Through Wild Siberia (1898‑1905), written in 1923 and translated from English into French in 1925, results from a complex editorial history and still awaits a translation from the Polish original. The aim here is to shed some light on the reasons for its success at its first reception and its rediscovery since 1989 and the rise of censorship in Poland: Why (re)read Man and Mystery in Asia? This book, which goes beyond the scientific writings of the Polish geologist, can be read at least at three additional levels: as the literary narrative of a scientist, it articulates science with economics and ecology; as a text inspired by Anglo‑Saxon or Polish adventure novels, it stands out as an anticolonial western in the Far East; as the text of an author who had escaped a manhunt by Russian and Mongolian revolutionaries in 1920‑1921, a story narrated in Beasts, Men and Gods, he depicts a whole shadow world, where the narrator experiences proximity with death and the dead.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Le récit de voyage d’Antoni Ferdynand Ossendowski, Asie fantôme. À travers la Sibérie sauvage (1898‑1905), écrit en 1923 et traduit en français en 1925, via l’anglais, résulte d’une histoire éditoriale complexe et attend encore une traduction d’après l’original polonais. Il s’agit d’éclairer ici les raisons de son succès lors de sa première réception et celles de sa redécouverte depuis 1989 et la levée de la censure en Pologne : pourquoi (re)lire Asie fantôme ? {"title":"A Pole in the Far East: Trials and Tribulations of a Text between New York, Paris, and Warsaw (Ferdynand Ossendowski, Beasts, Men, and Gods)","authors":"Elżbieta Koziołkiewicz","doi":"10.46298/SLOVO.2021.7441","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46298/SLOVO.2021.7441","url":null,"abstract":"International audience\u0000 \u0000 After the outbreak of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ferdynand Ossendowski, a Polish scientist, adventurer and writer living in the Russian Empire, managed to flee the country and tell his story to the world. This account of a dangerous journey through Central Asia, titled Beasts, Men, and Gods, was published in New York thanks to the help of an American, Lewis Stanton Palen. The universally admired book was translated from English into many languages, and Ossendowski himself soon prepared a Polish version of the narrative. Although Palen was credited only as a collaborator, hisimplication in the project seems to be larger than has been so far assumed. This paper discusses hitherto unexamined letters from Palen to Ossendowski as well as details of their later cooperation to form a theory on the genesis of Ossendowski’s most famous book. It also traces the uncommon literary career of Palen who since the publication of Beasts, Men, and Gods embarked on the collaboration with several other Central and Eastern European “source-authors” whose autobiographical accounts he edited and/ or translated. While none of them seems to have later retold the events in their own language, Ossendowski did, and the most important differences between the two texts are analyzed in the context of the necessity to adjust one’s personal experiences to the foreign literary market and the implied readers’ vision of the traversed lands.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Après que la révolution bolchevique a éclaté, Ferdynand Ossendowski, un scientifique, aventurier et écrivain polonais, qui vivait dans l’Empire russe, a réussi à fuir le pays et raconter son histoire au monde. Ce récit d’un voyage dangereux à travers l’Asie centrale, intitulé Bêtes, hommes et dieux (conformément à l’original Beasts, Men, and Gods), a été publié à New York grâce à l’aide d’un Américain, Lewis Stanton Palen. Le livre, universellement admiré, a été traduit de l’anglais en plusieurs langues et Ossendowski lui‑même a préparé peu après une version polonaise de la narration. This Russianness is the starting point of the present article which aims to place Hugo‑Bader’s literary personality in the Polish galaxy of travel writers. His interest for post‑Soviet space connects Hugo‑Bader with two writers who have distinguished themselves in this field: Svetlana Aleksievič and Ryszard Kapuściński. Considering the method, the collection of material, the relationship to witnesses, the vision of Russian power, the storytelling and the use of literature, the comparison will help to identify some of Hugo‑Bader’s most important specificities.