In the comprehension task, adults performed very well, unlike children, who had trouble with object relative clauses. This points to a specific difficulty with structures that involve intervention (Friedmann, Belletti and Rizzi 2009). In the present study, we investigated the role of animacy features of the antecedent in the production of object relative clauses, and specifically whether the production of object relatives would be higher with inanimate antecedents. Previous studies have mentioned the animacy features of the arguments as relevant (Correa 1994; Goodluck 2005; Kidd et al. 2007; Durrleman, Bentea and Guasti 2016). We explore the relevance of the findings for the discussion on the nature of the asymmetry between subject and object relative clauses. We analyze data from a spontaneous production corpus of a young European Portuguese speaking child that confirm that object relatives often have inanimate antecedents. We also conducted an elicited production task, inspired on Novogrodsky and Friedmann 2006, which elicited relative clauses manipulating the animacy of the antecedent. 42 European Portuguese children aged 4 to 6 participated in this task, as well as a control group of 20 adults. Results from the elicited production task show a higher production of object relatives with inanimate antecedents in both groups, although the difference was only significant for the adults. We conclude that the animacy of the antecedent is a feature that may play a role in the production of relatives. --- Original in English. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28710","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"266-287"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28710","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45113849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uma linha de explicacao para esta tendencia e que os troqueus resultam de um valor default ´esquerda´ para o parâmetro do nucleo do pe (e.g. DRESHER 1992, FIKKERT 1994). Entretanto, como muitos destes estudos discutem linguas que sao trocaicas na forma adulta (e.g. ingles, holandes), e dificil separar se os troqueus iniciais sao devidos ao valor default ou se refletem o padrao da lingua alvo. Alem disso, alguns estudos tem demonstrado que nem sempre as criancas apresentam uma tendencia trocaica (e.g. DEMUTH 1996). O portugues brasileiro se torna entao uma lingua muito interessante a se analisar, pois, de um lado, apresenta mais troqueus do que iambos (fraco-forte) na fala adulta; e por outro, as criancas comecam produzindo mais iambos do que troqueus (e.g. SANTOS 2001, 2007, BONILHA 2005, BAIA 2008). Alguem poderia argumentar que esta tendencia iâmbica inesperada nos dados iniciais de portugues e consistente com a frequencia de palavras multissilabicas na lingua ambiente (e.g. KEHOE 1999, ROARK & DEMUTH 2000, PRIETO 2006). Neste artigo, colocamos esta explicacao alternativa a prova, analisando dados de 2 criancas adquirindo portugues brasileiro, bem como de seus interlocutores. Se a analise defendendo a influencia da fala dirigida a crianca (FDC) estiver correta, deveriamos esperar encontrar mais iambos do que troqueus em FDC, dado que analises previas de dados de criancas adquirindo portugues brasileiro encontraram uma tendencia iâmbica. Os resultados, no entanto, mostram que FDC apresentam um padrao distribucional diferente da fala adulta, mas ainda assim ha mais troqueus que iambos. Alem disso, a producao infantil apresenta uma distribuicao de padroes prosodicos diferente do FDC. Logo, FDC nao pode explicar os padroes prosodicos iniciais do portugues brasileiro. Adicionalmente, os resultados mostram que as criancas nao estao evitando nenhum padrao acentual especifico na sua selecao lexical, nem evitando algum padrao na sua producao. Em suma, nossos resultados claramente descartam a hipotese de que os padroes prosodicos infantis refletem a distribuicao dos padroes prosodicos em FDC. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28708","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"310-340"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28708","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49585056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, the aim was to examine the acoustic characteristics of the interlanguage unstressed vowels and to determine whether the language learners’ stress assignment in cognate words was target-like or not. The participants were 20 L1 BP learners of English and two native English speakers who provided the baseline data. Participants read lists of sentences including polysyllabic cognate words with the neutral suffixes “-able” and “-al” (e.g. ‘respectable’, ‘radical’). Participants’ productions were acoustically and auditorily analysed and the F1, F2 and duration values measured. The results showed that the L1 BP participants produced a reduced vowel /ə/ with similar acoustic characteristics to the L1 English speakers, differentiating it from /ʌ/ in terms of vowel quality and duration. Despite being able to distinguish between the unstressed and the stressed central vowels, the correct assignment of stress in polysyllabic cognates was challenging for the L1 BP informants. A possible explanation for the non-target-like stress assignment is negative transfer from the L1, in which one of the target suffixes, “-al” (e.g. ‘tropical’), attracts stress, contrary