Our attempt to study in detail the various determinants of sensemaking of technology has identified three important factors (1) user competency (2) expectancies (3) attitude towards learning, that affect the technological frames of the users. The influence of these factors in the sensemaking process has been tested using an empirical study of 505 students from 10 secondary schools of Singapore in adopting an e-learning technology.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. Two interesting results are presented. First, we observe that mutual-choice social networks show obvious cluster phenomenon, which are different from one-sided relations shown in original graphs. Mutual-choice relationships require bilateral content of two involved agents; therefore similarity (e.g. the period in the firm) between members partly increases the likelihood of forming the links within the groups. A second finding presents that the amount of mutual-choice networks reduces sharply when knowledge benefits develop from single-loop to double-loop level. High requirements of maintaining relationships for double-loop benefits may limit the quantity, but improve the quality of links. The research contributes to theory on knowledge management and social network analysis by investigating symmetric dyadic relationships of knowledge sharing","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. We divide the producing cost into the variable cost and fixed cost. And design three cases: after the scale is expanded, fixed cost holds the line, variable cost holds the line, or both the fixed cost and the variable cost become lower averagely. We give the basic conditions and the method of optimal decision making for expending production scales under those three cases. The method in this paper is widespread suitable for all kinds of expanding the production scales. Two examples show, by the method, not only we can resolve the problems of expanding the general merchandise production scale, but also solve the problems of expanding scale of stock capitals.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. It is the second largest sector providing employment after agriculture. India's contribution to production of cotton textiles in the world has increased to 15% from 12% in a decade. However, growth of the textile industry has been stunted by technological obsolescence, fragmented structure, low productivity and low end quality products. The structure of the industry is varied and deep-rooted and its reformation is daunting task. Stagnation in demand, inability to expand, inadequate working capital, increased cost of input, with highly contaminated cotton has deepened the crises. Hence, Indian textiles are getting squeezed out of the global scene. It is largely unseen, with the decentralised powerloom and handloom sectors accounting for the bulk of textile industries. The paper discusses about the status of handloom & powerloom industry in the region, which has about 22,000 handlooms and 6,000 powerlooms and are major contributors of economy of Karnataka state in India. It probes into the operational management of handloom sectors and identifies the issues for effective strategic management.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. So long, the chain of movement of the product from the manufacturer to the customer is by rules of thumb and years of experience, SCM gives a ready referendum whereby entrepreneurs competing globally can streamline their businesses so as to deliver the right product, at the right time, place, cost and quality. Can such a system exist successfully in developing countries like India? SCM is in the process of being refined to the point where the customer gets what he demands, when he demands and wherever he demands it. With changing times, it is now an environment of \"Survival of the Fastest\". In Indian conditions and similar conditions in some other, parts of the globe, the topographical and geographical constraints along with cultural diversity of the people dictate the terms that are involved with upstream and downstream linkages. This affects the different processes and activities that produce value in the form of products and services in the hands of the ultimate consumer. This paper presents an approach suitable for Indian conditions to resolve issues in customer service, demand flow, distribution and supply.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. To date, they still play a significant role in economies of many countries, especially Thailand. Ruby, the red gemstone, one of the best known gemstones to ordinary people, is the focus of this study. Previous studies have shed the light on examinations of the characteristics and production methods of ruby. However, none has studied the attitudes of gemstone distributors toward several treatment strategies, which aiming to add value to ruby and maximize the return from the limited ruby supplies. The prime purpose of this study is to identify the value adding strategies deemed acceptable to gemstone distributors, by comparing their levels of satisfaction toward each treatment strategy. The findings reveal gemstone distributors accept that other methods in addition to normal cutting and polishing can also add value to rubies. Analyses of sample t-test and one-way repeated measures ANOVA suggest two treatment strategies of ruby production are deemed acceptable to gemstone distributors, and that the satisfaction levels of gemstone distributors toward each of the five treatment strategies are significantly different. Gemstone distributors consider heat treatment strategy as the most satisfactory strategy in adding value to rubies.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. Industries using techniques naturally expect return from techniques implementation by use those techniques efficiently and lead to gain greater result in competitive advantage. The knowledge of each technique requires appropriate knowledge transferring among workers in organizations. The study of knowledge transfer confirms of its support to business success. Past and present studies have focused on factors for knowledge transfer. The objective of this study is to investigate relationships between sharing knowledge of production management techniques and their performance result. The paper proposed study framework of knowledge transfer of techniques in each group which industries used. The effects of four contexts of knowledge transfer will be studies and assessed to fit each groups of production management techniques. The paper reported the production management techniques being used currently in Thai industries. The survey illustrates industries information, techniques and results by each techniques group. The knowledge of techniques are relevant and needed to be manage properly for continuous improvement and learning and sustain competitive advantage and success. The result of this study framework can be applied for management in organizations to create the appropriate knowledge transferring which will support using each type of operational management techniques in the company. The result also assists in decision making of suitable choice of techniques which each organization wants to use. Finally, industries will gain sustainable success result.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat. Two relevant sources of opportunities for technology firms are considered in This work namely the customer and technology. In the context of Singapore, where her indigenous technology firms are considered to be latecomers, four possible firm types are suggested namely, evolvers, pioneers, specialists and disruptors. Further, it is offered that each of these firm types would correspond to varying strategic orientations i.e. customer orientation and/or technology orientation which reflects the firms' preference towards the source of opportunity to pursue. Based on the firm's adopted strategic orientation, This work proposes that the firm's corporate entrepreneurial behavior measured using the entrepreneurial orientation construct would vary. The implication of MNCs as both customers and technology source on corporate entrepreneurial behavior of latecomer technology firms is also highlighted.","PeriodicalId":412957,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conference (IEEE Cat.