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Sur les quatre livres que compte l’oeuvre de Jacek Hugo‑Bader, trois se déroulent en Russie et dans les territoires de l’ex‑URSS : Dans la vallée paradisiaque, parmi les mauvaises herbes [W rajskiej dolinie, wśród zielska, 2002], La Fièvre blanche [Biała gorączka, 2009] et Le Journal de la Kolyma [Dzienniki kołymskie, 2010]. Cette prédominance russophone constitue le point de départ du présent article dont l’objet est de situer la personnalité littéraire d’Hugo‑Bader, dans la pléiade polonaise des écrivains voyageurs. L’intérêt pour l’espace post‑soviétique invite en effet à rapprocher Hugo‑Bader de deux écrivains qui se sont illustrés dans le domaine : Svetlana Aleksievitch et Ryszard Kapuściński. His first book, The journals of a White Sea wolf reveals his originality. He tries to delve into the mysteries of the ‘Russian soul’ and history, for that he chooses to blend in with local life. That is why he settled in a faraway, but representative place, the Solovetsky Islands. He writes of the ordinary folk he meets on a daily basis. He discovers a world marked by the ruins of the Soviet prison system, but also by the secular presence of the monastery. In his notes, Wilk stops on some details with strong metaphorical potential. Finally, he writes of himself as a writer and a traveler. For in his writing and his travels, Wilk’s main aim is to find himself, to understand who he is, to think about writing that allows self‑transcendence, about the language and about the specificity of each word, with its emotional and symbolic charge. The journals of a White Sea wolf is a testimony on past and today’s Russia, a reflection on practice and literary genre of travel prose.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Mariusz Wilk est un auteur polonais qui voyage dans la Russie du grand Nord. Son premier ouvrage, Le Journal d’un loup, révèle l’originalité de ce regard. Wilk cherche à découvrir la Russie en profondeur, en choisissant de se fondre dans la vie locale. Pour cela il s’installe dans les îles Solovki, un lieu excentré, mais représentatif à ses yeux, de l’histoire et de la mentalité russes. Il y découvre un monde en sursis, marqué par les ruines du système pénitentiaire soviétique, mais aussi par la présence séculaire du monastère. Dans ses notes, Wilk s’arrête sur certains détails à forte potentialité métaphorique. Enfin, il se livre à une réflexion sur son double statut d’écrivain et d’étranger, sur l’écriture qui permet le dépassement de soi, sur la langue et le mot, avec sa charge émotive et symbolique. La trivialite des preoccupations du futur grand anthropologue n’a pas manque de choquer et a valu a l’auteur d’etre qualifie de « narcisse hypocondriaque » par Clifford Geertz. Cet article se propose de reprendre le debat sur le Journal d’ethnographe a la lumiere du roman de jeunesse de Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, Les 622 chutes de Bungo (ecrit en 1910/1911). S.I. Witkiewicz, peintre, dramaturge et romancier, etait alors lie avec Malinowski par une grande amitie et l’a accompagne au debut de son expedition en 1914. He left two narratives of his trip to the United States in the fall of 1982: the first one is a travel log entitled AAmeryka [Aamerica] published in 1988, five years after Białoszewski’s death: the second one is a part of his Tajny Dziennik [Secret diary], published in 2012. One could say about America, that it is an “anti‑diary.” We can better appreciate the uniqueness of this book, if we compare his depiction of the New World, with what we can find in America [Amérique], antoher “anti‑diary,” written by Jean Baudrillard and published in 1986. Białoszewski contemplates America, maybe with some preconceived ideas, but he is shaped by his own historical experience and worldview. In his American trip, Baudrillard finds, above all, a confirmation of his catastrophist predictions.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Miron Białoszewski (1922‑1983), poète, prosateur et dramaturge, a laissé deux témoignages de son séjour aux États‑Unis, effectué à l’automne 1982 : le premier est un récit de voyage intitulé AAmérique [AAmeryka], qui paraît en 1988, soit cinq années après la mort de l’auteur ; le deuxième est constitué par une partie de son Journal secret [Tajny dziennik], qui n’a été publié qu’en 2012. D’AAmérique, on peut dire qu’il s’agit d’un « anti‑journal ». Pour mieux appréhender la particularité de celui‑ci, il est intéressant de confronter l’image du Nouveau Monde qui s’en dégage de celle qu’on trouve dans un autre « anti‑journal », Amérique, de Jean Baudrillard, publié en 1986. Białoszewski contemple l’Amérique d’un regard, peut‑être non dénué de tout a priori, mais façonné par une expérience historique et une vision du monde qui lui sont propres.