to the L2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A ACENTUACAO TONICA E A PRODUCAO DA VOGAL ATONA EM SUFIXOS NEUTROS DO INGLES POR APRENDIZES BRASILEIROS O presente estudo investigou a producao de vogais atonas por aprendizes brasileiros de ingles. O objetivo principal foi examinar as caracteristicas dessas vogais entre as duas linguas em contato e determinar se os aprendizes atribuiam acento tonico adequadamente. Os participantes foram 20 alunos brasileiros de ingles e dois falantes nativos que forneceram dados de base. Os participantes leram listas de frases incluindo palavras polissilabicas cognatas com os sufixos neutros “-able” e “-al” (por exemplo, “respectable”, “radical”). As producoes dos participantes foram analisadas acustica e auditivamente e os valores de F1, F2 e duracao das vogais atonas foram medidos. Os resultados mostraram que os participantes brasileiros produziram a vogal /ə/ com caracteristicas acusticas similares aos falantes nativos de ingles, diferenciando-a de /ʌ/ em termos de qualidade e duracao da vogal. Apesar de serem capazes de distinguir as vogais centrais atona e tonica, a atribuicao correta do acento tonico em cognatos polissilabicos foi desafiadora para os informantes brasileiros. Uma possivel explicacao para a atribuicao inconsistente do acento tonico e a influencia do portugues brasileiro, em que um dos sufixos alvo, “-al” (por exemplo, “tropical”), atrai a tonicidade, ao contrario do que tipicamente ocorre no ingles. --- Artigo em ingles. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28601","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"438-462"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28601","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43235036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voicing assimilation, which consists of extending the [voice] feature from one segment to another, occurs both in BP and in English, but in a different way. While in BP the assimilation is regressive, since it is triggered by the voicing of the following context (e.g.: me[z]mo), in English it is progressive, as it occurs due to the preceding context (e.g.: dog[z], cat[s]). The sample is composed of 30 Brazilian speakers of English as a second language divided into three proficiency levels (basic, intermediate and advanced), plus 7 native English speakers (control group). The data were collected through an experiment containing 60 words with the fricative /z/ in final position, which were read by the subjects and acoustically verified. The results showed that the application of voicing was favored by voiced segments in the following context, an evidence that it is the voicing of the following context, rather than the preceding one, that influenced the production of voiced fricatives in the contexts under analysis. This is confirmed if we consider that voicing was applied in only 1% of cases of fricative followed by voiceless consonants or pauses (12/1121), contexts in which regressive assimilation could not occur. Therefore, the results showed a transference of the L1 rule to the L2, since the subjects applied the regressive voicing assimilation in the three proficiency levels. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28568","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"417-437"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41567617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to do so, thirty-four productions related to the word /eSˈtɾela/ were analyzed and five variants of execution were verified, namely: [ˡteɐ], [ˡtejɐ] [ˡtejlɐ], [ˡteʎɐ] and [ˡtelɐ]. Each of these variants was analyzed qualitatively based on the trajectory of the formants and the intensity of the sounds showed by the spectrograms; and quantitatively, through the analysis of the values of formants’ frequencies and especially by the difference between F2 and F1, necessary to verify the degree of posteriorization of the lateral produced. From the analyzes, gradients were observed in the subject's speech in an attempt to reach the target — the lateral alveolar. These gradients could only be verified on the basis of the acoustic analyzes detailed here. Values resulting from the difference between F2-F1 revealed that the distance between the two subjects decreased as productions approached their target because it was verified that when the difference between these two formants decreases the productions approach the lateral alveolar. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28509","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"365-392"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28509","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47789598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

