El punto de partida de la obra es la presencia de un dolor en el pecho que sume a la narradora en la angustia derivada de la fragilidad y la vulnerabilidad del cuerpo. La necesidad de nombrar el cuerpo se convierte en esta novela en búsqueda incesante por explicitar la experiencia del cambio físico o incluso el deterioro del cuerpo. El dolor y la crisis física y vital que experimenta la narradora proporcionan la excusa para exponer el androcentrismo de la ciencia y la medicina que ha conducido a una excesiva medicalización y patologización del cuerpo femenino. Asimismo, la experiencia traumática de la narradora sirve como motivo para combatir los desajustes genera-dos por el mercado y poder hegemónico así como para expresar el malestar frente a las consecuencias de la crisis económica y social.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"455 - 465"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44949044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Con base en el análisis de cincuenta y siete documentos redactados entre 1567 y 1667, se plantea que, además de su función como instrumento de integración a la sociedad emergente tras la conquista y mecanismo para la protección de la clase indígena subalterna frente a los peligros de despojo material tras la muerte, el testamento fungió además en las etapas tempranas de la colonización como un canal de denuncia y vindicación contra los atropellos sufridos por las nativas americanas en la fase inicial de la conquista. Se expone además que, con el paso del tiempo, la institución testamentaria fue perdiendo su carácter vindicatorio hasta dar paso a un mero instrumento de legación mediado y capturado por la iglesia, para garantizar la transferencia de bienes de mujeres sin descendencia, para su propio beneficio.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"551 - 562"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45778681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book's engagement with popular culture goes beyond references to movies or rock and roll and incorporates comics by pairing most of the poems with comic strips drawn by the Mexican cartoonist Pavel Ortega. For Hillary Chute, the double narrative of word and image in comics demands a double vision, a back-and-forth between reading and looking. English translations accompany most of the poems, as well. Though translated poems are not trans-medial, translations also demand a back-and-forth between the original and the translation. Both comics and translation, then, are texts with double vision. The book, thus, embeds the poems within a set of mirrors, an intertextual play that is both trans-medial and trans-lingual. Correa-Díaz exploits this double vision throughout the book in other ways as well: among these, he uses irony, puns, and other forms of doubling. The formal and structural double vision of comics, translation, puns, and etc. reinforce the thematic double vision at the heart of Americana-lcd, namely that of the yes/no, or yes/but of the immigrant experience. In this way, Correa-Díaz is able to express love for two countries. In fact, this double vision lets him both praise and blame his adopted country.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"407 - 418"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49187703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Los casos investigados son Toledo y Madrid en la corona castellana y Lisboa en la portuguesa. Éstos se desarrollan tras una introducción en la ausencia real e importancia de la presencia del monarca, por una parte, y, por otra, en la centralidad como excelencia, valor antiguo recuperado por los humanistas del Renacimiento. Se mostrará cómo cambia el marco referencia, geográfico y estratégico para argumentar una centralidad diferente, especialmente en el caso lisboeta frente a los dos castellanos. También se explican las distintas circunstancias históricas que explican en la mayoría de los casos por qué un texto aparece en un momento determinado y no en otro. Los textos analizados se publicaron entre fines del reinado de Carlos V y los años de Felipe IV, lo cual constituye aproximadamente un siglo (1550–1650).","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"491 - 501"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43339028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She constructs the practices associated with the crypto-Jewish faith as consumed in the very first days of life. In this period, breast milk was considered a purified form of blood. Women, through their milk, were the bearers of familial honor as well as both purity and impurity. Breast milk became a tool to control women, and women were keenly aware of the power that their bodies played in their own religious practice and that of their families. Similarly, the seventeenth-century Sephardic ballad La nodriza del infante warns against spoilt milk: \"No le des al niño esa leche consumida.\" As the physical characteristics of milk were considered to transmit moral traits, the spoilt milk being referred to was both biological and moral. \"Esa leche\" was responsible for transmitting both virtues and vices to the child. In this paper, I explore the inquisition manuscripts of Isabel de Baeza alongside the ballad of La nodriza del infante to understand how Sephardic expressions of identity and faith are grounded in breast milk.