.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To determine total protein content, antioxidant activity, and protective ability of lyophilized human gingival mesenchymal stem cells (hGMSCs)-secretome in hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) induced oxidative stress model.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Human GMSCs were cultured to obtain a conditioned medium (secretome), then lyophilized to produce lyosecretome. Total protein was determined by bicinchoninic acid assay (BCA) and SDS-PAGE to improve protein measurements. Antioxidant concentration was measured by ABTS assay, while the protective ability of lyosecretome against oxidative stress was determined by the metabolic activity of osteoblast cells. The study group was divided into a control group (culture medium) and a lyosecretome treatment group (0.0; 0.157, 0.313, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/mL + H₂O₂).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Lyosecretome had a protein concentration of 2086.00 ± 0.20 μg/ml, with a molecular weight of 174, 74, 61, 55, and 26 kDa, which are thought to facilitate cell migration, as well as bind cytokines and growth factors. Lyosecretome also provided the highest antioxidant activity of 93.51% at a concentration of 4.8 mg/ml, with an IC₅₀ value of 2.08 mg/ml. The highest cell metabolic activity (79.53 ± 2.41%) was shown in the 1.25 mg/ml lyosecretome treatment group.
