A small group of students were involved to apply their knowledge of computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering to something unusual and with a social impact: driving a wheelchair by using brain-computer interfaces. Today's development of these interfaces are not yet so advanced to be effectively used in health devices and must be considered very carefully. This led to a pilot experiment that kept all the charm of the original goal, but would have no drawbacks if something should go wrong: moving a small cart, based on Arduino boards, interfaced with a normal laptop to a commercial and affordable brainwave sensing headset. Being the driver not onboard, a Bluetooth connection has been used to send commands to the cart. Results are twofold. The cart actually moved where requested, and this is even more noticeable after considering that the people involved had limited time training and had no reduced mobility, which means less psychological involvement, otherwise recognized as an important factor of success. The group manifested a strong interest in every part of the project, giving them awareness of their actual skills and their actual ability to autonomously acquire new skills as needed. This study is the outcome of the International Telematic University Uninettuno and Helwan University (Cairo, Egypt) in a four year long cooperation for a double degree (one recognized in Italy and all Europe and the other in Egypt). The students involved had completed all the exams and were going to graduate. This project was devised for one of their MS thesis.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123217616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the case although the use of mobile devices offers completely new opportunities for teaching and learning contexts. The course “Fit for Science” wants to change this. Hence, it is developed to give the students the opportunity to use tablet PCs in context of their studies and simultaneously to improve their abilities in the field of scientific working processes. Therefore this course concept heavily relies on the use of Evernote, which is an online tool for developing shared notebooks and with this documenting and organizing the working process. In addition to that Evernote perfectly works as an application on mobile devices, too. The course itself is divided in four present meetings and three working phases in which students apply in teams the learned methods on an own research project. During the working phases students create presentations, a poster, and a scientific report. Based on the internal course evaluation and the students' feedback we found that the combination of tablet PCs with the Evernote software is a good opportunity to show how mobile devices can meaningfully be integrated into higher engineering education.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129557567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially true for topics related to information technology (IT) since technological progress is fast in this domain. However, instructors are not prepared really well for this task since they typically have a professional and educational background in areas different from pedagogy. Therefore, some sort of methodological framework to support the systematic development and refinement of courses would be highly appreciated. This paper presents such a method, called Competence- Oriented Didactics. This approach builds upon several concepts from general didactics, most notably Klafki's Didactic Analysis, and combines and extends these concepts. As a proof of concept, the method is applied to the refinement of an introductory course on information systems. This case study shows, among other things, that Competence-Oriented Didactics has the potential to be applicable for course (re-)design in other domains beyond IT as well.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134035630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The task becomes particularly difficult if the number of students enrolled in the programming course being taught increases to more than 100 - in such situations the evaluation cannot be done manually in a reasonable amount of time. Furthermore, the feedback for the students becomes impossible. The need for fast assessment of programming codes has led to the development of automated grading systems. As opposed to most systems that check each program's output for some predefined test cases in order to assess its correctness, in our previous work we have introduced a new model for semiautomatic student source code assessment [1]. Here, based on the ideas of that model, we propose a new model for collaborative learning of programming in case when there are a large number of students involved in the system i.e. enrolled in the programming course or engaged in preparations for programming contests.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132174237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we propose to use SPOCs and video contents to flip the classroom. The objective is to improve the involvement and satisfaction of students with the course, to reduce the drop-out rates and to improve the face-to-face course success rate. We apply these ideas to an undergraduate first year course on Data Structures and Algorithms. The study is validated by collecting data from two consecutive editions of the course, one in which the flipped classroom model and videos were used and other in which they were not. The gathered data included online data about the students' interaction with the SPOC materials and offline data collected during lectures and exams. In the edition where the SPOC materials were available, we have observed a correlation between the students' final marks and their percentage rate of video accesses with respect to the total number of accesses, which indicates a better academic performance for students who prefer videos over documents.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114319774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The former are mandatory and students must pass them all so they can achieve Bachelor degree. The number of the latter is usually several times greater than the number that a student should select. This challenges the student which elective courses to select. Some elective courses have prerequisites, so the student has to pass other (elective) course(s), while for many others the student can be enrolled in without any prerequisites. The main dilemma for the student is whether to enroll in either more tightly coupled elective courses, or more loosely coupled elective courses. Choosing the former, the student will be directed in more specific areas of computer science. However, there are students that would like to learn broad areas of computer science. This paper focuses on the emerged group of students that select interdisciplinary courses. The experience presented in this paper shows that these students enroll into three completely divergent courses: Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, Software Architecture and Design and Human-Computer Interaction. The paper presents the examples of interdisciplinary projects completed by these students. These complex projects are proposed in the Human Computer Interaction course for the students that have already successfully taken the Microprocessors and Microcontrollers and/or Software Architecture and Design courses. Some students have accepted the challenges to work on the interdisciplinary projects, which resulted in defining and finishing various diploma theses that integrate knowledge areas of two or even all of the three courses.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"196 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116311078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has also become one of the first preferences of students when it comes to complementing their education. However, in a globally connected world, mobility is a great value, being required by most of the professionals. In this way, the concept of virtual internships is being developed as an innovative approach to improve European Engineering Education (EEE). Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) has been playing an active role since 2009 in the establishment and improvement of virtual internships in Europe. This has been happening mainly by two ways: i) the organization of Events on Education (EoEs), each gathering the opinions of approximately 20 European students of technology on educational matters; ii) the participation in both Enterprise-University Virtual Placements (EU-VIP) and Promoting Virtual Mobility in Placements (PROVIP) thematic networks, under the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission. Thus, we present the outcomes of several EoEs in EEE conferences, disclosing the students' point of view regarding two main ideas: the concept and implications of virtual internships in Europe, and a set of guidelines for the communication between stakeholders during virtual internships.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132248779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This step was implemented with two online surveys, one targeting teachers and the other students. Altogether 915 respondents from 23 European countries were involved. Results indicate that the prevalence of online labs adoption was generally low and that the users had positive experiences despite some challenges such as difficult access (domain-specific labs) and language barrier (English user interface). Among others, a significant implication is to create a repository (portal) where resources can be used and shared with ease and enjoyability.","PeriodicalId":403342,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134004658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
