El arte de adecentar los sonidos: Huellas de las operaciones de normalización del tango argentino, 1900–1920

Abstract

Current academic interpretations of the process of transformation within tango music and dance during the first two decades of the twentieth century focus on the consolidation of a canon concerning poetical and body issues, leaving open the question about the stylistic changes in music, and its connection to the social conditions of its production. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this article analyzes the changes in tango music as a consequence of the intervention of several discourses that promoted regulation of the experience. The proposal tries to explain how the tango became a key element of Argentine popular culture and its contribution to the production and reproduction of social relationships.
