As corpus of analysis, a text published in 2016 in a virtual news portal was selected. In the analysis of data, we support mainly in discussions carried out in the context of Textual (GERALDI, 1997; KOCH, 2010) and Grammatical theories (AZEREDO, 2010; NEVES, 2016). Martins","doi":"10.12957/matraga.2020.49640","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2020.49640","url":null,"abstract":"The Vegetable, or From President to Postman and Scandalabra: A Farce Fantasy in a Prologue and Three Acts still inhabit the Fitzgerald canon as works of dubious quality due to the total disaster of their first productions— an opinion that reflects many a researcher’s tendency to analyze the two plays as pertaining to the tradition of dramatic realism. This view also ignores the expectations of the public at the time, the prevalent theatrical trends, and—perhaps more importantly—Literary Modernism, which mixed dramatic conventions and prose to create hybrid pieces called closet dramas. This paper analyzes the two aforementioned plays through the Modernist closet drama perspective. A hipotese da pesquisa e que existe em vigencia no aparato critico um Rosa cor-de-rosa, tanto no sentido de atenuar sua “fala narcisica” (CHAUVIN, 2020), como no de obliterar a tradicional relacao dessa cor a feminilidade. O presente trabalho e uma interpretacao critica da pratica artistica de Mario de Andrade que interroga como a apropriacao da figura do Arlequim, que atravessa sua obra, e transformada numa proposta estetica e num amoldamento de artista. Olhando para o modo como a critica percebeu o Ar­lequim dentro da escrita de Mario de Andrade, dialogamos com esses aspectos e propomos uma ampliacao do significado dessa figura, pensando nos motivos da escolha dessa mascara por parte do escritor, e vendo-a como fundamento do ato improvisado de escrever e representar uma arte e uma identidade cuja totalidade seria impossivel ainda no Brasil. Sob esse ponto de vista, Macunaima seria um exemplo de arlequimizacao, cuja feicao rapsodica indica ja a proximidade com o improvisar de varias fontes simile a pratica arlequinal da Commedia dell’arte . As diferentes vozes das seis persona­gens principais sao atravessadas pelo tempo, da infância a velhice, e entre elas sao inseridos interludios que, reunidos, apresentam o decorrer de um dia, instâncias paralelas que se interpenetram na complementaridade entre ser humano e natureza de que faz parte. A enorme importância que a autora sempre deu para a forma de seus textos e inegavel, em especial ao explora-la ao maximo, a ponto de esgarcar as fronteiras entre os generos literarios e nao-literarios. We explore the character of Mrs. McNab, a housekeeper, in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927), using sentences from the novel interspersed with creative-criticism in brackets (just as the action of the plot is bracketed in the novel). {"title":"“It is lonely being a young man sent abroad to fight” she said.","authors":"Kirsty Gunn","doi":"10.12957/matraga.2020.53816","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2020.53816","url":null,"abstract":"[Short story] Introduction:  Readers of Kirsty Gunn’s fiction, whether the novels or short stories, are well accustomed to encountering overt and playful acknowledgement of the horizon or scene of writing in the story, to feeling like a co-creator or accomplice in the making of the story. The reader is let in on the story. And this new story, “It is lonely being a young man sent abroad to fight” she said, which begins with a dream reported to the narrator by her sister, very soon primes the reader: “Everything that happens must be followed by a conversation – it’s always event plus discussion, event plus discussion – even if the ‘everything’ is just some rag bag of images hauled up from her unconscious and set before her while she is asleep”. This story, rather like a dream, compresses so much into its swerving narrative. Fasten your seatbelts as “event plus discussion” becomes event as discussion; language is both event itself and event-making, and vice versa. Language produces events, this story makes clear, sometimes death-dealing events, perhaps the fate of that “young man sent abroad to fight” reported in the sentence that folds in and back on the story from its final line to its title. Gunn takes the epithet of “contemporary modernist” as a compliment, recognising that her own unique form of self-conscious, self-referential and dialogical making arises from a space cleared by great “modernist” writers, not least Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, along with Muriel Spark and later technicians of what we might term “the modernist sentence”1. Modernism for Gunn is a living mutating mode, not a historical literary era, nor is it a form of realism. In our foreword to this issue of MATRAGA, we ask what “modernist” experimental prose might look like in the 21st century.