BP exhibits variable number agreement on nominal and verbal phrases. Previous studies in several languages point out that, although children produce number inflection by the age of three, they have difficulty on comprehension tasks until the age of six (JOHNSON; DE VILLIERS; SEYMOR, 2005; PEREZ-LEROUX, 2005; LEGENDRE et al., 2010; BLAHOVA; SMOLIK, 2014). On our study, an experimental task, developed with the Picture Identification Task technique, aimed at verifying if, despite the variable nature of the number agreement in BP, six and five-year-old children identify the verbal form of the 3rd person plural in sentences of null subject ( Comeram doce ) and associate this form to an action practiced by more than one entity and if the singular verbal form is associated with the concept of singularity ( Comeu doce ). Sentences with number information on the subject and the verb were also tested ( As criancas comeram doce vs. A crianca comeu doce ). Our results suggest that plural pictures were systematically chosen for plural linguistic stimuli, although there was a preference for plural pictures also with singular sentences. The variable input seems not to interfere on the perception and comprehension of the plural verbal morpheme on the age tested in our study. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28498","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"288-309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28498","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45668012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We elicited production of DPs containing two PP modifiers, in two conditions designed to tease apart the acquisition of an embedding rule from the acquisition of the recursivity of an embedding rule. In the recursive condition, one modifier PP was itself modified by an additional PP. In the non-recursive condition, both PPs sequentially modified the main noun. Participants were 71 English monolingual children and 35 bilinguals between the ages of four and six. The evidence suggested an overall difference between groups, however further analysis revealed that bilinguals differed from monolinguals only insofar as the onset of PP embedding. No specific additional bilingual delay arose from the recursive condition. This suggests that recursive embedding is a resilient domain in language acquisition and supports proposals that link morphosyntactic delays in bilingual children to domains of grammar that are heavily reliant on lexical learning, which would include learning the first instance of PP embedding. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOIS PASSOS ABAIXO: ESTAO OS BILINGUES ATRASADOS NA AQUISICAO DE PPs ENCAIXADOS RECURSIVAMENTE? Este artigo investiga se as criancas bilingues estariam atrasadas em relacao a producao de DPs complexos. Eliciamos a producao de DPs contendo dois PPs modificadores, em duas condicoes, planejadas para distinguir a aquisicao da regra de encaixamento da aquisicao da recursividade de uma regra de encaixamento. Na condicao recursiva, um PP modificador era, por sua vez, modificado por um PP adicional. Na condicao nao-recursiva, ambos PPs modificavam sequencialmente o nome. Participaram 71 criancas monolingues de ingles e 35 bilingues entre as idades de quatro e seis anos. Os resultados sugerem uma diferenca entre os grupos. No entanto, analises mais detalhadas revelam que os bilingues diferem dos monolingues apenas no que diz respeito ao inicio de producao de PPs encaixados. Nao se constatam atrasos adicionais relativos a condicao recursiva. Isso sugere que o encaixamento recursivo e um dominio resiliente na aquisicao de linguagem e oferece suporte a propostas que vinculam atrasos morfossintaticos em criancas bilingues a dominios da gramatica que dependem fortemente da aprendizagem lexical, o que incluiria a aprendizagem da primeira instância de um PP encaixado. --- Artigo em ingles. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28781","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"393-416"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28781","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43708306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Retomando os resultados de Teixeira (1988), Lamprecht (1993), Avila (2000), Ribas (2002), Staudt (2008) e Baesso (2009), o artigo examina possiveis motivacoes a observacao (ou nao) de estagios intermediarios no desenvolvimento infantil. Investiga-se se as motivacoes podem residir i) numa tendencia geral do percurso de aquisicao fonologica – tal como observado na aquisicao de outras estruturas silabicas, como a coda CVC; ii) no desenvolvimento individual de cada crianca; ou iii) em efeitos metodologicos relativos ao tipo de coleta de dados. Para verificar tais motivacoes, analisam-se dados naturalisticos de 3 sujeitos, acompanhados quinzenalmente, e dados experimentais de 49 sujeitos, obtidos num teste de repeticao de palavras e pseudopalavras. Os resultados apontam que o tipo de coleta de dados pode afetar a observacao de estagios do desenvolvimento silabico em contexto naturalistico, uma vez que o desbalanceamento da quantidade de alvos CCV e de sua combinacao fonotatica pode afetar a determinacao de estrategias como a selecao lexical e os alvos/direcao das substituicoes em CCV. O desenvolvimento individual mostrou-se correlacionado as tendencias fonologicas gerais assinaladas por Teixeira (1988) e Lamprecht (1993), a medida que tais generalizacoes podem atuar na limitacao dos diferentes percursos possiveis a crianca na aquisicao CCV. O estudo sugere, ainda, que o tipo de estrategia empregado em reparo ao CCV tambem depende do desenvolvimento silabico infantil. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12957/matraga.2017.28574","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"24 1","pages":"341-364"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12957/MATRAGA.2017.28574","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47759982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
