Meddeb interroge, dans sa dimension plurielle, érudite et surtout complexe, la possibilité d’un renouveau de l’interprétation du texte sacré en islam. L’écriture poétique de Meddeb serait ainsi la mise en pratique d’une nouvelle herméneutique, postcoloniale, rappelant les généalogies ouvertement plurielles de l’acte poétique dont dérive le texte coranique. L’idéologisation du corpus islamique et la tragédie humaine qui en résulte ont forcé l’auteur à sortir de sa réserve de penseur et d’écrivain pour soudainement se saisir du combat contre l’hydre religieux solidement amarré au discours nationaliste et panarabe. Notre contribution cherchera à montrer dans le travail transpoétique de Meddeb un modèle d’herméneutique comparée à transférer au texte sacré. L’analyse de la poésie de Meddeb fait ressurgir l’importance du signifiant, rappelant la trajectoire du signe dans le texte coranique qui participe du souffle et du sens, une autre forme de tarjama ou « traduction ».Abstract:Abdelwahab Meddeb’s œuvre questions, through its plurality, erudition and complexity, the possibility of renewing the interpretation of the sacred text in Islam. Meddeb’s poetical writing is perceived as the performative space for the experience of new postcolonial hermeneutics reminding us of the overtly open and plural genealogies from which the Quranic text derives. The ideologization of the Islamic corpus and its tragic human consequences pushed Meddeb as a thinker and a writer to address the religious hydra forcefully attached to nationalist and pan-Arab discourse. Our contribution explores Meddeb’s transpoetic writing as a model of comparative hermeneutics to be possibly transferred to the interpretation of the sacred text. Through the analysis of Meddeb’s writings emerges the centrality of the signifier, reminding us of the trajectory of the sign in the Quranic text as correlated to the breath and the meaning, another form of tarjama or “translation”.","PeriodicalId":41074,"journal":{"name":"Expressions maghrebines","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/exp.2020.0018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49505535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In light of the novel’s explicit intertextual gestures to Georges Bataille, I argue that Bataille’s theory of community sheds light on both the meaning and import of this revolt. Community, for Bataille, refers to an experience of unselving; this theory emerges in part out of Bataille’s readings of Christian mystics such as St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross. In the same way, the revolutionary community that Meddeb depicts in Talismano is predicated upon an experience of mystical annihilation inherent to Sufism. Yet where Bataille deploys his ideas about community in opposition to European political ideologies of the 1930s and 40s, the revolutionary community of Talismano is positioned against the dominant contemporary ideologies of the Arab world – namely, arabité, fundamentalist Islam, and militant secularism. I argue that Talismano resurrects and rethinks Bataille’s political ethos for the postcolonial Maghreb, while situating Bataille’s modernist ideas in the longue durée of Sufism.Abstract:Talismano, d’Abdelwahab Meddeb (1979 [1987]) met en scène une révolte à Tunis dans l’ère postcoloniale qui est autant carnavalesque que politique. Vu les allusions intertextuelles que Talismano fait à Georges Bataille, je soutiens que la théorie de « communauté » de ce penseur moderniste illumine tant l’importance que le sens de cette révolte. Pour Bataille, l’idée de communauté dénote une expérience d’anéantissement du soi ; cette théorie tire son origine en partie de ses lectures des mystiques chrétiens tels que sainte Thérèse et saint Jean de la Croix. Quant à Meddeb, la communauté révolutionnaire qu’il dépeint dans Talismano se base sur une expérience d’annihilation mystique intrinsèque au soufisme. Pourtant, alors que Bataille déploie ses idées de communauté contre les idéologies politiques européennes des années trente et quarante, la communauté révolutionnaire de Talismano se positionne contre les idéologies dominantes contemporaines du monde arabe, surtout l’arabité, l’islamisme et la laïcité militaire. Je soutiens que Talismano ressuscite et repense l’esprit politique de Bataille pour le Maghreb postcolonial, en même temps qu’il situe les idées modernistes de Bataille dans la longue durée du soufisme.","PeriodicalId":41074,"journal":{"name":"Expressions maghrebines","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/exp.2020.0014","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49036499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Les Revenants, poètes, philosophes, peintres, musiciens, impressionnent le poète dans son exil, le déconstruisent et le refaçonnent selon une perception singulière, car au plus près de la vie quotidienne, ce qui entre dans l’expérience du Revenant, c’est la vision intempestive qui attise l’imaginaire au jour le jour. À la faveur des tensions internationales et des conflits de civilisations, la problématique se renouvelle, donne de la voix et offre au poète le pouvoir de nommer et d’écrire de manière plus lapidaire. Sur la question islamique et face à un vécu radical des identités, Pari de civilisation est sans doute son ouvrage le plus abouti. Il est extraordinairement d’actualité au moment où les tensions s’exacerbent de manière inquiétante chez les analystes, dans les sphères médiatiques et politiques. C’est grâce à la logique des Revenants, à sa solidarité diachronique, synchronique et téléologique qui réactive le temps et exacerbe la vision, qu’une telle œuvre a été possible : à la fois poétique et éminemment « cosmopolitique ». Le poète y a mis toute sa foi.Abstract:Meddeb's work was conceived between the Poem of an Ancient Memory, that brings out the spirit of the great disappeared, and polymorphic expressions related to its confrontation with historical tragedies. The Revenants, poets, philosophers, painters, musicians, impress the poet in his exile, deconstruct him, and reshape him according to a singular perception, because as close as