A hydro dominated system requires an entirely different and expanded definition due to the complex interactions resulting from temporal reservoir operational decisions. In this paper several economic definitions of capacity are presented and analyzed based on the need for this concept in the operation and expansion of hydro dominated systems.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. The developed electricity market pricing methodology have solved the three great difficult market problems in the world. We have also researched the market character of EVE pricing methods using analysis method and the intelligent agent-based method, taking into account the bidding action (Bertrand game) and the withholding capacity action (Cournot game) of participants and comparing with the uniform cleaning pricing (UCP) and pay as bid (PAB) pricing. Besides the market efficiency and the capacity adequate return, the results show that the EVE pricing method can induce the power suppliers bidding according to their true operation cost and without capacity withholding. This is an invaluable, market character. We call it market 'inductivity' which is different from reliability, stability and robustness etc. As we know that there are no such properties for any other pricing methods.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. Physical analysis of post-fault power system including stability measures such as generator tripping and load shedding controls is presented in the sense of NEF. The strategy for TSA using NEF is extended for power systems including stability control measures. TSA results on the power network of Henan province in China are given to validate the effectiveness of the NEF approach in TSA.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. The aim is to optimize the network structure and improve the accuracy of STLF. The realization process consists of three steps. In the first step, the number of hidden nodes of BP-network is calculated by use of GA. In the second step, by use of GA a fittest initial weight value is selected from the solution group of initial weight values to avoid the blindness in the selection of initial weight value. In the third step, combining the structure of the obtained BP-network and the fittest initial weight value, the STLF of power system can be performed by use of improved BP algorithm. Simulation results show that the percentage errors of mostly of 24 h forecasting load are less than 3%, and prove that the approach can meet the need of forecast accuracy and enhance the performance of the network.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. The studied turbine generator set is with the rating of 951 MW, four poles, and operates at 1800 rpm. From the simulation results, it is found the subsynchronous frequency component of the electromagnetic torque (E/M torque) is induced from the dramatic real power fluctuation of an EAF load, which imposes considerable resonant torque on turbine shafts and blades. Such an torsional impact was not alleviated by means of the longer distance between the EAF plant and the power plant, the higher feeding voltage level, and the different local loads.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. Conventional linear analysis cannot account for many complex dynamic behaviors. As recognized by many researchers, the very nature of inter-area phenomena is not well understood and may include nonlinear interaction of the system oscillation modes. This paper presents some advances on the development of normal form method for the analysis of inter-area oscillations in complex power systems. Second-order analysis indicates that more frequencies of oscillation may have significant influence on the system response. This method is used to extend linear concept of participation factor to include 2nd-order modal affects on system dynamic behavior. The analysis and the procedure developed are tested on some IEEE test systems.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. First, the effect of bilateral contracts as a set of new input signals is taken into account in the control area dynamical model, and then the LFC problem will be formulated as a multi-objective problem to cover robust performance, practical constraint on control action and minimize the effects of load disturbance under wide range of demand changes. A mixed H/sub 2//H/sub /spl infin// is used to solve the problem and design the desired robust controllers. A three-control areas power system example with possible contract scenarios and load changes is given to illustrate the proposed approach. The resulting controllers are shown to minimize the effect of disturbances and maintain the robust performance.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. A scenario technique is used in order to model nonrandom uncertainties. Drawbacks of criteria of scenario technique are pointed out and new criteria are presented for risk assessment. A probabilistic tool is presented for assessing electric markets with random uncertainties. To measure how much a transmission plan improves competition a market based criterion is introduced. The final plan is selected using fuzzy risk assessment. The approach is applied to IEEE 30 bus network. The results are compared with conventional risk assessment to demonstrate that fuzzy risk assessment overcomes the shortcomings of conventional risk assessment method.","PeriodicalId":427228,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies.