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"515 - 526"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45172727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One rivalry can be seen in what is effectively an extensive revenge fantasy in verse, the Segunda parte de la Filomena, appearing in 1621 when the collection of La Filomena was published. This lengthy poem is a direct attack against Pedro de Torres Rámila, a grammarian and professor at the University of Alcalá de Henares and a known detractor of Lope and his work. This less-studied poem pits la Filomena (Lope) against a tordo, or thrush (Torres Rámila), in a symbolic contest between two birds. The latter had published the Spongia several years earlier in 1617 to criticize Lope's work. As a result of this, Lope uses this poem to launch a counterattack against Torres Rámila, focusing on intellect, talent, and esthetics. At the same time, this poem serves as a vehicle for self-validation against people Lope would consider outsiders, namely academics and others not directly involved in the writing of poetry. The Segunda parte de la Filomena allows Lope to inhabit a safe space of lyrical fantasy, which further enables him to establish his poetic authority, and to condemn detractors such as Torres Rámila as inferior and, in essence, dishonorable.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"527 - 538"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45273349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fray Gerundio se publicó en Madrid el 21 de febrero de 1758 y fue un éxito rotundo. La reacción de los predicadores fue instantánea y, no queriendo ser tildados de \"Gerundios\", empezaron a predicar sus sermones en un lenguaje más claro y sencillo. Cuatro días después de su publicación, de la Concepción, presentó su denuncia del Gerundio ante el Tribunal de la Inquisición. Isla rebatió la denuncia escribiendo cuatro cartas que se convirtieron en la Apología por la historia de Fray Gerundio. La Apología es una obra típicamente isliana en su retórica combativa. Isla utiliza todos los recursos aprendidos durante su larga carrera literaria, para defender su obra y usa un ataque minucioso para desglosar la totalidad de la denuncia, aunque finalmente fuese en vano, y la novela bestseller del siglo dieciocho fuese prohibida. Una de las claves para entender la Apología reside en el uso de la anfibología por parte de Isla. El double entendre ilumina la Apología como arma ofensiva más que defensiva. Esta obra, como la mayoría de las obras de Isla con la excepción del Gerundio, ha tenido mínima repercusión crítica y académica.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"419 - 429"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44334542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It proposes that Juan Latino alludes and utilizes Heliodorus's Aethiopica, a recently discovered and popular Greek/Byzantine novel, in order to cast himself as a wise, virtuous and eloquent Ethiop and as someone who is well suited to write an epic of the historic battle of Lepanto. He does so through contrastive oppositions. He also affirms Western values and Western art, evincing its presence in Ethiopia. He rejects the universality of the supremacy of one color of skin by underlining the opposing opinion: In the Aethiopica the people in this African kingdom despise white skin. Thus, Juan Latino's epic affirms the relativity of a scale in color by again pointing to the ways kings of Spain and Ethiopia judge whiteness and blackness.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"395 - 405"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42389485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focusing on the point of the view of the unnamed narrator, one of Moncho's childhood friends, this article engages with Freud's and Derrida's theoretical approaches to the work of mourning, ultimately relying on psychologist Pauline Boss's concept of ambiguous loss, which refers to a type of grief without closure. A partir de los imaginarios compartidos y la naturaleza espectral de ambas obras, argumento que Iñárritu asigna una paternidad literaria en la figura de Rulfo, reelaborando en el lenguaje fílmico algunas de sus obsesiones e imágenes literarias. Al exponer su deuda con el escritor, Iñárritu busca no sólo exportar la poética rulfiana en torno al mundo de los muertos, sino también hacerse un lugar como auteur en la escena in ternacional, a la vez que heredero de una tradición narrativa mexicana. Como sostengo en este trabajo, Biutiful rinde homenaje a la universalidad de la obra de Rulfo, trasladando las fantasmagorías del ámbito rural de Comala a la cosmopolita Barcelona del siglo xxi, renovando los códigos del realismo mágico y resignificando algunos matices de la fascinación mexicana por la muerte, para de ese modo narrar el colapso de la sociedad global, asediada por sus propios fantasmas.","PeriodicalId":42940,"journal":{"name":"ROMANCE NOTES","volume":"62 1","pages":"579 - 589"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49216405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
