This study aims to explore this phenomenon through the use of a Nasometer by examining several nasal-vowel contexts (NV, VN, and NVN sequences; and with post-vocalic nasals in tautosyllabic or heterosyllabic sequences with reference to the preceding vowel), the distinction between stressed and unstressed syllables containing the target vowel, and three speaking rate conditions (slow, normal, and fast). The utterances produced by three speakers of Standard Peninsular Spanish are analyzed. Results of the percentage of nasality and nasalance indicate that the variables under examination are statistically significant in the process of vowel nasalization, though to a varying extent. A closer look at the different syllable positions in the nasal-vowel relationship addresses the issue of anticipatory vs. carryover coarticulation effects on vowel nasalization.

In linguistics, this subject matter is especially complex, considering the multiplicity of theoretical approaches and the variety of disciplinary fields that address the issue. A similar concern applies to the concept of reference, \u0000because, although most linguists today agree that meaning and reference form two different realities, the discussion about the relation between these two terms has not yet been fully examined. \u0000Cognitive Linguistics has made a great contribution to this discussion by recognizing that we cannot present the postulate of the existence of a level of meaning that belongs only to language and is distinct from the level at which the meaning of linguistic forms is associated \u0000with the knowledge of the world. \u0000The objective of this work is to show that, with Cognitive Linguistics, the ideas of meaning and reference are re-equated and have gained strength in the scope of linguistic studies reinforced by the concept of prototype. For such purpose this text describes the way these concepts have evolved based on their theorisation, paying particular attention to cognitive semantics, but not intending to make an exhaustive theoretical-methodological analysis of them.

EnglishThis paper examines disjunctive and copulative initial coordination in Spanish (o1… o2 ‘either... or’ and ni1... ni2 ‘neither... nor’) with a view to demonstrating that, in contrast to conventional analyses, the former element does not pass the proofs of the coordinating conjunctions. To do so, we will base our proposal on the grammatical patterns observed in a compilation of examples from the “Corpus del Espanol del Siglo XXI” (in particular, from written texts in European Spanish). These patterns allow us to suggest that o1 and ni1 are not coordinators, but focal particles whose scope or dominion is the first conjunct coordinated by o2 or ni.

EnglishThis article focuses on the creation of conceptually-based terminographical resources for managing medical terminology. We present a bilingual (French and Spanish) terminological knowledge base on a large group of rare diseases, namely inborn errors of metabolism. This resource gives its users conceptually structured access to the terminology used when referring to these diseases and their signs and symptoms. After introducing the theoretical framework underpinning its design, we describe the various stages in the creation of the knowledge base itself: compilation, tagging, exploitation of the working corpus and construction of the underlying ontology. We then give an overview of the salient data and provide a guide to the functionalities of the query interface. The purpose of the resource is to describe the sub-domain in question and serve as a source of information for specialist translators.
