The picture of estate life In Leo Tolstoy’s novel “Resurrection” is realized in two contrasting versions: luxurious existence of the upper class and the aristocracy, not supported by any content, and transforming into a new image of the working life of the intelligentsia and landowners on the land. The author demonstrates the facts of impoverishment of estate life at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, which are introduced in the artistic world of the novel. It is proved that the idea in the work of inseparable connection of a person with the people around him and with humanity at large, which is the key conception of the novel, is directly related to Tolstoy’s understanding of the change of the forms of estate life, important and dear for the writer himself. Of great importance in the novel is the awareness of the characters of natural life, which is presented in contrast to civilization, which deviates from the basic laws of love and goodness. On the basis of an analytical comparison of the drafts of the novel and the final text, the author substantiates the importance of the estate theme for understanding the feelings of the protagonist and his inner life, for organizing the epic artistic world of the novel. The article illustrates the stages of the dialectical movement of Dmitry Nekhlyudov and the connection between the estate and family themes. The author rethinks some episodes of the novel that have received controversial interpretations in science and reveals the artistic links that connect different chapters of the work.","PeriodicalId":40343,"journal":{"name":"Philological Class","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84269618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kotelevskaya","doi":"10.51762/1fk-2021-26-03-22","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.51762/1fk-2021-26-03-22","url":null,"abstract":"study is intermedial utopias. Using representative poetic and prose German texts of the twentieth century as examples, the author describes the ambivalent cultural situation of modernity, characterized by a tendency of literature towards the abstract thinking of music and hypertrophied sound recording, while music develops from “Wagnerian music as language” (T. Adorno) to the “absolute music” or performative acoustic phenomena of New Music. The aim of the study is to identify typical forms of intermedial verbal-musical utopia in late German modernist literature. The study uses the comparative, narratological and musicological methods, the qualitative analysis of verse forms and the thematic analysis of prose. In the course of her research, the author makes a conclusion that there are three ways of “literary music making”, such as: telling about music (T. Mann, H. Hesse, M. Beyer, P. Süskind), imitating the musical language (as performed by avant-gardists) or as a combination of these two models (H. Wollschläger, T. Bernhard, E. Jelinek etc.). In German modernism and postmodernism, this intermedial transfer is complicated by ethical and political collision, which has its origins in utopian romantic thinking, and which became increasingly acute during the Third Reich era (cf. Thomas Mann’s and Hans Wollschläger’s reconstruction of the devil’s pact fable). Music becomes a form of escape into the metaphysics, while a musical composition is chosen as an alternative to traditional lyrical or narrative forms. Thus, this collision is considered in the context of the modernist crisis and criticism of language. The results of this study can be used in the formation of an alternative history of literature based not only on the evolution of verbal forms, but also on hybrid genres, namely, verbal-musical forms. Based on the research co-authored with his colleagues, the author describes three approaches to linguistic research in CL. First, corpus-informed analysis assumes that the data collected in the corpus are used as a source of examples in a natural language. Second, corpus-based analysis presupposes that the data are examined not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. Third, corpus-driven analysis assumes that the research task is to create an algorithm for data processing, the results of which require theoretical interpretation or practical application. The article concludes with a discussion of those implications that CL brings into the general understanding of language. The most important of them are: reduction of the role of introspection, increase of attention to peripheral linguistic phenomena, and reliance on quantitative data. It is still too early to sum up the impact of corpus linguistics on the general theory of language, but it is already clear that syntagmatic connections, in particular idiomatization in a broad sense, have moved into the focus of linguistic attention and are recognized as one of the main phenomena of language and its evolution. Moreover, an adequate description of a language is not limited to the rules of interaction of units divided into levels, but the description of all – both individual and the most general – probabilistic parameters of use, representing a single continuum in which the division into language and speech is conventional.","PeriodicalId":40343,"journal":{"name":"Philological Class","volume":"70 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79614455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea to employ the approach belongs to M. Zhuravlev. Seven canonic texts chosen by I. Golovacheva and M. Zhuravlev (E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “Die Doppeltgänger”, E. A. Poe’s “William Wilson”, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella “The Double”, Henry James’s “The Jolly Corner”, Joseph Conrad’s “The Secret Sharer” and Vladimir Nabokov’s Despair) are analyzed. Our point of departure was the archetypal attributes of the double highlighted in a seminal work by Otto Rank of 1914. Still, Rankean list of attributes had to be supplemented by a list of other, specifically ‘poetic’, attributes, by a set of diverse invariant motifs found in the above works of fiction, specified by I. Golovacheva and P. de Mauny. Incidence matrixes built for each of the four specific groups of attributes of the double allowed us to view the doppelganger poetics as a whole and each of the chosen seven texts in particular. The quantitative method led to several new qualitative conclusions. For example, it demonstrated that Dostoevsky’s “The Double” and Nabokov’s Despair occupy opposite places in the set of doppelganger texts: Dostoevsky’s novella and Nabokov’s short novel differ much in their comprehensiveness and typicality of doppelganger imagery. Such a result allowed Golovacheva, Zhuravlev and de Mauny to reconsider the notion of the ‘typical’ in literary theory. The incidence matrix method also revealed the similarity of “William Wilson” and Despair. The objectivist comparative analysis and the subsequent close rereading of these two fictions prove, Golovacheva argues, that Poe’s tale is one of the pre-texts of Despair, such intertextuality previously neglected in Nabokov studies.","PeriodicalId":40343,"journal":{"name":"Philological Class","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81381963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper discusses the issue of introduction of new educational technologies as a tool for developing students’ communicative competence in foreign language learning. The study is aimed at analyzing the impact of digital story creation in a foreign language on the development of students’ foreign language communicative competence, their motivation to learn a foreign language and their adaptation to academic environment. Review of literature on readiness of modern higher education to wide implementation of e-learning components is given; reasons preventing their introduction into teaching of foreign languages are described. Analysis of implementing digital storytelling in a foreign language teaching is presented. The impact of the first- year students’ participation in creation of digital stories on their lan guage learning motivation and adaptation to university environment is considered. The data, collected from surveys and digital stories, created by students and assessed by university teaching staff, were analyzed. The results prove a positive impact of dig ital storytelling educational technology on students’ motivation in foreign language learning, as well as on the process of first- year students’ adaptation to academic environment. The results also demonstrate that creation of digital stories contributes to formation and development of variety of learners competences, including foreign language communicative competence and helps improve students’ soft skills. The material for this study includes several thousand photos taken between 2010 and 2018 in different regions of Russia, representing advertising material and signboards where different languages and cultures meet. Methodologically, the photos were classified and analyzed according to the types of code-switching and hybrid structures appearing in and on them. Some history is given on the cities studied, as well as the state of the languages that are part of their linguistic repertory. A few particular situations are scrutinized, involving national republics and other areas where linguistic minorities exist (major cities, provinces, villages). A strong tendency for the use of foreign culture was evident in the findings all over the country; the English language was preferred, but not perfect; an Asian influence was emerging everywhere. Wordplay characterized the creative employment of letters and words. Yet the cultures of the former Soviet Union, as well as the cultures of linguistic minorities (other languages besides Russian) were underrepresented, even in the national republics. The conclusion is that the modern language of the street is oriented towards the fusion of diverse cultures, but not necessarily those that represent the ethnic and cultural richness of Russia. Multiculturalism as reflected in public signage is more lively than multicultural policy because of emotionality and linkages with styles and scripts.","PeriodicalId":40343,"journal":{"name":"Philological Class","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81566098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