possible to daily life, what enters into the experience of the Revenant is the untimely vision that stirs the imagination from day to day. Thanks to international tensions and conflicts of civilizations, the problem is renewed, gives voice and offers the poet the power to name and write in a more lapidary way. On the Islamic question and in the face of a radical experience of identities, Pari de civilisation is probably his most accomplished work. It is extraordinarily topical at a time when tensions are rising alarmingly among analysts, in the media and political spheres. It is thanks to the logic of the Revenants, to its diachronic, synchronic, and teleological solidarity that reactivates time and exacerbates vision, that such a work has been possible: both poetic and eminently “cosmopolitical”. The poet put all his faith into it.","PeriodicalId":41074,"journal":{"name":"Expressions maghrebines","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/exp.2020.0012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49146094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ainsi évoque-t-il d’abord, à partir de la figure du tarjuman, la singularité de sa méthode, fondée sur une poétique de l’interprétation des traces, par quoi le lecteur, devenu passeur et créateur de sens, cherche à révéler l’enfoui et ouvre le texte à la métaphysique. Il rappelle cependant que cette vocation interprétative du poète tarjuman repose sur certains principes herméneutiques et notamment sur une circulation entre les références constitutives du texte palimpseste. Interculturelle, cette circulation implique également de fouiller dans les strates des temps et des histoires afin de faire advenir un sens toujours actualisé. L’article interroge alors cette méthode par laquelle Abdelwahab Meddeb se faisait aussi « archéologue du contemporain ».Abstract:Intertwining the souvenir of Abdelwahab Meddeb’s teaching at the University of Nanterre and the reading of his œuvre, this article attempts to identify the poet’s legacy to his former students. It thus first evokes, from the figure of the tarjuman, the singularity of his method, rooted in a poetic interpretation of traces, whereby the reader, both cultural interpreter and creator of meaning, seeks to reveal what has been buried and opens the text to metaphysics. However, it recalls that this interpretative vocation of the poet as a tarjuman is based on hermeneutical principles, in particular on a circulation between the multiples references which compose the text as a palimpsest. This intercultural circulation also involves delving into the layers of time and history in order to excavate ever-richer meaning. The article then questions the ways in which Abdelwahab Meddeb also fashioned himself into an “archaeologist of the contemporary”.","PeriodicalId":41074,"journal":{"name":"Expressions maghrebines","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/exp.2020.0016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48677336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He aligned his new poetic cycle with a revisionist editorial attitude toward translation and its role in generating literary historical discourse. The turn away from prose, fiction, and the novel infuses his new work with a sense of parousia, or a second coming of poetry, wherein “une poésie antérieure” erupts and emerges out of later poetry, out of second translations of older poetry, out of Meddeb’s own self-quotations from recent editorial prefaces. With Matière des oiseaux (2001), he gives formal cachet to his preoccupation with return, the parousia of poetry, and closure by bringing the long histories of Arabic, Persian, and French poetic idioms into head-on confrontation. His text delves deep into the transmissive modes of sacred poetic lore, tied together through the recitational concept of Qurʾānic khitm [seal], the intertwined ideas of millenarianism and sacrifice, and, above all, the poet’s future metamorphoses into bird and flying animals, real and dreamed. Meddeb draws on classical (Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār), modern (Charles Baudelaire), and contemporary (Serge Pey, Rachid O.) ornithological imagery, filling Matière des oiseaux with the Qurʾānic notion of tajalliyāt [revelations], and interleaving it with the historical poetic feathers of birds, flying insects, and dragons.Abstract:De 1987 à 2001, Abdelwahab Meddeb se réinvente en poète et éditeurtraducteur de poésie. Il fait correspondre ce nouveau cycle poétique avec une attitude éditoriale révisionniste ciblant la traduction et le rôle qu’elle joue dans la génération des discours de l’histoire littéraire. Son détour de la prose, de la fiction, et du roman insuffle à son nouveau travail un sentiment de parousie – une seconde venue de la poésie – où “une poésie antérieure” fait éruption au sein de poésies postérieures, de secondes traductions d’anciennes poésies, d’autocitations faites par Meddeb lui-même de ses propres préfaces éditoriales récentes. Dans Matière des oiseaux (2001), il formalise sa préoccupation avec le retour-détour, la clôture, et la parousie de la poésie avec une confrontation en tête-à-tête entre les longues histoires des idiomes poétiques arabe, persan, et français. Son texte s’engouffre dans les modes de transmission du legs poétique sacré, relié autour du concept du khitm [sceau] coranique, des idées entremêlées de millénarisme et de sacrifice, et, surtout, des futures métamorphoses du poète en oiseau et en animaux volants, aussi réels que rêvés. Meddeb se sert d’images ornithologiques classiques (Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār), modernes (Charles Baudelaire), et contemporaines (Serge Pey, Rachid O.) afin d’infuser Matière des oiseaux avec la notion coranique de tajalliyāt [révélations], tout en l’intercalant avec les poétiques plumes historiques d’oiseaux, d’insectes volants et de dragons.","PeriodicalId":41074,"journal":{"name":"Expressions maghrebines","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/exp.2020.0013","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49624743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
