It is noted that access to communication resources between the two hemispheres is limited. Those resources that do exist are not always readily accessible or easy to use. It is suggested that beyond the technical barriers of communication is a very real fundamental interaction problem, as attempts are made to translate very different languages and cultures into mutually comprehensible and appreciable partnerships. Attention is given to technological advancements and cooperation that are providing solutions to communication dissemination.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":374472,"journal":{"name":"IPCC '88 Conference Record 'On the Edge: A Pacific Rim Conference on Professional Technical Communication'.","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123362899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They suggest that to create these new tools, it is necessary to understand how people communicate in an organization. The user interface for workgroup productivity tools must take into account both task and social aspects of the organization. The human factors discussed include: user motivation, user perception of and attraction to the product, and user skill and knowledge.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":374472,"journal":{"name":"IPCC '88 Conference Record 'On the Edge: A Pacific Rim Conference on Professional Technical Communication'.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126505093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Editing material written by non-native speakers of English or material written for them has special difficulties. The 'plain English' that is most understandable to the native reader may be confusing or even offensive to the person who has learned English as a second language. The author discusses some of the difficulties, with examples emphasizing communication between American and Japanese speakers, writers, and readers of English. It is concluded that the Japanese do characteristically have difficulty with certain aspects of English, notably the use of articles, verb form distinctions, and punctuation. These are problems in both writing and reading, despite the fact that reading is generally easier than writing. It was found that the way the two cultures organize their thoughts was not a cause for misunderstanding, because the differences are relatively minor.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":374472,"journal":{"name":"IPCC '88 Conference Record 'On the Edge: A Pacific Rim Conference on Professional Technical Communication'.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114139139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
