Los sampleos dotan de significación específica a temas con o sin letra; vinculan el nuevo tango con los sonidos, voces y grabaciones del tango clásico; orientan políticamente el mensaje de las bandas colaborando a construir su imagen pública; y se articulan con otros recursos para propiciar mecanismos específicos de interpelación identitaria. En este trabajo se analizan casos específicos de utilización de sampleo para detectar sus modos de operación, sus significados para músicos y público, y se mapean sus estrategias de interpelación así como las narrativas identitarias que se detonan, fortifican o eluden por medio de éstos.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"228 - 259"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35203","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers have documented the banda’s displacement of traditional ensembles and shown how its dissemination has been a source of tension, while others have argued that the ensemble represents an element of change that is grounded in tradition. I assess the cultural positioning of the banda in the central Andes of Peru from the perspective of musicians’ statements regarding their repertoire and claims of versatility, and through the imagery used in promotional materials. I evaluate how the music performed at patron-saint fiestas fits with articulated categories such as central Andean folclor, the music of Peru, and foreign genres. Considering the region’s strong sense of identity and openness to outside influences, I illustrate how the banda mediates between different cultural positions.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"260 - 288"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35204","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In focusing on his works from the late 1960s and early 1970s, my intention is to show how this cosmopolitan ideal informed Lavista’s compositional decisions and how it played a role in the establishment of his public persona.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"169 - 196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35201","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this article analyzes the changes in tango music as a consequence of the intervention of several discourses that promoted regulation of the experience. The proposal tries to explain how the tango became a key element of Argentine popular culture and its contribution to the production and reproduction of social relationships.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"25 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the phenomenon has attracted scholarly attention, the role of music in the trajectories and transformations of this telenovela has largely been overlooked. Yet the soundtrack design and music were fundamental elements at the core of Betty’s successful worldwide circulation. The series’ soundtrack—its opening theme, source music, and popular songs—was mobilized in Yo soy Betty, la fea and in its manifold adaptations to habilitate the international circulation and local adaptation of the series, to address local audiences, to fashion the basic plot, to define the series’ aesthetics, and to adjust Betty’s ugliness-otherness to the different sociocultural realities and media contexts in which it was produced and consumed. Popular songs also participated in the promotion and commercialization of the series while extending the telenovela’s world beyond its televisual context.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"1 - 24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35101","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the 1910s and 1920s music altered cinema’s functionality. It shifted from the role of enlivening cinematic spectacles to a more complex one in which the challenge was synchronizing the content of images with appropriate music. The analysis here makes clear that this was part of a global phenomenon that included Chile. This becomes evident through analysis of Erno Rapée’s 1924 compilation that synthesized cinematic musical practices that are possible to trace not just in the United States but in different Chilean cities.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"56 1","pages":"114 - 88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35104","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The celebration culminates in Carnavalesque processions in which masked characters and devotees parade the image of the saint to bomba, calypso, merengue, and calypso music. As with many folk Catholic rituals, devotion to Santiago (St. James) is expressed through both the religious and profane, which often makes it hard to distinguish one from the other. This article demonstrates the active role that music plays in the formation of public spaces where the juxtaposition of the religious and profane creates a framework for the performance of the fiesta.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"35 1","pages":"115-138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR35105","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Villa-Lobos implemented a program of music education in schools that sought to promote discipline among children while socializing them and educating them about aspects of the ethnic and socio-cultural formation of Brazilian people. Although Villa-Lobos had sketched his program of music education with ostensibly purely educational intentions, Vargas appropriated Villa-Lobos’s program and used it as a tool to homogenize the government’s nationalistic ideologies among children. This article demonstrates that, despite Villa-Lobos’s original educational intentions, he increasingly aligned his program with the government’s nationalistic ideologies and consciously instilled these ideologies in the minds of children, becoming, in essence, an indoctrinator of the regime.","PeriodicalId":41979,"journal":{"name":"LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC REVIEW-REVISTA DE MUSICA LATINOAMERICANA","volume":"34 1","pages":"162 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2013-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.7560/LAMR34202","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71339005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
