Teachers and students are the main participants in school education. According to recent studies, the teacher's instructional pointing gesture to the learning content can gain students' attention as well as improve students' learning performance. We aim to automatically recognize these pointing gestures by a series of compound methods. Our main contributions are threefold: first, we collected and labeled our own dataset for instructional pointing gesture recognition in the intelligent learning environment; second, we applied non-linear neural networks to learn the pointing gesture based on the joint points extracted by OpenPose[1]; Third, we proposed a novel framework to recognize the teacher's pointing gesture on a target area, which we named as the instructional pointing gesture, whose contents are frequently changing in real time. From the experimental results, we have proven that our proposed method allows us to recognize the pointing gesture with 90% accuracy on average.","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132431166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a lack of understanding of how neuroticism interact with perceived values resulting in online learning adoption. This study explores the moderating role of neuroticism in the relationships between perceived value (functional value, emotional value and social value) and adoption intention of online learning. The results show that neuroticism strengthens the positive effect of perceived emotional value on adoption intention of online learning. The adoption intention of online learning is higher for low neuroticism when perceived emotional value increases. Neuroticism does not moderate the effects of functional value and social value on adoption intention of online learning. This study fills the gap in online learning adoption literature by generalizing the effects of perceived values on online learning adoption to a specific personality trait. It also provides guidance for universities to shape their online learning strategy for neurotic students who are difficult to cope with new learning phenomenon. The paper discusses the study limitations and directions for future research.","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121620213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, since 2014, FPT Education has firstly launched Educamp, an annual educational conference. Educamp is to connect educators and industry experts, in and out of Vietnam, to share ideas, knowledge, and experiences to enhance Vietnamese education. In the range of this paper, the author will describe and evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of Educamp at FPT Education and which specific outcomes this conference has directly brought to the faculty and staff of FPT Education. Firstly, the author will give an overview introduction of the concepts of 'learning organization', as well as of 'Educamp'. Educamp's main purposes and its continuous development throughout five years at FPT Education will also be provided in this paper. Previous conferences' themes and topics will be compared to the trends in education of the respective years. Secondly, how Educamp has had the positive impact(s) on FPT Education will be analyzed. An online survey, which consists of open answer questions, will be conducted on a group of Educamp's past participants. The actual comments and feedback from them will serve as the base for said analysis. The survey results indicate that Educamp's participants, both educators and industry experts, are 'transformed' after participating in the conference, hence showing a positive impact of Educamp on FPT Education. Last but not least, the author will suggest some other models to enhance building the learning organization model at FPT Education.","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121633997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As in online learning, there is a lack of students' perceived presence in the delivery course. In this study, six teachers and their students in the delivery course were surveyed, interviewed and observed to explore the relevant factors that influence the students' perceived presence. The results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the students' perceived presence and the teacher's experience, and a significant negative correlation with the grade. When the class size was between 10 and 20, the students' perceived presence was the highest. The students' perceived presence had no significant correlation with the students' gender and discipline. Based on the data of interviews and observations, this study also summarized three strategies to develop students' perceived presence.","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124689206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So far, however, how student interpreters' performance in summarization exercises relates to their interpreting performance remains unclear, let alone how the relationship may differ at different interpreting training stages. The current study thus invited 62 beginner student interpreters (Group 1) and 19 intermediate student interpreters (Group 2), examining and comparing how they performed in a task of consecutive interpreting from L2 (in this case English) to L1 (in this case Chinese) and how they performed in a post-interpreting summarization task. With quantitative analyses three major findings were obtained: (1) Group 2 had significantly better performance in interpreting than Group 1, while the two groups were not significantly different in their performance in summarization; (2) Either group's summarization performance was significantly and positively correlated with their overall score in interpreting and with the target language grammaticality and appropriateness (one of the two interpreting sub-scores) as well; however, a significant correlation between summarization performance and information accuracy and completeness (the other interpreting sub-score) was only found in Group 1 but not in Group 2; (3) Group 1's summarization performance significantly explained more than 20% variance in either the overall interpreting performance or the sub-score information accuracy and completeness, and either group's summarization performance significantly explained no less than 20% variance in the target language grammaticality and appropriateness. Pedagogical implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"92 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128019420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In FPT University, we have designed an online system Lab where students experience real-world business programming problems, and work on project-based business models. These labs are guided by experts from the IT enterprises and are evaluated based on standards of the software industry. The system consists of four levels from low to high, in which students are required to use C or Java programming language, two of the most popular ones, to solve given problems. Students freely choose problems to solve in order to enrich at least the minimum LOC (Line Of Code) number required for each level. System does not allow use \"copy and paste\" keys, and students are required typing code to solve problems. The assessment is implemented partially automatic and by experts. Through these courses, students not only improve their programming skills, practical work experience, and career orientation but also have the opportunities to participate in professional networks, having more chances to be employable when they graduate. We are currently implementing the system at all four FPT University campuses in Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can Tho) as well as at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).","PeriodicalId":402709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2019 4th International Conference on Distance Education and Learning","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126769117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
